About this audiobook

From bestselling authors Ilona Andrews, Yasmine Galenorn, Allyson James, and Jeanne C. Stein comes an anthology of four all-new novellas featuring powerful women who know how to handle a hex or two.

In "Double Hexed" from Allyson James, a novella of the Stormwalker series, Janet and her friends find themselves locked in her hotel, victims of a hex cast by a very powerful sorcerer. And, as they work to release the spell before the sorcerer kills them all, they realize that their worst enemies just might be themselves.

In "Blood Debt" from Jeanne C. Stein, bounty-hunter-turned-vampire Anna Strong is visited by three witches who ask her to right an old magical wrong. Anna will have to live up to her name to make it through alive.

In "Magic Dreams" from Ilona Andrews, old legends and frightening nightmares come to life. The shapeshifting Tigress Dali Harimau finds herself in deep water when she must challenge a dark being to a battle of wits, or risk losing the man she secretly longs for.

Finally, in Yasmine Galenorn's "Ice Shards," Iris Kuusi, a Finnish house sprite who lives with the D'Artigo sisters, must journey to the frozen Northlands to confront the crazed shadow of the former lover she's accused of murdering, so she can break the curse keeping her from marrying the man she loves.

This is a must-listen collection for fans of the paranormal.

Ilona Andrews

“Ilona Andrews” is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian, and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.) They have co-authored four New York Times and USA Today bestselling series: the urban fantasy of Kate Daniels, rustic fantasy of the Edge, paranormal romance of Hidden Legacy, and Innkeeper Chronicles. They live in Texas with their two children and many dogs and cats.

    Review for Magic Dreams

Dali has always been a bit peculiar to me, but then again, I thinks she’s supposed to be that way to everyone. I often wondered what her background and motivations were and now I know and oh my! I loved her so much! This is a fast, intense read/listen and it has a great balance of thrills/chills and suspense, along with a bit of romance. I’m all about the romance but too much can kill a story and not enough can make me lose interest. This had the perfect ratio for me. And lordie! When this wraps up, let’s just say Jim turned me into a swoony mess!

In order to get to this one you’re going to need to read the other before it but I gotta say that this has been my fave...it’s all about the geek to me!

Novella featuring a nearsighted weretiger and her struggle to save a hot guy from her pack from a soul-sucking monster. Decent paranormal, though you have to take on faith that they both love each other lots.

I only read the Ilona Andrews story out of this book - haven't yet read books by any of the other authors, and I didn't feel like reading short stories in worlds I am not yet familiar with. But I enjoyed the story I did read very much.

This is a book of urban fantasy/fantasy stories. I took the book out because I like Ilona Andrews writing. The one story, in the book, Magic Dreams is quite good, focusing on Dani Harriman and Joe Shrapshire. I tried the other three stories and just couldn't get into them. I made more of an effort on one of the three that seemed more promising and stopped halfway through -- just couldn't be bothered with finishing it. Maybe if you were familiar with the those authors other writing, the stories might have been interesting.

What I great collections of authors in this book. This book has a little bit of everything in here. Some of the Kate Daniels series, some for the otherworld series, some of the stormwalker series, and some vampire series as well. This was a great book!

The first story was great fun, and the rest were also fairly enjoyable. I liked the Yasmine Galenorn story as well, though it was surprising to see it here (it was more of a novella than a short story). A nice collection.

