      Hondo and Fabian are a cat and dog who are bests but complete opposites. One liked adventure and the other did not.My own personal experience I can relate because I stay to myself and my brother and sister are outgoing.An classroom extension idea would be to have students share things that they like to do for fun or have students bring pictures of places that they have gone for fun to share with other students.

      This book is about Hondo the dog who gets to go to the beach and play with his friend Fred, while Fabian the cat spends the day at home. This book is very true to what dogs and cats actually do. The illustrations are beautiful and this is a very nice read.

      Beautiful artwork. Written for the very young but my older son just loves it. He laughs at Hondo and Fabian's animal adventures and delights when they're reunited for the evening. A classic.

      Hondo the dog and Fabian the cat are pets that live together. They each wake up to go on separate adventures. Hondo has fun with another friend dog, while Fabian plays with the baby at home. They go to sleep together in their favorite places at the end of the night. This books theme is all about adventure!*Caldecott Winner

      Hondo, the dog, and Fabian, the cat, start and end their day the same but, have a very different sequence of events throughout the day. Hondo spends the day out of the house, while Fabian stayed home. This is a good book to use when referring to house pets or the differences between cats and dogs.(Winner of the Caldecott Award)

      This is realistic fiction because the animals don't talk or act like humans. This is s desciption of the activities of Hondo and Fabian for a day. Dogs like to dive in the waves, and cats like to play with toilet paper (at least my cats do). The style of this book is effective for early readers. There is a sentence or two on each page accompanied by an illustration. The sentences are simple and short, but they are enough for the book.Media: pencil on watercolor paper

      With simple text and luminous artwork, children's author/illustrator Peter McCarty explores one day in the life of the eponymous Hondo and Fabian, a dog and cat duo who live together and are good friends. While Hondo heads to the seashore, to spend the day romping with his fellow canine, Fred, the feline Fabian remains at home with the baby, having his own form of fun. But at the end of the day, the two are together again, enjoying their evening meal, and their favorite napping places.Awarded a Caldecott Honor in 2003, Hondo and Fabian has a gentleness to it that is very appealing, with a simple text of no more than a sentence per page - "Two happy dogs dive in the waves. / Fabian dives for the door." - and gorgeous artwork that just seems to glow on the page. My first book by Peter McCarty was Henry in Love, which I appreciated for the artwork, but found rather uninspired, textually speaking. Here, however, the words and images work together flawlessly, resulting in one of those quietly impressive books, whose appeal can take the reader by surprise. Recommended for very young cat and dog lovers - McCarty clearly understands his felines and canines! - and for anyone looking for lovely, comforting bedtime fare for younger, preschool-age children. I myself will definitely be tracking down the sequel, to see what happens when Fabian Escapes.

      I am in love with McCarty's illustrations --- the roundness, the softness --- and the story is pretty cute, too. For me, the illustrations are what make the book art -- I could pull out pages and frame them!

      This books amazes me by its simplicity-- which almost reads as a minimalist poem-- and it's soft, incredibly cute images of a cat (Fabian) and dog (Hondo). Animal and pet lovers of all ages will love, love, love this book.

      Hondo and Fabian is both written an illustrated by Peter McCarty. It is the perfect bedtime story for the tiny animal lover. Hondo and Fabian each get to have an adventure: Hondo gets to go out to play at the beach while Fabian has a lovely time at home playing with the baby and unrolling some toilet paper. At the end of the day, both the extroverted Hondo and his introverted counterpart Fabian, are reunited with full tummies and warm bed. The illustrations add to the gentle dreamlike story and would be a wonderful way to send a little one off to sleep.

      This well-deserved Caldecott Honor book is delightful. It is a simple tale of Hondo the dog who has a trip to the beach frolicking in the water and Fabian the cat who stays home with the baby. There is a dream-like, air brushed quality to the illustrations.

      The pictures are pretty to please the adult buyer, the text is simple and authentic to please the tot listener, but instead of the best of both, *I* found the sum to be weak and unappealing.
