About this audiobook

It's about the disappearance forty years ago of Harriet Vanger, a young scion of one of the wealthiest families in Sweden . . . and about her octogenarian uncle, determined to know the truth about what he believes was her murder.

It's about Mikael Blomkvist, a crusading journalist recently at the wrong end of a libel case, hired to get to the bottom of Harriet's disappearance . . . and about Lisbeth Salander, a twenty-four-year-old pierced and tattooed genius hacker possessed of the hard-earned wisdom of someone twice her age who assists Blomkvist with the investigation. This unlikely team discovers a vein of nearly unfathomable iniquity running through the Vanger family, astonishing corruption in the highest echelons of Swedish industrialism and an unexpected connection between themselves.

Contagiously exciting, it's about society at its most hidden, and about the intimate lives of a brilliantly realized cast of characters, all of them forced to face the darker aspects of their world and of their own lives.

Editor's Note

Complex & compelling…

Few characters have become as iconic as Lisbeth Salander (the girl who has the dragon tattoo, and much, much more) and Mikael Blomkvist in the Millennium series. Those two stole my heart in this complex and compelling thriller.

I never fully warmed up to this book, but it did end up being a page turner for me towards the end. Felt a little strange about the book wanting to be enlightened and not exploit women, but still use the exploitation of women as a plot-mover. Big redeemer for me? That the main female character remains somewhat a mystery and enigmatic. Though please no more books with titles about "the girl" with something or "the wife" of something. Please. After all that complaining, it's a decent read, better than I'd imagined.

After having his career take a dive, a once-respected journalist is hired to write the biography of a wealthy man. However, the assignment behind the assignment is to solve the mystery of his niece who has been missing (presumed dead) for decades.I was disappointed when the end quickly arrived, but realized that I had a very good time throughout the reading process. I didn't consider this one a page-turner in the same sense as a thriller (even though some consider this a thriller), but I became completely immersed whenever I had some reading time. The writing, in and of itself, had such a flow, and the many components of the storyline merged together seamlessly. It wasn't without its flaws, though. I didn't necessarily care for some of the moral issues (or lack thereof), but they didn't bother me immensely; however, that being said - I didn't have any connections with the characters either. BUT, apparently for me, a very good story, in conjunction with very good writing skills equals a worthy read even without the connections.I will definitely go see the movie of #1; I have #2 on my TBR Shelf and #3 is on its way. Lots to look forward to! (4.25/5)Originally posted on: Thoughts of Joy

Definitely had high points and low points; the plot itself was intricate, fun, dark and twisted, but I think the challenge the translation presented was overwhelming at some points, and the text became just a laundry list of facts. (A laundry list which turned out to not matter so much in the grand scheme of things, was the disappointing part.)

All in all a fast read with a fascinating series of events. I think another crack at the translation would make a huge difference.

A solid thriller, but I was expecting more considering the hype surrounding it. The mystery itself, however, was very interesting and unfolded in a believable manner. Lisbeth Salander was also a fairly interesting character, even though she seemed a little less believable.

It took me awhile to get into this book. I must have been half way through before I started really enjoying it. The Salander character was great, and the book was the most interesting when it was writing about her. There were a lot of characters to keep straight, I felt like I really had to concentrate when I was reading it.

The translation from the Sweedish makes the reading a little difficult and the names are so unfamiliar. It wasn't my favorite.

A business journalist investigates a decades-old missing person case.1/4 (Bad).I made it through 200 pages before finally giving up. Larsson demonstrates zero interest in holding an audience. This is a "thriller" for people who think the financial section of the newspaper is a good read. I only made it as far as I did because I'd already bought the sequels and really wanted it to get better.

