I received this Advanced Reader Copy via Good Reads. This is based on the life of the author's grandmother. The trials and tribulations of a mere girl from Denmark traveling to Argentina as a wife then on to New York City. I really felt sorry for the girl. She was a giver and most of the people she lived with and encountered were takers. It is surprising that she could rise above it all and not be drawn down into the gutters. She is very naive, but a 14/15 year old is expected to be. Luckily she met people who gave her enough help to make sure that she was strong. This story makes you want to pull for Minke and hope that her husband, her sister, her husband's associates, all get their due. Soon you begin to pity Minke, but start seeing her inner strength come through. By the end of the book, you want it to go on, and see how Minke lives out the rest of her days.

Another 3 1/2. Loosley based on the life of the authors maternal Grandmother this is set in the early 1900's, starts out in Amsterdam, than Argentina and finally to the tenements in New York. Would have been a great read for woman's empowerment, this girl just never gave up.

I have to tell you about a book I just finished. It is called A Young Wife and it is by Pam Lewis. This book I actually started about a week ago I though this is good and I had to take my time and read it in small doses( thanks to life) and I mean really small doses. Then it happened I woke up one night could not sleep. I opened the book and read about twenty pages and could not put it down. I was on a boat traveling. Pam Lewis writes so well that I could totally picture this boat (she does not over describe) and the goings on and about the boat with the passengers. I wanted to read more but the early hour of the morning caught up with me and no matter how much I willed my eyes to stay open I could not make it happen. But my dreams that night were being on that boat with Minke and Sander. I awoke thinking wow what a great story teller Pam Lewis is. That day I even looked forward to a trip with my father in law to the doctor because after all that would allow me plenty of reading time in the waiting room and as luck would have it the doctor was on time and we literally were there 15 minutes (I was so bummed I had a date with this book and when is a doctor ever on time?). I was so sad because I knew my adventure would have to wait longer. This book had its hold on me because I thought of the very young Minke (teenager) leaving her parents to go and live with another family to take care of the dying wife of Sander. My heart broke for how scared she must have been leaving all that she knew but it was a different time ( the year was 1912) and a different place (the Netherlands) and talk of war was about. The weekend was finally here and I was excited to see that it was to be another over 100 degree couple of days; what better way but to spend it but inside out of the heat reading the adventure that poured from the pages of this book? I started reading the book on Friday I went to bed a sat there thinking I wonder what happens and finally at 2am I snuck out of my room as to not awake my husband and read until 4:30am when I could not hold my eyes open again. My heart was breaking for Minke having to have a baby and have no clue as to where it came from or how it would arrive. I was sad she was far from home my heart broke that she married Sander who was much older who asked here to marry him the day his wife had passed. He was an established man with money she was poor and her family wanted it for her. In the beginning of the book the author said that she based this book loosely on her grandmother’s life. I could not help but wonder just what parts was fact what parts were fiction. The doctor Minke traveled with and the one to deliver her babies he was such an odd person for his time and was a good person that offered a loyalty that is hard to come by. I wondered was this her grandma’s friend or just a character I really do not want to give away the story but I will say I was sad that the book ended. I have not had one of those books in a while. This book is full of new beginnings, friendships, enemies, deceptions and victories with a little mix of history. I give this book five stars

Great read - was wonderful how the author turned a family story into such a great and interesting novel.

I enjoyed this book. It was a quick read and a quick glance at what it was like in 1912. Some of the things people gave up and some of the greed that happened back then. We have different greed now. It broke my heart a little bit knowing this was based on a true story but yet glad for Minke in the end. I would recommend this book.

Thank you Goodreads for my advanced reader's copy! I would probably give this book a 3.5 if I could. I enjoyed each of the different narrative settings of the book, but they. felt disjointed to me, and this interfered with her character development. Overall, I think the episodes are well-written and the settings are original - I would have liked to spend more time with the characters in each place.

A Young Wife by Pam Lewis was a frustrating read. As a reader, I was always three steps ahead of the main character, Minke, and I desperately wanted her to figure things out. When she finally caught on, I was relieved, but it still took her awhile to get a backbone and take action. I also thought her choice in an ally (the doctor) was questionable when he had been her husband’s ally throughout their adventures and knew much of what had gone on. I can’t say more without giving away plot points, but suffice it to say, I was glad when the book was over and Minke finally had her life together. I will say that Minke ultimately proved to be a strong character, and I was pleased with the ending.

