AIter a break Irom Nuntia, we gather now the most relevant news oI the Being and Doing oI the Congregation in the
world. This issue gives news Irom the months oI July, August, and September.!
Not long ago we celebrated the Ieast oI our Holy Founder, asking through him that the Spirit oI God help us to 'put on
the spirit of Christ` (CR, I, 3), 'for growing in the holiness which our vocation calls for` (CR, XII, 13). In this way,
we can continue being Good News Ior the poor.!
International Meetings!
Visitors` Meeting, New York, 2013!
'It is my hope that our time together in these days will be a
transIiguration` oI sorts, that our meeting will be a trans-
Iorming event, deepening our love oI Jesus and Saint Vin-
cent . to recognize our responsibility Ior a great heritage,
Irom Saint Vincent and the Iirst missionaries to our day; to
be docile to the Holy Spirit, who wishes to make more dy-
namic our Iidelity in creativity to the Mission; to commit
ourselves to recreate the charism, attentive to the signs oI
the times.!
With these words the Superior General opened the Visi-
tors` Meeting held in New York Irom 1"15 July 2013.!
During the meeting, the conIreres had the opportunity to
share and be enriched with the diIIerent Iorms oI expres-
sion oI Vincentian spirituality, developed in the diversities
that our continents present. But they especially empha-
sized reIlecting, deepening, and seeking concrete expres-
sions to the challenges and the lines oI action arising Irom
the 2010 Assembly. !
This led them to explore the diIIerent areas that stimu-
late the liIe oI the Congregation, such as dialog in search
oI 'Creative Fidelity in the realization oI the same.
Among these it is necessary to point out: Iormation, re-
conIiguration, dialog with the poor, dialog with the Vin-
centian Family, creativity in our ministry, and the meth-
odology oI systemic change, among others.!
It is also worth pointing out that the Preparatory Com-
mission Ior this meeting, coordinated by Joe Agostino,
worked arduously, which was reIlected in the good de-
velopment oI the meeting. The conIreres oI the host
province, together with the staII oI Saint John`s Univer-
sity, took pains to be good hosts and provide the neces-
sary resources Ior the successIul implementation oI this
meeting.!
We are grateIul to the Preparatory Commission, to the
conIreres oI the Province oI USA " East, to Saint John`s
University, to all the Visitors, and to all those whose ma-
terial and human resources made it possible to carry out
this meeting.!

Podczas spotkania Konfratrzy mieli okazj podzieli si i
wzbogaci rnymi formami duchowoci wincentyskiej
wypracowanych przez rnorodno reprezentowan na
rnych kontynentach. Ale przede wszystkim kady mia
okazj poprzez refleksj wyakcentowa, pogbi i
szuka konkretnych form wyrazu i linii dziaania
przyjtych na Konwencie Generalnym w 2010.
To prowadzio ich odkrycia rnych paszczyzn, ktre
stymuluj ycie Zgromadzenia jako dialog w
poszukiwaniu Kreatywnej Wiernoci przy jego
realizacji. Zaliczamy do nich m.in. formacj,
rekonfiguracj, dialog z ubogimi, dialog z Rodzin
Wincentysk, kreatywno w naszym posannictwie
czy metodologi zmiany systemowej.