Hexed features four stories that are all part of ongoing series. The reason I wanted to read Hexed was for the short story Magic Dreams by Ilona Andrews, which takes place between the Kate Daniels series Magic Bleeds (Book 4) and Magic Slays (Book 5). Magic Dreams teams up alpha Jim Shrapshire with vegetarian were-tigress Dali Harimau. Jim has been taken over by a magic force that is killing him, and it is up to Dali to figure out how to save his life. She has to use her own magical abilities to fight a strong evil without the help of her alpha, the man she secretly loves. This is a great story that fits all of the action you would expect from a Kate Daniels novella into a neat little package. I hope we get to hear more from Jim and Dali future books. This was by far the best of the book. Ice shards by Yasmine Galenorn is part of the Otherworld series. It finally tells the tale of why Iris, the house sprite living with the The D'Artigo sisters, left behind her life in the Northlands. She must face a dark secret from her past or never fully be with the man she now loves. This story was alluded to in the Otherworld books; it was actually a nice break from the sisters to have a short story focus on Iris. Double hexed by Allyson James is part of the Storm Walker series. In this case Janet and her friends are trapped in her hotel due to a hex and have to figure out how to break free before it kills them all. I’ve never read this series, but want to get to it now that I’ve read this enjoyable short story. It’s filled with interesting characters and great interactions among them. Finally, Blood Debt by Jeanne C. Stein is a short story in the Anna Strong Chronicles. This was another series I hadn’t read, but the short story was enough to get me started. In this case Anna must appear before a tribunal that wants her to face justice for the death of an old foe. To ensure Anna appears as requested (because when does Anna ever do what is requested?) the brother of one of the witches will be killed in her place if she doesn’t show. Much mayhem, and a little romance, ensues. All in all Hexed gives a nice assortment of stories from a variety of authors, and each is entertaining.

I only listened to the Ilona Andrews story. This one is Jim and Dali's story and as much as I enjoyed it, I had hoped for just a little more in the romance department of this story - the bedroom door was securely shut sadly. As much as I liked Jim's declaration, it came right at the end of the story and there wasn't really any of them happy together which I missed. Also, I think Renee Raudman uses a different (more Asian sounding) voice for Dali (and a different Jim voice too) in the Kate Daniels books but it seemed to me that she was using pretty much her Kate Daniels voice for Dali here and her Curran voice for Jim. Maybe the Dali voice is hard to sustain because this story is told from Dali's first person POV. Coming right off listening to Magic Slays however, the voices were a bit too similar to Kate and Curran and it did throw me a little. It was those things which stopped the listen being an A for me. However, the story itself was very good - I like Dali and it was nice to see her save the day and Jim being the one in trouble for a change!

I only read the Kate Daniels short story, Magic Dreams. I may or may not read the other shorts in the future. I loved this short on Dali and Jim. I loved the scene when Jim met Dali's mother, it was funny. I like Dali because she is smart and funny. She is a unique shapeshifter because she doesn't eat meat and faints at the sight of blood. This was a great short story. I hope Dali and Jim get their own book someday.Jim is infected and Dali must find a golden snail in order to save him. She puts herself at risk when she goes to the black market in search of the snail. Dali has to use her unreliable magic to defeat an enemy before it is to late for Jim.

I borrowed Hexed from the library as an introduction to authors I had been intending to try - Ilona Andrews and Yasmine Galenorn specifically. Like many collections of this sort, it seems that fans of these individual series will enjoy the stories more than those going in cold, like myself. The writing styles and worlds vary fairly widely, and there is something that will likely appeal to an equally wide range of fantasy readers. However, most of the content fell a bit flat for me, largely because I had no previous attachment to the protagonists to fall back on. I am not sure I will seek out any of these authors in the future.

A fun set of stories of magic-infused heroines. I got this for the Ilona Andrews story, but enjoyed the others enough that it made me go back to Yasmine Galenorn's series after a long break, and I'm tempted to pick up the other authors' books as well!

I enjoyed this set of novellas. Ilona Andrew's is the first story with "Magic Dreams" where a shapeshifting tigress has to face some deeply dangerous issues. Though I kept wanting to tell her to get better glasses, or contacts. Seriously, I'm half blind without my glasses and I cope. Actually I'm a better shot without my glasses because I know how to cope.Ice Shards by Yasmine Galenorn is an interesting look at a Finnish House Sprite returning to her roots to find out what happened in the past, she has to come to terms with it to move on.Allyson James writes Double Hexed and makes me want to read the series it's around. A shapeshifting Dragon, a magic sink sherrif, a woman with power she can barely control, I'm intrigued. This story is about a spell that's on the hotel they work at, keeping them in, there's a vampire in the mix too and the spell keeping them in is bringing out the worst in them.Blood Debt resolves a story where Anna Strong went into a sanctury to kill an evil witch. I liked it and will have to hunt up more by Jeanne C Stein.Overall I have to say that I enjoyed the stories, nothing too stand out really but if I had to pick a favourite I'd say it was Ice Shards.