A Young wife, was a spendid read. I found myself captivated and pulled into the authors account of her grandmothers troubling journey through growing up and the theft in so many ways of her innocents. The story unfolds in the beginning of a young girl cousin to Sanders wife asked to come live with them to take care of said wife as she lays dying. Upon the womans death Minke, the young wife in said book is thrown into a whorlwind of life.Marrying, living, loving and finally being betrayed by family and people she loved with all her heart she has her first born child stolen and kept hidden from her. I found myself rooting for the girl as she finally grew a backbone and took care of herself. Found her stolen son and pulled her life together. Going back to the place her one life in Comodoro. It's a book that will make you laugh, cry , and cheer as this young woman braves her world and comes into her own. Standing up for the justice she deserves and sees the evil of man only to steal back her happiness and life before it's to late.

Phew! Finished this book just in time to get the review out on the release date! (Received an ARC to review)WOW! I never knew such an inventive story of great emotions could be crafted and based loosely on the life of a family member. Everyone's family tells of great stories that should be shared so that people can understand how their family got to where they are now and the places they originated from. Pam Lewis has crafted a vivid and wonderfully written novel in "A Young Wife" which follows the life of a young girl named Minke who becomes the "young wife" to a matured man—who could very well be old enough to be her father, after his previous wife passed. What follows is Minke's journey to new countries and learning to deal with being a young wife. Something so new to her, she has trouble getting the hang of things at first. This novel is a wonderful quick read with moments of suspense, tragedy, a little romance, scandals, deception, but most of all, moments of coming of age and learning how to deal for the main protagonist Minke. I recommend this book to people who enjoy reading a novel that takes place during the period of the early 1900's, or just someone wanting to read an excellent novel.

This was a pretty interesting book. It says it is loosely based on a true story, and I'm curious just how loose it is. A lot of bad stuff happened, and I'm interested in how much of it was real. The book tells the story of a 15 year old Dutch girl who marries an older man she hardly knows. She is then whisked away to Argentina. The city in Argentina is a new world on several levels. Minke has to adjust to her new married life and to an entirely new way of life in Argentina. Through a series of events, Minke ends up immigrating to the United States. There, even more new things await her.The action proceeds at a fairly quick pace. In fact, there is so much going on, I didn't ever really get a feel for the characters. I like to know what's going on in their heads, and you don't really get any of that in this book. I never really understood why Minke married her husband in the first place. However, that was a pretty minor problem for me. I got engrossed in the book. I found that I had read half of it in one sitting without realizing it. I didn't want to stop without finding out what happened next.Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I think it will serve people well who just want a quick, interesting read. If you really like to get into the characters' heads, you may not enjoy this book that much. It certainly kept my interest, and I felt compelled to keep reading until the end.Galley provided by publisher for review.

4 star book here. There was some heartwrenching parts, keep me on the edge of my seat parts, and then the could not go to bed until I knew how it all ended - part. I won this book and am very glad that I did, not knowing if this is a book that my library will purchase. The book itself has a lot of whirlwind action, all taking place within about three years. Minke is summoned to nurse a sick distant relative - who dies not long after. Within days she is married to her boss (the husband of the deceased) and heading off to Argentina. Minke is really quite naive in the beginning and left to be that way until she starts standing her ground. She has quite the head on her shoulders and comes into her own in a great way. Our Minke is not one to give up, even when her young son is stolen she does not give in. When she is betrayed and all seems to be lost - that is when she shines. Minke finds her focus and strives on. I like how she changes through the story, we know she is easy going but has a tough side and a stand up for what she believes is right - we see this when she smacks around the daughter of the house. Then we see how it saves her in the end when she raises herself and her children up out of the muck her husband made for them in America. On to the next!!

From the very start, this instantly became one of my favorite books. The main character, Minke, had so many obstacles to overcome at such a young age that it seemed an impossible feat, although somewhere in the back of my mind I knew she would emerge victorious. I don't want to give too much of the plot away and ruin a great read, but there were several times throughout the book in which I felt my heart breaking for poor Minke. However, I knew that all would be revealed once the time was right. Of course, I wasn't disappointed. Even though I did feel sympathy for Minke, at the end I believe that her struggles made her a much stronger person in the long run. The author was correct when she said " 'A Young Wife' is a journey no reader will soon forget."
