      Ugh. Schmaltzy. Love Kristen Hannah’s other books. Don’t bother with this one.

      Honestly, I’m being generous. Not sure what all the hype was about. The book was really slow to start, it was like a mediocre YA novel for the first half. I almost gave up so many times but then thought “things have to get more interesting”… they did, but not enough to give anything more than 3 stars. Narration was ok but Mia’s voice - OMG she sounds like a 6-year old…

      Such a disappointment from Kristen Hannah. I’ve thoroughly been captivated by all other novels I’ve read, but Night Road was nauseatingly predictable from the very beginning.

      Definitely in the vein of Jodi Picoult, but a better framing; instead of choosing to "resolve" an impossible situation by twisting the plot, as Picoult has, Hannah chooses to paint a portrait of what tragedy can do to a family. Not normally the type of book I'd choose to read, but if you like this sort of thing it's fairly well done.

      Mia's character was underdeveloped and not really a believable 18 year old, more like a 7 year old mentality... it made it difficult to become invested in her which made the story fall flat for me. I also feel like the romance with Zach is underdeveloped, just not a great book from a usually pretty great author.

      The story is predictable and the main character got to be frustrating. I went in with high hopes as I loved The Nightingale.

      The writing and description was very vivid, however it was not my cup of tea.

      The first part of the book spent ages warming up and could have been concluded sooner, the second part of the book was just rife with description and not very much really happened.

      All in all, boring, boring, boring.

      She's died it again. Kristen Hannah mines the truth about grief and loss and love .... "love is sometimes an act of will ".... this truth has saved me in the eight years since I lost my daughter and 18 months since love lost a son too Reading this was cathartic and heartbreaking and mostly affirming that thing you think you can't live through, you can and you can find joy in walking through the pain of it all. This is a lovely gift to those who greave.

      If you like dramas around each corner, then for you it's a must read. Prepare to tackle deaths, hatred, abandonement, resentment déep love and forgiveness. With a turmoil of emotions, this story will keep your eyes sad and watery throughout.

      I am UNDONE! Kristin Hannah has a way of doing that to her readers. She is a master at character development. And, no matter how disturbing a person’s behavior, she causes you to understand their frailty and, thus, to pull for their humanity. A mother’s love is complex and, inevitably, tied to her own childhood. This book accentuates the highs and lows that come with parenting. Tragedy does that. No one puts in written form better than Kristin Hannah.
