About this audiobook

In this harrowing medical thriller filled with suspense and brilliantly crafted twists, Tess Gerritsen—the author of the acclaimed Rizzoli & Isles series that inspired the hit television show—delivers a pulse-pounding tale that “will make your heart skip a beat” (USA TODAY).

For Dr. Abby DiMatteo, the long road to Boston’s Bayside Hospital has been anything but easy. Now, immersed in the grinding fatigue of her second year as a surgical resident, she’s elated when the hospital’s elite cardiac transplant team taps her as a potential recruit.

But Abby soon makes an anguished, crucial decision that jeopardizes her entire career. A car crash victim’s healthy heart is ready to be harvested; it is immediately cross-matched to a wealthy private patient, Nina Voss. Abby hatches a bold plan to make sure that the transplant goes instead to a dying seventeen-year-old boy who is also a perfect match.

The repercussions are powerful and swift and Abby is shaken but unrepentant—until she meets the frail, tormented Nina. Then a new heart for Nina Voss suddenly appears, her transplant is completed, and Abby makes a terrible discovery: Nina’s heart has not come through the proper channels.

Defying Bayside Hospital’s demands for silence, Abby plunges into an investigation that reveals an intricate, and murderous, chain of deceptions. Every move Abby makes spawns a vicious backlash and, in a ship anchored in the stagnant waters of Boston Harbor, a final, grisly discovery lies waiting…

I have enjoyed your books for many years. Unfortunately, the last two books encompassed political innuendo. Reading and listening to good mysteries was a delight. I worked with state government forty years. The last thing I want to hear is party bashing on my own time. Plus I will not pay to read or listen to it.

Harvest is Gerritsen's first medical thriller. It is a wonderfully fast-paced read. The reader is not overwhelmed by all of the medical termininology as it is explained in the dialogue and doesn't dominate the story. The female protagonist's tension grows throughout the story and as a a reader I was drawn into her plight. Organ harvests, medical malpractice, organized crime, and interpersonal conflicts make for a fun read.

    Excellent read..
Interesting storyline with well developed characters. The narrator is excellent, and really adds to the appeal of this audiobook.
Having already read this book in print some time ago, I was afraid it might not keep my interest in audiobook format, but I wasn't disappointed.

As with other books of Tess Gerritsen, this one had an amazing storyline. At times it was hard to put down, while a few other it was a little slow. It had an unpredictable twist and by the end wanted to find out what happens next in Abby's life!

A page turner that is not for the squeamish as there are a number of medical procedures described in some detail.

very intriguing. Got a little dull towards the end and some of the mid point conspiracy was a bit far-fetched. Very good read though

Wow. I admit to skimming through the detailed descriptions of the medical procedures, but so what? They're not my thing. The rest of this book, however, is AMAZING. Very suspenseful, full of emotion and twists and NOOO!! kind of moments. I could not put it down. I suspect that, on top of my catching up with her R&I books, I will be checking out everything Tess Gerritsen has written.

Ms. Gerritsen does it again, with one of her earlier books. Harvest is a unique look into the black market world of organ sales - human organs for transplants. At Bayside hopsital in Boston, there is a highly successful transplant team, who seemingly is able to find donor matches with ease, only for a price. Dr. Abby DiMatteo stumles inot this dark world when she is invited to join the transplant team, only to find things arent working as they should. Soon she finds herself on the run, discredited, and wondering what happened to other members of the "team" at Bayside. Can she find out the entire truth and bring things to light before she ends up Harvested herself?

Abby DiMatteo is a top-notch second-year resident at Bayside Hospital in Boston. Dr. Wettig, the supervisor of the residency program, is known to be a hard-nose who never compliments any of the residents, but he shows a lot of respect for Abby. In addition to the respect she is receiving from her supervisor, the organ transplant team is also showing interest in Abby. They want her to be a part of their team when she finishes her residency.Abby is ecstatic about the attention she is receiving from the transplant team, and even more excited when her boyfriend Mark, who is also on the transplant team, asks her to marry him. But all the wonderfulness starts to fade after Abby helps a teenage boy get the heart transplant that is rightfully his over a 40-year-old woman who's husband is wealthy and wants to "pay" for the heart. The teenage boy is saved but the cost may be Abby's life.I'll just start this review by saying Tess Gerritesen knows how to write a thriller! Even though she writes the story so that the reader can make connections early on, the approach doesn't deter from the anticipation or excitement at all. It is kind of like watching a scary movie where someone enters a dark room with eerie music playing. You KNOW something is going to jump out at the person, but you still jump out of your seat when it happens. That is what this book easily compares to.The concept of buying and selling organs in this book is nothing short of terrifying. Gerritsen writes in such a way as to evoke a tremendous amount of emotion from the reader: fear, horror, anger, mortification. Gerritsen also has a gift when it comes to characterization. I absolutely fell in love with Yakov, a young Russian orphan who was so smart and had so much curiosity. He yearned for companionship, looking for it where ever he could find it. And Abby is another great female character. She is faced with multiple lawsuits that the wealthy husband is arranging with all his money. She is a resident; she has no money to even begin to try to fight them, but she feels that she must do something. I found myself identifying with her frustration over the fact that money is the controlling factor, not what is RIGHT. Abby isn't a superwoman, she doesn't have the super powers to trump the evils of money. And sadly, everything doesn't turn out happily ever after. But it turns out believable, which in the end makes the book that much more frightening.I listened to this book on audio. This was a Recorded Books version, read by George Guidall. One of the elements of Guidall's reading that stood out for me was how his pace increased with action that was taking place in the plot. I find myself doing that when I read myself, so I appreciated his tendency to do the same thing. While I enjoy Guidall's readings and I think he did a very nice job on this book, I also think his sound is a little too old for the characters that this book centered on. And I'm also a little curious why they chose a male reader over a female reader for this particular book. But, as with In Big Trouble, these factors aren't enough for me not to highly recommend it. I had a great experience listening to this audiobook.

I felt this story just didn't hang together (SPOILER ALERT....)If Victor's wife was 3rd on the AB blood type transplant list and the two above her on the list died (as was clearly stated) then surely the teenage boy who actually recieved the heart must have been lower down on the list. He must have been in the same blood group otherwise they wouldn't have been fighting over it in the first place, but this is never mentioned. And if he was then they had a medical and very defined reason why it should have gone to her. Of course it wouldn't have made much of a story then...

This is an edge of your seat medical thriller about a second year resident who uncovers a conspiracy of murder, betrayal, and danger, surrounding the illegal harvesting of organs. From page one, I was along for the ride and could hardly put the book down. Tess Gerritsen wrote an intense story and created characters most everyone will love, including Abby, Yakov and Katzka.
