About this audiobook

In Dana Stabenow's strongest novel to date, Aleutian P.I. Kate Shugak is hired by Charlotte Mauravieff to clear her mother's name. Twenty years ago, her mother was convicted of setting fire to the family home and killing one of her two sons, both inside the house at the time. Though the mother herself had accepted the life sentence without protest, Charlotte has always believed in her innocence. But when Kate begins the investigation, she soon discovers that the terminally ill mother isn't the only one refusing to cooperate and confront the past. To find the truth Kate must unearth twenty years of secrets, regret, and murder in one of Alaska's most powerful families.

"Shugak is one of the great characters of modern crime fiction."-Laurie R. King, author of Keeping Watch

A Taint in the Blood: A Kate Shugak Novel (Kate Shugak Novels)A Taint in the Blood: A Kate Shugak Novel (Kate Shugak Novels)by Dana StabenowEdition: Mass Market PaperbackPrice: $7.99111 used & new from $0.014.0 out of 5 stars Complex Mystery and a Sort Of Relationship With Jim - Can't Ask For More, June 30, 2015Edit ReviewDelete ReviewVerified Purchase(What's this?)This review is from: A Taint in the Blood: A Kate Shugak Novel (Kate Shugak Novels) (Mass Market Paperback)This is my umpteenth re-reading of this series and I still come away amazed at how this author can write a mystery. I love how the author can take Kate (us really!) out of the park and plop Kate in the city and have it be a smooth transaction this time. For those of us that have already read to the last book published, we have seen how Kate has grown, has become a bit of a player and has learned to use her strengths and not always her brute strength and Mutts snapping teeth! Although in this book Mutt does get to take a chunk out of someone and that is always fun for the fans.Kates relationship, (for lack of a better word), with Jim seems to be turning a corner in this book and I like it. Jim doesn't but I do!The mystery in this book was complex and really had me guessing...my jaw still drops in astonishment every time I read this book.If I had one complaint it is that this book had so many side characters that I almost needed a score card. This book lacked a lot of the history we are used to but then again, it lacked a lot of the 'preaching' that the author is famous for and I for one was a little happy about that.

This, the 14th installment in the series, is set in and around Anchorage. Kate's hired to search a 30 year old murder. As always, the book's about Alaska; but, in this case, it's more about Kate. Her relationship with Chopper Jim evolves and becomes quite sexy--one wonders where Stabenow gets this stuff. Also, Mutt plays a big supporting role, almost human. Oh, and there is a plot too. Happily, I move on to #15.

I love stories that paint a picture of a place and its people. The Kate Shugak mysteries do that for Alaska.

Kate's feeling guilty about accepting the Park rats' gift of a new house. But a new case and a good talking to puts things into perspective. Charlotte Muravieff is old money, Alaskan blueblood on both sides, and she has a problem: her mother's dying of cancer, and before she does Charlotte wants her out of jail. In order to get the three decade old case cleared, she wants Kate to do some poking around. Kate's poking has, as usual, a damaging effect on local politics.Lots of rolling around with Chopper Jim and a out-of-the-Park locale make for a change. Go, Kate!

What a treat to get to read another Kate Shugak mystery. I love these stories. They are a perfect example of why I like serial mysteries. The character development allowed is so wonderful! This story revolves around Kate's being hired to re-investigate a 30 year old murder case. I won't go into the mystery at all because I hate spoilers but I will say that -- unlike most of Stabenow's mysteries -- I figured out who the "real killer" was when the storyline was introduced. Oh well -- still, it was a great and painful journey to get there. Kate evolved a lot in this story too. As did her relationship with Chopper Jim. I eagerly await the next book in the series!
