Readers Annotation: Tibby, Carmen, Lena and Bridget didn't spring from the same molds, still they're best friends. When they all are getting ready to spend their first summer apart they find a pair of jeans in a thrift store. Each girl tries them on and magically the pants fit each one perfectly. They decide the pants are magic and plan on sharing them over the summer. Plot Summary:Tibby, Carmen, Lena and Bridget didn't spring from the same molds, still they're best friends. When they all are getting ready to spend their first summer apart they find a pair of jeans in a thrift store. Each girl tries them on and magically the pants fit each one perfectly. They decide the pants are magic and plan on sharing them over the summer. They take turns wearing the pants and then mail them to one of the friends. They are supposed to write a letter about what happened to them while they were wearing the jeans, kind of like a shared journal. Carmen is planning on spending the summer at her dad’s house who is newly divorced from her mother. When she gets there she is thrown into turmoil because her dad is getting married and he will have stepchildren to replace her. Lena goes to Greece to visit her grandma & grandpa who barely speak English. While she is there she falls in love with Stavros and is forbidden to see him because of a long standing family fued. Bridget goes to soccer camp in California and ends up losing her virginity to one of the counselors. Tibby is working at Wallmans in their hometown and begins filming a documentary for the summer. She makes friends with a young girl who becomes her assistant only to learn that she is dying from Leukemia. Evaluation:This story is amazing. The author does a wonderful job of creating four unique stand alone stories and tying them all together. Each character has an obstacle to overcome and each one learns a valuable life lesson from the experience. It is a heartwarming portrayal of best friends who are completely different and how their love for each other helps them get through the most difficult times of their lives. I've always enjoyed the movie so I wanted to read the book! This book did not disappoint!

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. When I read the blurb I thought it would be a light, chick lit read, but I was wrong. The four girls in this book deal with some major issues including relationships, terminal illness, family break-ups, heart ache, fears and much more. Each girl faces her own problems but their friendship remains strong. This coming of age story will appeal to teenage girls as I'm sure they will be able to relate to at least one of the main characters who all have different strengths and weaknesses, and appreciate the importance of true friends.

I saw the movie first and the. Read the book. It's a nice young adult book. The pants are magical as they give the girls confidence and insights that they already possessed.

These books were always a huge part of my childhood, just as much as harry potter. I absolutely adore all of them.

I don't know why I'm reading this, except that I'm a sucker for sisterhood type stories. The movies Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood and Now and Then appealed to me; I suppose I put this book in the same category. However, maybe the movie would be better over the book... stay tuned.

DONE: The book was half over before the "pants" started to play a role, and even then, it was minor. Really, this book is four stories about four (or five, if you count Bailey) girls and their summers. The girls just happen to be friends and they happen to be in different places and they happen to mail around a pair of jeans. Otherwise, romance finds them too easily; they do, say, and think things beyond their maturity (except when they are too childish); and everything works out in the end.
    Bleh.
The most disappointing part is that no one recognizes Bridgit is bipolar. Poor girl.

I became interested in this book after seeing the movie, and, though the issues the girls face are slightly different, I think the book and the movie tell equally interesting stories. These stories are essentially about love, the loss thereof, and coming to terms with the loss. Carmen is openly desperate for her father's affections, but she doesn't know how to make it clear to him that she needs him and he's hurt her by not being there. Bridget is struggling with the unresolved issues about her mother's suicide years before. Tibby is struggling with both the cancer of and death of the friend she makes. Lena is struggling with her own fears of getting emotionally attached (her story is the most different from the movie). The girls use the pants to face their own challenges- even the hardships they face in them help the girls learn how to work through their losses.

I think this book is fantastic. I sincerely wish I would have had such a fantastic group of friends growing up. I really love that this book honors friendship and kindness amongst girls instead of showing girls in a negative light *cough gossip girl cough*.