Four authors, four stories of curses foiled by magic wielding heroines and their companions. I'll be honest - I bought this for Ilona Andrews "Magic Dreams", which features shapeshifter Dali (the nearly blind white tiger) and the Pack's head of security, alpha, and all-around tough guy, Jim, facing off against a nasty, soul-sucking monster - not to mention a bevy of blackmarketeers. It doesn't disappoint, I only wish it had been longer! The remaining three stories are readable, but nothing special. All of them present action-packed episodes in the lives of what I'm assuming are established characters for their respective authors. I wasn't inspired to run out and find any of their full-length adventures.

I quite enjoyed 3 of the 4 stories, which is pretty par for the course for me with this type of anthology.Magic Dreams / Ilona Andrews - 4 starsThese authors are such otaku.Anyway, my fangirl self says: squee! I'm now a confirmed Jim/Dali 'shipper. More, please! My more analytical side noted more cultural/mythological info-dumping than I'm used to from IA. Also, if you haven't already read at least book 3 in the series (Magic Strikes), you're going to miss a lot of the characters' backstory.Still, squee!Ice Shards / Yasmine Galenorn - 1 starI had like a two page diatribe about why this story bugged me, but the short version: it's boring and clunky. "tears of sisterhood"? FFS.Double Hexed / Allyson James - 4 starsBrain candy. Mmm, candy. Features the normal cast of characters, this time with their impulses magically set on overdrive. You'll be fine with this even if you hadn't read any others in the series.Blood Debt / Jeanne C. Stein - 4 starsFor some reason, I just noticed that this series is told in first person present, which normally bugs the crap out of me, but I'm ok with it here. Anyway, this particular tale is kind of a supernatural take on a courtroom drama, so there's a bit less action than there normally is. It's also less melancholic than the first few books in the series (which I'm ok with. There's even some humor this time - the Angel reference made me giggle like a fool). It did feel a bit rushed in places, though, which I'll blame on the shorter form. This would be a fine introduction for those new to the world.

Magic Dreams by Ilona Andrews (Kate Daniels #4.5)In this one Dali and Jim fight together to bring down a Japanese demon. Dali is not a scary shifter, but she does know her magic. Jim is an alpha and they have always been at odds. That is you know they both like each other but never get together. So therefore I looked forward to reading this book knowing it would finally happen. Interesting mythology and in a way I did not feel like you had to have read the Kate Daniels series to understand the novella. Of course by having read them you would have met these two before and wanted the same thing I wanted. I enjoyed this novella.Ice Shards by Yasmine Galenorn (Sisters of the Moon #9.5)I never ever come across Finnish mythology and here I did. Iris Kuusi is a housesprite from Finland and she is going to the Northlands to find out if she killed someone 600 years ago. Ok I was a bit lost here at times, not really lost, but it was the fact that there have been 9 books in this series about three sisters. And this character who I guess is a minor character there. Also, they would not have had last names that far back and some names in it would not have been used. Still it was interesting in it's rich mythology. There seems to be a lot going on in that world (worlds).Double Hexed by Allyson James (Stormwalker #3.5)This one was my favourite because it really made me want to read the series behind it. Janet and her friends are trapped in her hotel because someone has put a hex on it. I found myself wanting to read more about Janet and her dragon lover Mick. Coyote was funny, the vampire seemed nice (when not crazed) and the rest of the cast interesting. It's a world I want to read about and book 1 made it to my wishlist.Blood Debt by Jeanne C. Stein (Anna Strong Chronicles #6.5)Yes 6 before this one but I never felt at loss. I got a bit of explanations what Anna was and what she had been through. In this book she stands trail for something she has done. And that made me know about her history. I would definitely be interested in reading her story from book 1. The writing and story was good and I do like kick-ass UF heroines. Conclusion:Interesting novellas that made me want to read more about the worlds presented. And as always some better than other.