From 5"7 August, the International Meeting oI Provincial
Treasurers was held. The Treasurer General, Joseph
Geders, prepared the topics it addressed. In carrying out
the meeting, he counted on the help oI his assistant, Mr.
Michele MiIsud, and the logistical service oI the Mother-
house oI the Daughters oI Charity in Paris.!
Among the topics covered can be highlighted the contex-
tualization, reIlection, and deepening that Father Geders
made in relating the current situation oI the provinces, the
Congregation in general, and the world Iinancial situation.
They also shared examples oI the transIormation oI some
real estate Ior better economic beneIit. These examples
were presented to provoke dialog in search oI Iinancial
alternatives within the provinces. Among the other topics
were: in"depth discussions on the role oI treasurers, on
aspects related to Solidarity in the Mission, as well as on
seeking Iunds Ior VSO`s projects.!
The SIEV Commission discussed the results oI this sur-
vey at length and then made some recommendations to
the General Council.!
At this meeting, the SIEV Commission decided to deIine
what is meant by 'Vincentian Studies. AIter discussion,
the Iollowing was adopted, pending approval oI the Gen-
eral Council:!
We define 'Jincentian historv` as. the studv of the
Congregation and its provinces, of various branches of
the Jincentian Familv and related lav and religious
movements, of specific works, ministries, and undertak-
ings within the Familv, and biographies/memoirs of sig-
nificant figures within Jincentian historv.!
We define 'Jincentian spiritualitv` as. the exploration
of the lives, writing, and spiritual development of our
Founders, Saints Jincent and Louise, our saints and
blessed and other significant Jincentian figures, themes
and strands within the Jincentian charism, and its con-
crete expressions in our apostolates, pastoral care, and
ministries.!
The Commission also agreed to participate in and pro-
mote two symposia in 2014. One is on the topic oI 'An
Exploration oI the French School oI Spirituality spon-
sored by the Paris Province and several French religious
communities in Paris. It will be held at the Motherhouse
Irom 30 June to 4 July. The other, sponsored by the
Commission on Islam"Christian Dialogue, will be held at
DePaul University in Chicago, USA, Irom 29 June to 8
July. SIEV will assist in publicizing and promoting these
two symposia, as they are excellent opportunities Ior on-
going Iormation.!
Finally, SIEV Commission members noted that, in 2017,
the Congregation will celebrate the 400
th
anniversary oI
the mission at Folleville, the 'conversion experience oI
Saint Vincent, which we oIten consider the 'spiritual
Ioundation date oI the Congregation. Discussion was
held on how to promote this important anniversary as a
time oI renewal Ior the Congregation and the Vincentian
Family. SIEV will work to make more digital resources
on Vincentian history and spirituality available so as to
assist conIreres and members oI the Vincentian Family on
this important occasion.!
The next SIEV Commission meeting is in January 2014 at
the Motherhouse in Paris.!
Meeting of the SIEV Commission!
The SIEV Commission met in Rome on 19 September to
discuss current and new projects, including a survey it
Iormulated Ior the Visitors at their July meeting. Its pur-
pose was to seek their opinions, solicit new ideas, and to
identiIy conIreres in their provinces able to be researchers
and to write on Vincentian history and spirituality. The
Visitors were most helpIul in articulating their needs Irom
SIEV Ior their provinces. In each oI the three language
groups, the majority oI Visitors chose either spirituality
and/or history as their main interest. They also helped
SIEV by indicating numbers oI available personnel Irom
their provinces who could serve as the 'next generation
oI researchers, writers, and translators. !

Spotkanie Ekonomw Prowincjalnych, ktrego tematy

Generalny. W przygotwaniu spotkania pomoga mu jego
asystentka, s. Michele Mifsud i skorzystano z pomocy
logistycznej Domu Generalnego Sistr Miosierdzia w
Paryu.
Wrd poruszanych tematw mona podkreli
kontekstualizacj, refleksj i intensyfikacj, ktre podj
ks. Geders w odniesieniu do aktualnej sytuacji Prowincji,
Zgromadzenia w oglnoci i globalnej sytuacji

zmieni niektre nieruchomoci w bardziej dochodowe

komisja SIEV, aby przedyskutowa biece i nowe

wizytatorw podczas ich lipcowego spotkania. Jej celem

pomysw, zidentyfikowanie w prowincjach Konfratrw,

As we know, our Superior General has an agenda quite

Mission, the Daughters oI Charity, and other branches oI
the Vincentian Family. He shares one oI those experienc-

Visit of the Superior General to Kazakhstan!
From 14"17 September, the Superior General, accompa-
nied by Stanislav Zontak, Assistant General, visited the
conIreres and the Daughters oI Charity in Kazakhstan.!

On Sunday, 15 September, he met and greeted the IaithIul
at the conclusion oI Mass in Szortandy (a city approxi-
mately 80 km Irom the capital, Astana), where the con-
Ireres, Maciej Mech, Pawel Kucharski, and Leszek Sma-
kosz, live and work. Later he celebrated Mass with the
IaithIul in the community in Nova Kubanka. AIter Mass,
he met the people in a room adjoining the church and
talked personally with them. Some people shared the sto-
ry oI their lives, as well as their process oI conversion.
They are a simple people with very deep Iaith.!