I chose VOYA code 3Q because it was highly readable and without serious defects, but still didn't have the depth and complexity I wanted. I chose 4P for popularity because the teen response to this book was overwhelmingly positive, the book was made into a movie, and it also generated a couple of sequels. I did not chose 5P because it centers around girls, girl friendships, and stereotypically girly issues. So, I don't think this novel has tremendous popularity among boys.I'd never read this book before, so I thought it would be a good idea to read it and see what the fuss was about. I enjoyed this as a light and easy read, but as I said, there wasn't a lot of depth in it, nor complexity in the characters, so it wasn't a totally satisfying feeling when I got to the end and closed the book. I like to feel like I've just finished a wonderful, huge Thanksgiving meal when I finish devouring a book. With The Sisterhood, I felt more like I'd had a Snickers bar -- some substance there, but a lot of sweet all around. Perhaps teens like things a little simpler and rosier. The Kirkus review was positive, calling the book a "feel-good novel with substance," and pointing out that "Brashares renders each girl individual and lovable in her own right, emphasizing growing up without growing apart." I agree with this, but I thought there was more room for critique of the novel. Developmentally, the book deals with gaining independence, growing up, and gaining confidence in adult situations. It also brings to mind the importance of friendships with peers in adolescence. However, it spills over into the morality tale arena sometimes, and almost hits the reader over the head with the morals of the story lines.

Lena, Bridget, Tibby, and Carmen were having their first summer apart in their 15 years together. They've been best friends since birth because their mothers were in a pregnancy aerobics class at Gilda's. The day before their departure they found a pair of jeans that fit all four of their different body types. They decided these were magic pants and that was how the sisterhood was born.During the summer they passed the pants on between the four of them. Lena was visiting her grandparents in Greece trying to figure out how to love. Bridget was at a summer camp in Baja California falling deeply in love with someone she couldn't have. Tibby was stuck at home in Maryland working at Wallman's, making a documentary, and gaining a new friend. Carmen was spending time with her dad in South Carolina when she got a fateful surprise. The girls have the pants as a way to stay together no matter where life takes them. This is a very good book for girls 10 and up. I really enjoyed it. I am so happy there are four books in the series. This is definitely the best of the four. I read them all during the summer before 8th grade.

I have to confess I did slightly underestimated the story as the usual 'cliche teenage stories', its actually a bit it is but on the contrary it did have this particular.. I don't know ..turnpoints?? something that make it so differently from the others, it has this cozy, heartfelt moving feeling while reading tho it was not told as so over dramatic but you know there is strong urge of feels, to be honest I did spare a slight tears on it. so I guess its a 4.5 for me.

Perfect feel good book! I really enjoyed this one, even with the multitude of characters I felt like I was part of the story and didn’t feel like I forgot who was who, so easy to do in a book. Can’t believe I didn’t read this sooner

    READ IN DUTCH

Some of my friends recommended this book to me, but I wasn't blown away by the premise of four girls sharing a pair of jeans.

The book was OK, but not really something I like to read. The story was a bit simple. It's a nice read between two other books, but nothing special

    From Carmen's point of view.

The two movies passed on this series are among my favorite movies to watch. Though I was surprised by a lot of differences between the books and the movies, the books are really warm and enjoyable and so fun to read.

I finished the book late at night yesterday. And I really loved it and enjoyed it. A lot of parts made me cry and a lot of other parts made me laugh out load. It is a very warm story. Though there are so many different things in the movies and books, I still liked both versions. even the new part of Lena's story (which is my favorite) is still good. I am really looking forward to read more of the series.

This book tells the story about four best friends. They find a pair of pants that magically fits all four of them perfectly. They are about to spend their first summer apart so they decide to each where the pants for a week the write if anything exciting happens in them. Then they send them to the next friend and she does the same. They start to realize that it is not the magic of the pants that makes them special but the friendship that the four of them share together. It is not about the pants, it about the lifelong friendship they have formed. This book would be classified as realistic fiction.

