About this audiobook

There are ghosts on the Black Isle.
Ghosts that no one can see.
No one...except Cassandra.

Uprooted from Shanghai with her father and twin brother, young Cassandra finds the Black Isle's bustling, immigrant-filled seaport, swampy jungle, and grand rubber plantations a sharp contrast to the city of her childhood. And she soon makes another discovery: the Black Isle is swarming with ghosts.

Haunted and lonely, Cassandra at first tries to ignore her ability to see the restless apparitions that drift down the street and crouch in cold corners at school. Yet despite her struggles with these spirits, Cassandra comes to love her troubled new home. And soon, she attracts the notice of a dangerously charismatic man.

Even as she becomes a fearless young woman, the Isle's dark forces won't let her go. War is looming, and Cassandra wonders if her unique gift might be her beloved island's only chance for salvation . . .

Taking readers from the 1920s, through the Japanese occupation during WWII, to the Isle's radical transformation into a gleaming cosmopolitan city, THE BLACK ISLE is a sweeping epic--a deeply imagined, fiercely original tale from a vibrant new voice in fiction.

An interesting read which traces an Southeast Asian island through its 20th Century history as a cultural melting pot and into a vibrant city. Cassandra, the narrator, is in a unique position to see this transformation, but she also sees the island's past too - in the form of ghosts. I found this novel interesting, especially the final chapters as the island is transformed, but at times the story seemed to drag along and Cassandra is not always the most likable character.

Li and Cassandra are twins from Shanghai. When Cassandra is about 8, she starts being able to see ghosts everywhere. Her father takes the children and moves to the Black Isle. The first few years, they eke out an existence while Cassandra goes to school. Later he takes them out of the seaport city to run a rubber plantation but he is continually distracted and unable to focus, the children are the ones that end up running the plantation. As adults, Cassandra and Li go different ways and have very different lives. Cassandra learns to deal with the visions while coping with the Japanese occupation of the island during WWII. AT times the story is brutal and grim, especially when Cassandra is held prisoner by a Japanese officer and kept as his "wife", being abused and isolated. She is a survivor, however and does what she has to to live. After the war she gets involved with a rising politician who exploits her ability to see ghosts. The book is very well written but, as i said, it can be dark and stark at times. The story is told by Cassandra to a stranger, a woman who seems to be researching the history of the Black Isle but she, too, has a connection to Cassandra. I did like the book but it wouldn't be for everyone.