In late evening, the Superior General met the Daughters
oI Charity oI the three communities oI Kazakhstan
(Szortandy, Nova Kubanka, and Astana) in Szortandy and
he had a long conversation with them on the Vincentian
vocation and the situation oI both companies in the
world.!
!
On Monday, 16 September, he paid a visit to the Arch-
bishop oI Astana, together with the Visitor oI Poland, the
Provincial Treasurer, and the conIreres who work in Ka-
zakhstan. During the meeting they covered various topics
reIerring to the service oI the conIreres in the Archdio-
cese oI Astana.!
Later the Superior General visited the community oI the
Daughters oI Charity in Astana in a very poor and aban-
doned neighborhood. BeIore ending the day with the cele-
bration oI Mass, he met the local authorities oI Szortandy,
where he indicated his desire that their presence should be
oI signiIicant help too with mutual cooperation Ior the hu-
man development oI the local populations. He showed his
satisIaction and happiness that relations between the com-
munities oI brothers and sisters and the local authorities
are very good and expressed his hope that they continue
deepening in the Iuture.!

On Tuesday, 17 September, the Superior General went to
the small town oI Piotrovka, where the conIreres have be-
gun constructing the church and he blessed the Ioundation
with the hope that the work will be completed within a
year. AIter the meeting and prayer with the IaithIul oI the
city, he visited the mayor.!
!
The conIreres carry out their pastoral work in 30 commu-
nities, and this number is growing, because they discover
other regions, cities, and villages where there are Chris-
tians, who Ior a long time have not had any contact with a
priest, religious, or another person who encourages them
pastorally. Some communities have been able to trans-
Iorm any house into a chapel. In other situations, they
meet Iamilies ready to oIIer their homes as places oI pray-
er and adoration.!

The Superior General visited some oI these places and in
the evening he celebrated Mass with the IaithIul oI Kank-
rynka, where the believers oI other neighboring areas gath-
ered. At the end oI the Mass, the IaithIul, in their kindness
and simplicity, spoke about their happiness, hopes, and
diIIiculties. All oI them expressed their desire that this
type oI visit should be more Irequent, since it already
made them Ieel part oI the universal Church and assured
them that they are not
abandoned and Iorgot-
ten in these places

wincentyskiego i statusu obu Zgromadze w wiecie.

wizyty miay miejsce czciej,co pozwoli im poczu

"zagubionych" w bezkresie stepu.

'Young Jincentians, Missionaries of Charitv. Let us go to the
poor,` this motto met the Young Vincentians in Belo Horizonte,
Brazil, Irom 19"22 July, to deepen their vocation and Vincentian
spirituality, share their experiences oI service oI the poor, and
develop closer ties oI Vincentian Iraternity. Held in the 'City oI
Saint Vincent de Paul`s Boys, a great charitable work develo-
ped by Vincentian laymen Irom the SSVP, the meeting had the
participation oI 1200 persons, representing ten branches oI the
Vincentian Family Irom 20 countries.!

Moments oI prayer, Eucharistic celebrations, catechesis, works-
hops, guided visits to Vincentian works, cultural and recreational
moments marked Iour days, in climate oI much happiness and
Iraternity and with good organization. The meeting, by the con-
tent oI the reIlections, the richness oI the conviviality, and the
creative participation in the celebrations, was very enriching. In
addition, it provided the young persons with the beautiIul expe-
rience oI being and living as members oI the larger Vincentian
Family, with a common, very current and daring, ideal and with
the challenge oI walking in close collaboration and in a spirit oI
communion.!

The presence oI Yasmine Cajuste, International President oI the
JMV, oI Gregory Gay, Superior General oI the CM and the DC,
oI Michael Thio, International President oI the SSVP, oI Philip-
pe Mura, Superior General oI the Religious oI SVP, and oI Ma-
ria Rosa Monesso, MISEVI`s International Coordinator, was a
motive oI happiness and incentive Ior all the participants. The
absence oI representatives Irom some European countries, where
the Vincentian Family is strong and numerous, was regretted.!

