About this audiobook
The seven dragon tribes have been at war for generations, locked in an endless battle over an ancient, lost treasure. A secret movement called the Talons of Peace is determined to bring an end to the fighting, with the help of a prophecy -- a foretelling that calls for great sacrifice.
Five dragonets are collected to fulfill the prophecy, raised in a hidden cave and enlisted, against their will, to end the terrible war.
But not every dragonet wants a destiny. And when the select five escape their underground captors to look for their original homes, what has been unleashed on the dragon world may be far more than the revolutionary planners intended . . .
Tui T. Sutherland
Tui T. Sutherland & Kari Sutherland are sisters and best friends, and if you can’t tell by looking at them which one is older, Tui certainly isn’t going to tell you. They grew up in South America, traveling a lot and moving several times (and they’re still only about 80 percent certain that their parents weren’t secret agents). Kari now lives in California, while Tui lives in Boston, but they use every excuse they can to see each other (like, say, writing a book together).

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Good for a young readers book. I’m reading it because my tween daughters are into it. Surprisingly cut-throat and violent at times for a book about kid dragons.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This story takes place on Pyrrhia, where dragons rule the world. Interestingly enough, there are "scavengers" which turn out to be humans, but to dragons, they're just food. It is interesting to read about how the dragons interact with the scavengers, and vice versa.
The story centers around the "dragonets of prophecy", which really turn out just be children, or perhaps young adults. They start meddling in dragon clan politics, kind of figuring out who they are and what their destiny is. It can be a bit unrealistic at times on how youth solve problems and interact with their elders, but it's a fantasy fiction, so you take the punches as they come.
The world is thought out well, including the different dragon clans (Mudwings, Seawings, etc.), and how each dragon is created. In my opinion, these dragons are all around more "complete" and "realistic" than the How To Train Your Dragon books. Although, I do thing I would have changed some of the dragon attributes to make things just a bit more unique and satisfying (why all of them have forked tongues?).
Aside from doing a good job with character and world building, Tui does a great job keeping the plot place progressing evenly and unpredictable. This is what makes a story fun to read, when you can't figure out what's going to happen next, and you're always engaged with the characters as the plot unfolds. There really isn't any part of the book that is a bore to read.
I would like to see more distinct character traits in the different dragonets. Sure, we have the book worm, and the practical go getter, but I would like to see them exaggerated a bit. Perhaps a dragonet is consistently sarcastic, while another is consistently droll and serious. You could have a dragonet that is the trouble maker, and one that is the grump. Seeing as though this series is targeted towards younger readers, I think kids would like to see more of these stereotypes play out. As it sits, a lot of the personalities are very "not exciting". Not that they fall flat, but they don't really jump out on the page either.
Regardless, this is a great read, and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the series.7 people found this helpful

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Amazing book, would definitely recommend it to kids 10+. At first it can seem a challenge to start reading a series with 13 books in it, but as you start you just cant stop. Book is very descriptive and I love how Tui t Sutherland inculded a list of the dragons of phyrriha and their abilities.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A group of rebel dragons who call themselves the Talons of Peace are trying to make a prophecy come true in the hopes that it will put an end to the current war between dragons. To do this, they gather five dragon eggs and hide them underground. One of the dragonets, Glory, was not part of the prophecy, but instead a last minute replacement when the other dragon egg was crushed by one of the dragon Queens. They are each a different species of dragon and become very close while growing up together in the caves. When Glory’s life is threatened, the dragonets decide to leave their “prison” and take their chances in the warring world. This fantasy story shows the importance of friendship, determination in the face of adversity, and the senselessness of war. It also has some strong undertones of racism and stereotyping that the dragonets do not “see” as they get to know and appreciate each other.Illustrations at the front of the book show the eight different species of dragon that are mentioned in the story, along with descriptions of their unique abilities and alliances in the war.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Five young dragonets find themselves destined to fulfill a prophecy that will end the war between the dragons. Six years ago, the underground group Talons of Peace, determined to make the end of the war a reality, stole, bought and borrowed five eggs and began raising the young dragons in secret. Gentle-hearted Clay, the MudWing; sassy Tsunami, the SeaWing; bookish Starflight, the NightWing; loyal Sunny, the SandWing; and shy Glory, the RainWing, are the Dragonets of Destiny. After six long years in seclusion with only their history lessons and combat training for occupation and their harried minders for company, the five young dragons yearn to see what life is like beyond the thick stone walls of their cave. Escaping their prison is only a vague fantasy until the original prophet arrives and threatens the life of one of the dragonets. The five flee, only to be captured almost immediately by a ruthless dragon queen. Fast-paced and detailed, this first installment in a new adventure series is entertaining if not terribly original. Adult dragons are all cast as untrustworthy, cruel and selfish; only the young dragonets seem to have any depth and complexity. While expected, violent battle scenes seem at odds with the story of peace and quest for home. Nevertheless, this first outing has all of the key ingredients for a successful formula-fantasy series: hierarchical social structure, destiny, attributive names and a map. Exciting, but not outstanding
