      I picked this up while at my job (I work as a shelver at a library) and casually flipped through it. I ended up reading the whole thing in one shift on breaks and lunch. Fast read for sure. It was an interesting idea but I didn't like any of the characters. Anna was weak and her daughter was a straight up bitch. I thought "the boy" would play a bigger role. I was disappointed but overall the book was ok.

      Reading this one was a little strange for me. The setting and subject matter are eerily similar to my own novel, Sabrina's Window, about a boy and a woman, set in Taos, New Mexico. Beyond that, however, the two story lines are very different. I thoroughly enjoyed Lara Santoro's deeply felt and painfully realistic portrayal of her entire band of characters.

      I won this in a First Reads Giveaway.I loved this book so much, every part of it. I was hooked in from the very first page and didn't couldn't put it down until after I had finished it; after I sat stunned for some time by the ending. Even if you've read similar plots, I'd still suggest picking up this book. It's written so beautifully. It's practically poetic in starkly highlighting the deep, dark reality too many people experience, and too few admit. It's not a pleasant or happy story. It's a haunting tale about taking the wrong turn. I enjoyed reading book because it hits hard, and pulls no punches. The characters in this book are all realistic tragically flawed humans. They withdraw a reaction, and their story is emotionally impacting. I'm going to read the author's other book, Mercy for sure and be on the look out for more books by her. I love her voice, and her style.

      The Boy is a brutally honest story about a woman’s mistakes and corrupt choices and the heart wrenching consequences that they cause. Anna moves halfway across the world to a small town in New Mexico with her daughter to escape and start a new life after a bitter divorce. Unfortunately, the mistakes and choices she makes put her on a downward spiral starting with an affair with a boy that is half her age and ending in tragedy. This story was not at all what I thought it would be about after seeing the title and reading the blurb on the back. Yes, there is a boy in the story that Anna has a sensuous and obsessive affair with, but it is in no way the main plot line. Their relationship doesn't begin until close to hallway through the story and as a reader you never get any insight into their relationship and why they are together or what feelings they have for each other except lust.Anna is unlikable, erratic, and confusing. One minute she is joyfully playing with her daughter at the river and the next she is screaming at her to go to her room and mind her own business. Anna wants to be a good mother, but she is incapable because of her unpredictable moods, selfish choices, and drug abuse. It showcases the sacrifices motherhood requires and how some women no matter how heart-wrenching it is, can’t make those sacrifices. I wasn't able to set this book down and read in about 4 hours. I kept waiting for something to happen and when it finally did, it broke my heart. I am giving this book 3.5 stars because even though I didn't like and couldn't relate to the plot, this story will be with me for weeks to come. It is beautifully written, hauntingly thought provoking, and not for the faint of heart.
