About this audiobook

As the New Republic takes devastating losses in the ongoing war with the scattered remnants of the Empire, the galaxy's future depends on three small children -- among them the Jedi twins -- born to incredible powers and perils, as an extraordinary new saga unfolds...

While the New Republic struggles to decide what to do with the deadly Sun Crusher -- a new doomsday weapon stolen from the Empire by Han Solo -- the renegade Imperial Admiral Daala uses her fleet of Star Destroyers to conduct guerrilla warfare on peaceful planets. And now she threatens the watery homeworld of Admiral Ackbar. But as the battle for a planet rages, an even greater danger emerges at Luke Skywalker's Jedi academy. A brilliant student delves dangerously into the dark side of the Force and unleashes the spirit of an ancient master of the evil order that warped Darth Vader himself. Working together, they may become an enemy greater than the New Republic has ever fought...more powerful than even a Jedi Master can face.

The chapters are quite short, and the story flits from one perspective to another, it ultimately feels very slight and sedate and about nothing, even though there are some momentous events in the novel. All the characters are flat. Wedge Antilles falling in love with the person who designed the Death Star without knowing it would be used to destroy planets was really something, and him grieving when she loses her memories and identity was pretty underwhelming. Still, Anderson is a fairly competent story-teller, at least on the level of dialogue and sentence construction.

Chapter 2 of the Jedi Academy Trilogy. OK, so Anderson took a bit longer to build up the complexity than I expected. It is now here. And like any middle chapter, this is the most darkest with regards to what happens: a prime character has her memory wiped clean, Han Solo loses the Millennium Falcon, Luke Skywalker is struck down by one of his students, and the head of state, Mon Mothma, is quickly dying. And these are just a few of the things happening! There is so much more going on that I can't list it all! All of it though is very enjoyable and kept me on the edge of my seat. Now I'm dying to read the final chapter!

I was going to go back and re-read some of the Star Wars books I enjoyed as a kid, but now I'm less inclined since the announcement of Episode VII coming to theaters and that the producers reported they would not be following the expanded universe canon going forward. I don't mind that they're starting with a blank slate after Return of the Jedi as I'm sure a few of the better story strands are going to show up anyway. For example, this book trilogy saw the creation of Luke Skywalker's Jedi Academy which I'm bettin' will make an appearance in one form or another in the new movies.

Star Wars The Jedi Academy Trilogy Volume 2: Dark Apprentice reminds me of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back in many ways. First of all, it's somewhat darker than Jedi search, just as The Empire Strikes Back was darker than A New Hope. Also I think it took me a little longer to read than the first, which is similar to the how Star Wars V is a little longer than episode IV. One of my favorite things about this novel is the Dark Jedi spirit found living on Yavin 4, but I won't go into detail so that as not to spoil it for those who haven't read this book yet.All in all I'd say it's a worthy sequel to Jedi Search but, while it's not worse, I'm not sure that it's superior to the first either. Still, I recommend this book to any Star Wars enthusiast.

The spirit of a long-dead Jedi returns to haunt the newly formed Jedi Academy--and unfortunately, the Jedi is totally Dark Sided. By the end of the book, former-slave Kyp has become consumed by revenge, and Luke is in a coma. Woops!

Only months after studies began at Jedi Master Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Academy, a dark spirit corrupts students such as Gantoris and Kyp. Dark Apprentice by Kevin James Anderson is book two of the Jedi Academy Trilogy. I found the book to be a good sequel to Jedi Search, and also includes a large cliff hanger ending. Overall, it was a nice read that included early appearances of concepts such as Exar Kun, and the great Sith war.

Much the same as the first, I really would have liked to have seen more of the training of the Jedi students. Much of the story is focused on a potential student named Kyp and his adventures as he falls to the darkside. My problems with this book are the same as the last one. Still it's a decent book if you like Star Wars though not as good as one would hope.

The writing doesn't get any better with the second book in the trilogy. There's plenty of action and tension, but a lot of it comes from significant characters being really, really clueless. This is still worth reading if you want to familiarize yourself with significant events in the Star Wars Expanded Universe.

Why did I ever buy this one? I knew it was going to be bad after reading the first one. And now this author is meddling in the Dune series, which I categorically refuse to buy for that very reason.