This is the first novel I have read that is set in Sweden, and I must say, for someone who comes from sunny Sri Lanka - it was exotic! I devoured every description and although I have been to the capital Stockholm it left me wanting to see the northern countryside.
Keeping setting aside, I also loved the characters. There are so many character flaws and temperaments to deal with and so many social issues touched on that this was more than mere crime fiction. Larsson had also gone to great lengths to ensure questions are answered and every action stems from an incident that is explained to the reader. I was a bit confused in the middle of the story, I must admit, and the pace lagged a bit, and I wondered where it was all heading as the story did not seem to connect with the crime that was the centre of the plot.
But the pace increased and at the climax everything made sense in a wonderful way, and I am impatient to get my hands on book 2.

This book had a slow beginning, but after that it became a great crime thriller which I couldn't put down, despite some gruesome scenes. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Very good. Mystery. suspense, Takes place in Sweden. Involves a missing girl, family dynamics and perversion. Some violence, but is bearable. Writing style good. Takes some getting into and then eager to find the solution. Slow reading even if it holds my interest.

I knew I'd get sucked into to this trilogy sooner or later. It came along on a vacation and once it got going, I tore through it and the second. Solid social commentary mystery with more and more built up around Larssons character, Lisbeth. He's totally in love with her and she plays out the revenge fantasies of many people.

I work in a bookstore and this arrived as an ARC several days before the promotional material, and thusly the hype surrounding it, arrived. I had no idea upon grabbing it that it was to become of falls "hot new reads." That's my story and I'm sticking with it.The back story is this:Stieg Larsson, political journalist and activist in Sweden, completed a trilogy (with The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo being the first), which were eventually sold to a publisher. Shortly before the publication of the book, Larsson died of a massive heart attack in 2004. Rumours of his death as not being natural have been swirling, which perhaps have lent greater mystique to the series. The books were published to great acclaim and became international bestsellers. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was released in the U.S. in September, 2008.Mikael Blomkvist, a middle-aged journalist/activist, has been found guilty of libel for a piece he wrote against Hans-Erik Wennerström, a corrupt Swedish industrialist. Blomkvist, known for his insightfully and well researched pieces, leaves his old life defeated and broken. He is contacted by Henrik Vanger, an aging patriarch of a well-connected family to help him with one thing: Solve a 40 year old mystery of the possible murder and kidnapping of the patriarch's beloved niece while working under the guise of researching the Vanger family history. In return, Vanger will hand over evidence to Blomkvist that will nail Wennerström to the wall for good. What follows is a twisting, complex and at times horrifying, thriller that scourges to the bottom of human nature. As Blomkvist continues to dig into the history of the Vangers, and discovering what actually happened on that fateful day in 1964, the more of the family horrors began to surface. There is a reason why the book was originally published in Sweden under the title, "Men Who Hate Women."Larsson is graphic in his descriptions and at times, the brutality of what he describes is off-putting. One one level, are we really all that innocent or are we just oblivious to what happens around us? Are some family histories better left buried or will redemption come if they are unearthed? One would like to think that not all humans can be as bad as apparently some of the Vanger (and other minor characters laced neatly through the book) can be, but on the other, we hear and see about these horrors in our daily news consumption.Larsson addresses many themes in his novel, good versus evil, love and redemption, self-sacrifice and luck versus chance and fate. Lisbeth Salander, the girl with the dragon tattoo, has been discussed as an unforgeable character and enlightened character who works with Blomkvist on researching the mystery. What has happened to her, in her life, is as equally shocking and despairing as what occurred within the Vanger family - but Salander is not a victim and she despises those who, in her mind, who are regardless of situation and circumstance. She is a woman whom on some level we all want to be and yet on another, repulse from. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo will pull you in and and keep you hooked until the very last page. Some of the same reviews mentioned early stated that they found the ending incomplete and wholly unsatisfying. On one hand, I can see why that would think that, Larsson's intention for a trilogy (hopefully the next two books will be available in the U.S.) leaves a lot of things unsettled and unfinished. But do not let that dissuade you from reading this novel, it will make you think, act, hope and hug your loved ones close to you.

They say the third time is the charm, and in this case, I think it was more the audiobook than the third time. I felt time and time again picking up this book that it just wasn't moving fast enough to keep my interest. It is a genre that I typically love, and even so, I still don't feel like I enjoyed this book more than 3 stars worth.

