About this audiobook
From a contributing editor for Vogue, a pitch-perfect, funny, and poignant novel about the joy and heartache of how deeply one person's life can affect so many others.
With wit and warmth, And Sometimes Why captures the fragile rhythm and unpredictable drama of family life. When Sophia and Darius say good-bye to their teenage daughters one unremarkable morning. they have no idea how permanently their family will be affected by a decision made around the breakfast table. One of the daughters will have a terrible accident; the other will meet a boy. Both events will change their lives forever. Profoundly honest and rendered with a deft lightness of touch, And Sometimes Why is a novel about how quickly life can change and how we must learn to change with it.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This is basically the story of a teenaged girl who is involved in a road accident, ends up in a coma, and then the family and other assorted characters are left to muddle through with the uncertainties associated with such a tragedy. I liked the variety of characters and the varied storylines & points of view of those surrounding "the accident", but the problem was that the book as a whole was too disjointed. Some of the characters were quite interesting, but they really had nothing to do with the overall plot of the story. Why were they written in & what was their purpose? So much of this story had an "unfinished" feel to it, including the ending, which was very abrupt & open-ended, and once again, didn't really "flow" well. Though this novel had lots of potential, it ultimately missed the mark for me. What sort of saved it, in this particular case where I read the audiobook version, was that the reader (Cassandra Campbell) was very capable & that added somewhat to the enjoyment factor.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5And Sometimes Why is a gripping tale of what happens to a family after a tragic accident puts their lives into a state of suspended animation. Watching this family fall apart reminded me in many ways of Jacqueline Michard’s The Deep End of the Ocean because in both cases, the parents are left to deal with a child who is not dead, but is in every other way gone. Each family member comes to terms with the tragedy differently and in their own time. The grieving parents’ relationship is torn apart as they disagree over their daughter’s care. The distraught sister is the one who asks the hard questions and is the most realistic. She moves from the family home in California to Alaska with her boyfriend. One day on a walk she encounters a fox in a trap, still alive but suffering. She decides to put it out of it’s misery with her own hands. Afterwards.. “Each time she glanced down at the body.. she felt her horror fade a tiny bit. A body without life was an empty container. Nothing to be afraid of. Nothing to weep over.”Ms. Johnson has done a great job of making her characters believable. They seem so real to me. It is a heartbreaking and compelling story, and so well written that it’s hard to believe it’s a first novel.A book club would find much to discuss from And Sometimes Why. The ending is open ended and I find myself wondering what the characters would do next. This is a remarkable book and one I would highly recommend.