Tibby, Lena, Bridget, and Carmen are best friends and they've been together since before the were born, really. But this is the first summer they're all going somewhere different. Apart. But luckily they found some magical pants at the local thrift store and they swear to send the traveling pants to each girl with expectations of a magical summer.

It was a decent book, very teenage girl-growing-pains slice of life sort of book.

I am glad that it wasn't all about romance in this book, but actually tackled other issues besides boys and fluff and other touchy-feeley things.

Even though there were four characters, I think Brashares managed to juggle their stories pretty well. It was like a series of vignettes strung together to create an overarching story that all converged and overlapped.

I don't know. Maybe I'm just too old now, whereas if I were 15 all over again, I'd be empathizing with all of their stories and crying and laughing with them. But I read it and I'm amused and a little sad, but it doesn't impact me that much.

Also, the traveling pants theme doesn't really work for me. It isn't exactly magically, they don't really mean much in the story except for linking the story together.

I've found that characters are a little too blunt as well. Probably to progress the story as quickly as possible. But Bailey is a little too precocious. So is Effie. And Paul. All the side characters speak the obvious truth to the main characters too much. They say it until the girls finally accepts it and does something about it (usually around the time the pants comes around). It's a little too straight-forward and it makes me feel like it's a little too cliche and more boring.

Three stars. And if the story weren't about more than romance, I would have given it two. But since I think the story did very well for a YA chick flick, three stars. No more than that because I couldn't get into the feel of the book.
Recommended for people who like good sisterhood camaraderie and something more than just romance. Be warned that the audience is definitely around 12-17 years old.

This book was a very cute read! It is the perfect summer book. The plot was very good, and I enjoyed the characters. My emotions changed through out the book. Part of the book made me happy, and another part made me want to cry . It hurts to lose someone you love. Overall, it was a cute book, and I will be reading the rest of the series. 4 stars! The reason why I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5 is because, the book would have been better if it was in first person for each character. It was such a good book, and I recommend it.

This book is one of those fun summer reads. It's fairly light, but brave enough to tackle some pretty heavy issues at the same time. It also wins for friendship. I consider the first one the best of the series, but on a whole most follow a similar pattern. I never really cared for Bridget, but I liked the other characters well enough.

Well I finally took the plunge into reading this book and I was pleasantly surprised. I quite enjoyed the story of Carmen, Lena, Bridget and Tibby and their first summer apart.Carmen bought a pair of pants at a thrift shop and never wore them. She was going to get rid of them the first summer they were all going away except for Tibby. While everyone is at Carmen's house the pants are spotted and the girls all try them on. Each girl is different in height and size but the pants fit each one. They are magical.Carmen is going to visit her father in South Carolina, Lena is traveling to Greece to visit her grandparents with her sister Effie, Bridget is going to Soccer Camp in Baja California. Tibby will be staying home and working at her new job at Wallman's.The adventures the girls and the pants go on is just so interesting. Carmen gets to her father's and learns that her father is getting married and has a new family. Lena's Grandmother wants to fix her up with a local boy named Kostos. And Bridget is the one that is just full of energy and sees a boy at the soccer camp very attractive. Tibby is making a documentary and meets a girl name Bailey. The different adventures each one goes through both with the pants and without is entertaining. I found each of the girls to be very different and could be annoying at times. They were well written as teenagers.

I don't think that I was expecting this book to be quite as intense as it turned out to be. Intense in a good way, mind you, but unexpected. Lena was my favorite of the girls, though in some ways Carmen's story caught my attention more. I didn't particularly like Tibby's story, but I thought she did a fantastic job on Bee. (I do, however, wish she'd been a little bit less vague about what happened between Bee and Eric. Not graphic details or anything, but I was never quite clear if they just made out or actually had sex. On the other hand, if she's not setting Bee up to be manic depressive, I'll be incredibly shocked. Seriously.) Overall it was an awesome book, and now I need to get my hands on the other three. :)