In their creative way oI being, their enthusiasm and generosity,
the young persons celebrated their Iaith and renewed their Vin-
centian commitment oI service oI the poor. They maniIested the
Iorce oI the call that the Vincentian ideal has with youth, who,
when well supported, can do much to transIorm and rejuvenate
Vincentian practices and organizations in view oI the growth and
revitalization oI the Vincentian service oI the poor.!

w dniach 19 do 22 lipca w Belo Horizonte w Brazylii, aby
pogbi swoje powoanie i duchowo wincentysk, podzieli
si swoimi dowiadczeniami pracy z ubogimi i zacieni wizy
braterstwa wincentyskiego.Spotkanie odbyo si w'Ciudad de
dos Meninos So Vicente de Paulo' (Miasteczku Dzieci w.
Wincentego a Paulo), wielkim dziele miosierdzia utworzonym
przez wieckich ze Stowarzyszenia w. Wincentego a Paulo. W
spotkaniu wzio udzia ok. 1200 osb reprezentujcych dziesi
gazi Rodziny Wincentyskiej z 20 krajw.
Chwile modlitwy, Eucharystia, katechezy, warsztaty, wycieczki z
przewodnikiem w dzieach wincentyskich, momenty kulturalne i

braterstwa oraz dobrej organizacji. Pod wzgldem treci
rozwaa, bogactwa wspegzystencji i kreatywnego

A workshop for members of the Jincentian Familv to examine principles and practices of asset management.!
From 9"11 August 2013, a symposium was held Ior members oI the International Vincentian Family. This symposi-
um, sponsored by the Vincentian Studies Institute oI DePaul University, was held at the Motherhouse oI the Daughters
oI Charity, rue du Bac, Paris. There were three days oI workshops that included presentations, case studies, and dis-
cussions. Five key topics oI asset management were covered, as seen Irom the perspectives oI Catholic Social Teach-
ing and the Vincentian tradition. !

The participants reIlected on and penetrated the thought and spirituality oI Saint Vincent de Paul, Saint Louise de Ma-
rillac, Blessed Frederick Ozanam, and contemporary Catholic Social Teaching. The symposium was seeking as aim to
help the members oI FAMVIN to use the patrimony oI the poor wisely through a practice oI careIul and sustainable
asset management. Participants reIlected on the management oI certain types oI assets: human beings, Iinances, in-
vestments, properties, physical plant, Iundraising, governmental practices, etc. !

In addition, they shared experiences through case studies (including the means by which provinces/institutions have
become selI"sustaining, Iought corruption, and become sensitive to cultural and ecological concerns). The symposium
provided the necessary ideas in the search Ior a contemporary model Ior sustainable Vincentian asset management to
share with the International Vincentian Family.!

~I would like to live my life to serve the poor. Toshio Sato, the first 1a-
panese confrere.!
Born and raised in Fukushima, Japan, Toshio Sato earned his undergraduate degree in
international economics and dreamed oI a successIul career in business. However, Tos-
hio Ielt called to move 'in a very unexpected direction while working at a nonproIit
organization aIIiliated with the Ministry oI Foreign AIIairs at the Japanese Consulate in
Chicago.!
Toshio comes Irom Buddhism. In the Iollowing interview, he explains his process oI
conversion.!
Inspired by a ~living faith!
1oshio, you are a convert to Catholicism. Who and what led you to the Catholic Church?!
God blessed me through this fob bv allowing me to meet a Japanese Catholic who showed me a 'living faith.` While
reading [her Bible], the teachings of Jesus came alive to me through the living faith of mv Catholic friend. I could see
the glimpses of this living faith in her response to Gods love through her dailv concrete actions to others. After seve-
ral vears of working at the Consulate, I pursued a masters degree in public service management at DePaul Universitv
in Chicago. Through the program, I met so manv voung Catholics who desired to serve others selflesslv as a career,
especiallv those who are most marginali:ed and neglected bv societv. Their energv, sincere care for humanitv, and
solidaritv with the poor gave me inexplicable tranquilitv and tremendous respect. Thev inspired me so much that I
started visiting Catholic churches. I began volunteering at a sandwich window at St. Jincent de Paul parish in Chica-
go. It was there that mv eves and heart were opened to those who came for food. I was able to recogni:e the faces of
the poor on the street as fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. These were the same faces that previouslv I had not paid
attention to.!
You are a vowed member of the Congregation of the Mission. Please tell us why St. Jincent de Paul and his com-
pany are so inspiring for you.!
At DePaul Universitv, for the first time in mv life, I met Jincentian priests. Their unwavering and genuine focus on the
benefit for the poor and marginali:ed deeplv touched me. For them, 'the end` is unambiguouslv clear. to serve the
marginali:ed most effectivelv through shared leadership and bv educating others to be leaders themselves. This made
me wonder about a life devoted completelv to serving 'the least ones` who are marginali:ed in our societv, those
whom Jesus told us to serve as if thev were his own brothers and sisters. Discovering that there are Jincentian priests
actuallv doing this solved a part of mv discernment pu::le. Mv desire to serve those in need with mv whole being grew
more ... I would like to live mv life to serve the poor, our masters, and to be evangeli:ed bv them as St. Jincent was,
following Jesus as our model.!
His unshakeable commitment to those who live in poverty touched him deeply. He entered the Vincentian Seminary
and completed his Iormation and education at Saint John`s Seminary in Camarillo, CaliIornia. Toshio was ordained on
27 June 2013 in Saint Vincent de Paul Parish in Saint Louis, Missouri. During his Iormation he served with joy in
many Vincentian ministries as a volunteer and as a seminarian Irom CaliIornia to Kenya. Toshio was sent to his Iirst
assignment as Parish Vicar in the Church oI the Most Holy Trinity in Dallas.!