Review courtesy of All Things Urban FantasyMagic Dreams by Ilona Andrews (Kate Daniels #4.5)A minor character in the Kate Daniels series, Dali proves more than ready for her own series in Magic Dreams. She couldn’t be more dissimilar from Kate, yet she displays the same strength of character and bravery that I’ve come to expect from the women in this series. She’s a tiny, visually impaired, Indonesian woman who shifts into a white Tiger. As a human, she’s about a physically imposing as a kitten and shifting to her tiger form isn’t easy for her. But she does know how to use magic, sometimes. And in Magic Dreams when her Alpha Jim, the man she secretly loves, shows up asking for help, she doesn’t hesitative even when she learns that she may have to sacrifice her life for Jim’s. Kate fans won’t want to miss this story and it’s a perfect introduction for new readers as it has one of the best and most concise explanations for the world building in this series. The dialogue is as sharp and clever as ever, the Japanese mythology borrowed for this story is integrated very well, and the romance between Dali and Jim subtly beautiful. By far the best story in HEXED.Sexual Content: Kissing Rating: 4/5Ice Shards by Yasmine Galenorn (Sisters of the Moon #9.5)My only exposure to Galenorn’s Sister’s of the Moon (SotM) series was in the anthology INKED, so I’ll admit near total ignorance when it comes to this world and these characters going in, and I feel pretty much the same way having read Ice Shards. The chronology jumps all over the place and the writing struck me as lazy and uninteresting. Lots and lots of characters and yet not one grabbed me. Iris travels with her friends (including SotM main character Camille and one of her husbands) to find out if she committed a crime she can’t remember. They travel, talk to people, travel, have flashbacks, travel etc. until the last 3 pages when Iris finally gets answers. I suppose fans of this series may enjoy all the cameos, but as a newbie, this story just turned me off the whole series.Sexual Content: References to sex Rating: 2/5Double Hexed by Allyson James (Stormwalker #3.5)Double Hexed is the longest story in HEXED (and I believe that’s Janet on the cover) and makes full use of its extra pages. Like the previous story, there are lots of characters (some stronger than others), but unlike the previous story, they each justify their inclusion in this specific story. Stormwalker Janet and her dragon shifter Mick are the leads and we learn about each character as they interact with them while trying to break a hex that has trapped them all in Janet’s hotel. This actually would be a great introduction for new readers who want to try this series featuring Native American mysticism mixed with more conventional paranormal tropes and a uniquely imagined world Beneath our own where demons and evil have been trapped. Janet and Mick have a heated romance and this story is the steamiest in the anthology.Sexual Content: References to homosexuality. A brief sex scene Rating: 3/5Blood Debt by Jeanne C. Stein (Anna Strong Chronicles #6.5)This is another series I’m largely unfamiliar with (I’ve only read the first book), but I didn’t have any trouble jumping in to this story. Anna and her bounty hunter partners are tracking a Skip when a series of events lead her to stand trail for her life. This setup provides Stein with an opportunity to highlight certain key events from Anna’s life (how she was turned into a vampire, how she ended up as a bounty hunter, and how she finally killed her nemesis etc). It works well has an intro for new readers, but doesn’t dominate the story so that fans become bored. There is a romantic relationship that gets set up in Blood Debt that I imagine will get woven into future books, so series devotees won’t want to miss seeing how it began.Sexual Content: A couple brief sex scenes Rating: 3/5

For me, historically, an anthology is one strong story, one reasonably good and the rest rather weak filler. I was highly pleased to find that HEXED happily underexceeded my historical expectations....each and every novella smoked!I was introduced to two new-to-me authors, in that I've heard of them, but not read as yet, Allyson James and Ilona Andrews. I have added their books to the WWBL because of their novellas in this book. Each one kept me up way past my bedtime so I could see what else was going to happen to the characters. Especially in Allyson James story, 'Double Hexed'. A multiple of supernatural characters working together to figure out who or what was keeping them trapped inside their hotel. I've read Yasmine Galenorn's Sisters of the Moon series in the past, but meandered away for some reason. I will be going back after reading 'Ice Shards'. I like how Yasmine draws other characters into the main story, not just the sisters. I've been fascinated with Iris' place in the household and her backstory is uniquely told. And I absolutely adore Anna Strong's story as written by Jeanne Stein. She's tough, family oriented, and trying to learn her place in the world as a vampire and as The Chosen. I am highly intrigued to read what is going to happen next since it looks like Anna might have a new love interest. YAY!Thank you, Jeanne Stein, for giving me this signed ARC to enjoy and have on the keeper shelf to dig into again. HEXED comes out 7 Jun. Go get this highly excellent anthology!!Five sparkly smokin' diamonds......
