TREASURES OF THE FRONTIER
This priceless collection of once lost stories brings to life a time of desperate violence and true courage in a wide-open country of fortune seekers and dreamers, lawbreakers and pioneers. A newly sworn-in marshal must outwit a mysterious killer who's fleecing his neighbors while secretly cutting their throats. . . . A young drifter, wounded in a gunfight, finds a chance to change his ways-but he must be willing to pay with his life. . . . A fiercely independent woman and a mysterious stranger take a desperate stand against those out to drive her from her home. . . . And in the haunting short novel Monument Rock, a shadowy horseman delivers a terrifying message to an innocent young woman-the shocking truth about the two men closest to her heart. History, humor, action, and adventure fill the pages of these masterpieces, told by one of the foremost storytellers of our time.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Meh, good, not great. Supposedly, this is the last book published by the L'Amour estate of unique Louis L'Amour stories that have been unpublished. My grandfather didn't have this book in his collection, so I checked a hardbound copy out from the library.
It's a collection of short stories that starts out with "A Man Named Utah". It's about a character named Utah Blaine, and I guess there is a full novel named after this cowboy, so I'll have to read that next. The collection ends with a 6-chapter novella about Kilkenny, making it the final Kilkenny story in that series.
As is the case with most L'Amour books, there is nothing really remarkable about any of these stories. I was really hoping that "Monument Rock", the Kilkenny story, would end with Kilkenny dead. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. However, you can certainly tell there was much editing, if any to that final short story. Kilkenny finds some paperwork from Lona's real father, about his estate, the ranch and holdings, some money, etc. A proper conclusion would be Kilkenny bringing this cache find to a lawyer, and getting using the law to straighten out Poke Markham and the Bad Guys. However, as soon as you read about it, it's forgotten, never brought up again. I'm guessing Louis forgot about it when he was writing, and never got back to it.
It's funny, but when looking at the Table of Contents, seeing the short story titles, I honestly can't remember what any of them are about. But, when flipping through the pages, I am reminded about the stories. "Battle at Burnt Camp" is probably my favorite in the book.1 person found this helpful