On the Ieast oI the Assumption oI the Blessed Virgin
Mary, 15 August 2013, thirteen deacons (eight Irom the
diocese oI Surabaya, Iour Irom the CM, and one Irom
C.J.D.) were ordained as priests by Msgr. Vincentius Su-
tikno, Bishop oI Surabaya. There were about 140 priests
and 2000 people present at the ceremony.!
In his homily Bishop Vincentius highlighted the liIe oI the Blessed Virgin Mary as a model and concrete example Ior
our liIe, both as priests and people oI God. 'Mary was IaithIul in seeking God`s will in her whole liIe. Her Iidelity
brought her to the perIection as Mother oI God and as people oI God. You, especially the new priests, should strive
continuously to live according to Mary`s example Ior this is our only oIIering to God and our dedication Ior the people
oI God.!
At the end oI the celebration, Robertus Wijanarko, Visitor oI Indonesia, announced the assignments Ior our new priests:
Gregorius Kukuh Nugroho is assigned as an animator Ior our school in Lazaris Foundation and as assistant parish priest
in Christ the King Parish, Surabaya. Henricus Yuli Kurniawan is sent as assistant parish priest in St. Vincent de Paul
Parish, Batulicin"South Kalimantan. Yustinus Edi Purwanto is assigned as Director oI Popular Mission and as assistant
parish priest in St. Joseph Parish, Kediri. Petrus Hastomo Aribie, the third Vincentian priest Irom our mission in West

European Interprovincial Internal Seminary!
On 14 September the opening oI the European Interprovincial Internal Seminary was held in Naples with six semina-
rians (one Irom Portugal, one Irom Saragossa, one Irom Rome, one Irom Naples, two Irom the Region oI Albania),
under the responsibility oI the Iormation team composed oI Roberto D`Amico (Director), Lorenzo Manca, and F. M.
Cardozo. In addition, a diocesan priest (candidate Ior the Province oI Naples) began his Internal Seminary under the
responsibility oI Giuseppe Fiorentino; he will take part in some Iormative activities oI the Interprovincial Internal Se-
minary. Present were Eli Chaves, representative oI the Superior General; the Visitors oI the Provinces oI Naples, Ro-
me, Turin, Portugal, Saragossa, Barcelona, and the Orient; representatives oI the Visitors oI Salamanca and Madrid;
several conIreres and lay Iriends.!
Father D`Amico, in a meeting with the representatives oI the provinces, presented the broad and detailed Plan oI For-
mation and several practical matters, related to the running oI the Seminary, were studied. At the Eucharist, celebra-
ted with the requisite solemnity and presided by Eli Chaves, the Director oIIicially declared the Admission oI the In-
ternal Seminarians. When the Mass concluded, those present met Ior a moment oI Iraternity, where they could exter-
nalize all their joy and hope with this signiIicant interprovincial collaborative eIIort in the Iormation oI our own. !
May the European Interprovincial Internal Seminary, now in Na-
ples, continue producing much Iruit oI renewal and missionary acti-
vity Ior our European Provinces. May God bless this work, becau-
se the cries oI the poor are great, but the workers are Iew! !