I listened to a little over half of it the first day because I was driving and it was a great companion. However, the next time I was in the car for a long period of time I found that it just wasn't as interesting and I switched to music about halfway through the drive. Upon getting back into my morning routine, there were several mornings that I just didn't listen to my audiobook while getting ready, which is also unusual for me.

I know a lot of people adore this book, but I am just not one of them.

I got this book over a year ago and attempted to read it when I first got it but the first chapter was painfully boring for me and it was shelved (not something I like to do, once I start a book I commit to it but this was an exception at the time). I picked up again, pushed myself through the first chapter and continued on, I'm glad I did. I didn't have high expectations or any idea really what the book was about other than it was inspired by the author witnessing a rape and regretting not doing anything, something very sensitive and can be a uncomfortable read. The story had several plots going on and overall to be very separate from each other until midway through the book. The drama with the magazine and Mikael is mild and appears randomly through out the main plot, which made it confusing at times keeping track of which characters were part of what story line. The Vagners especially were hard to keep track of as long as their back stories, who were their parents, their children, schools, who was there and so on. I know there are two more books in the series and I intend to read them, but I wished there was more back story to Salander, not everything of course, but something (especially since in the movie they mentioned something that I don't recall reading & after looking into it, it wasn't in the book). Overall this was a good read and I am glad I gave it another try. I look forward to reading the other books.

This was a fantastic book, and I can't even begin to understand why I waited so long to read it. While some of the content is disturbing, the writing is brilliant and highly engaging, even as the mystery is deeply intriguing. There are definitely some cultural elements there that take some getting used to, and which greatly color the narrative, but I can definitely definitively say that this is a highly worthwhile read. Actually one of the few cases where the hype is worth listening to.

Its hard to escape the fact that "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and its sequels are everywhere lately. And with hype like this book has been receiving, its always hard to tell whether or not it is actually deserved.I can say however, that this book is definitely worth it.The story follows two main characters: Mikael Blomkvist, an investigative journalist hired to look into a decades-old murder, and Lisbeth Salander, the girl with the dragon tattoo and an anti-social personal investigator. The plot follows Blomkvist as he dives into the family history of the Vangers, a burnt out Swedish version of the Rockefellers and a murder that occurred on their family estate in the 1960s. As with all good mysteries however, the story is much more complex than it first seems and things quickly spiral out of control.Without a doubt, this is one of the finest mysteries I have ever read. Whether or not you are a mystery addict or only an occasional reader like myself, you should check this book out. Its one book that actually lives up to its hype.

have tried twice - can't get into it......

OK - broke my cardinal rule & saw the movie (swedish) before reading the book. I feel so... dirty!

Will get on the stick & read this (and the GWPwF, as the movie is at the Belcourt!)

3 seems to be the charm, tho it is my "lunchtime" book. So slow progress. Will keep on - am enjoying it, just so little time to read....

This was a very difficult book for me to start. In fact, I checked it out from the library and started it twice. I just couldn't get into it-seemed boring and some the translation was a little weird. Then I read another member's review and he had the same issues I had, until he read until about page 45. So I went out and bought my own copy so I could read at my own speed, and low and behold, that reviewer was right! I don't normally write reviews, as usually I don't agree with what most people like, but I just had to with this book.

If you are like me and are intimidated by it's size and haven't liked the beginning, just stick with it-it is quite an amazing story!

Not my sort of thing at all, but wow, so absorbing. I couldn't stop once I started. I think the writing must be good, but it was certainly invisible as I was reading- I was inside the book entirely. Some bits were so suspenseful I had to put it down and walk away- but I came right back. The only thing that struck me as odd was Larsson's apparent obsession with Salander's tattoos & piercings. If he mentioned them once, he mentioned them a million times- and generally in the context of someone or other being shocked or appalled by them.

The characters (the good guys, anyway) were sympathetic and involving. The mystery was good. I'm on to the next one.

ETA: After thinking about it overnight, I went to Wikipedia and read the plot summaries of #2 & #3. That was plenty.
