    In The Sky-Liners, Louis L'Amour introduces Flagan and Galloway Sackett, heading west from Tennessee to seek their fortunes.       Flagan and Galloway Sackett are brothers who head west with an reluctant rescue, pursued by a gang determined to recapture the young lady and kill the Sacketts in the process. More action, less retrospection and self-examination in this volume, which I liked.

      Flagan and Galloway Sackett are mentioned in The Sackett Brand and this book follows on its heels. The Sacketts don't go looking for trouble, but somehow it seems to find them. They cross the villainous Black Fletchen early in the book, spiriting away Judith, a girl he's set his eyes on -- or maybe it is her horses and the land she'll inherit out west? These Tennessee boys do what they do best by living honestly, killing the bad guys, sending the wannabe bad guys either home or to the grave, and saving the girl. The book ended up being a "feel good book" in that everything turns out as it should, no surprise in most Westerns. Go ahead an add it to your Western collection.

      Just like all the rest of the Louis L'Amour books, this was a fun read. Nothing really outside of normal, except for the fact that maybe L'Amour is learning how to do some character development. At least he toyed a bit with it for James "Black" Fetchen. Like the rest of Louis L'Amour characters, everybody else fell fairly flat on the page. In fact, I think he got a mite carried away introducing characters into the story. There was a gun fight, where probably a dozen characters were named, and I was having a hard time keeping track of who was who, and who they were fighting for.

      Also, the book just sort of abruptly ends. There is a gun fight all the way to the last page, the Sackett boys (are they father/son or brothers?) decide to watch the stage roll away, and end of story. I've noticed L'Amour likes to do this with a lot of his stories, as if he struggles knowing to to properly conclude a story.

      However, the conflict was over cattle and a girl, and very little about gold, which was a first. And the gun fights, cattle roundups, dialogue, and wood craft were all fun to read. The pace held well in this story, and it was fun to see Flagan and Galloway play off each other.
