About this audiobook

Gone Girl meets The Perks of Being a Wallflower in this critically-acclaimed novel about resilience, forgiveness, love, and second chances.

I live in a world without magic or miracles. A place where there are no clairvoyants or shapeshifters, no angels or superhuman boys to save you. A place where people die and music disintegrates and things suck. I am pressed so hard against the earth by the weight of reality that some days I wonder how I am still able to lift my feet to walk.

Two and a half years after an unspeakable tragedy left her a shadow of the girl she once was, Nastya Kashnikov moves to a new town determined to keep her dark past hidden and hold everyone at a distance. But her plans only last so long before she finds herself inexplicably drawn to the one person as isolated as herself: Josh Bennett.

Josh’s story is no secret. Every person he loves has been taken from his life until, at seventeen years old, there is no one left. When your name is synonymous with death, everyone tends to give you your space. Everyone except Nastya who won’t go away until she’s insinuated herself into every aspect of his life. But as the undeniable pull between them intensifies, he starts to wonder if he will ever learn the secrets she’s been hiding—or if he even wants to.

The Sea of Tranquility is a rich, intense, and brilliantly imagined story about a lonely boy, an emotionally fragile girl, and the miracle of second chances.

Book Nook — Young Adult book reviewsThis book left me in a complete daze. I almost don't know how to start this review, because how do you possibly put something like this into words? The Sea of Tranquility has so much emotion, devastation, power, helplessness, and an odd sense of hope. The first half of this book was absolutely hilarious. Maybe that's wrong of me to say, given the nature of this story, but I can't help it. The characters are AMAZING! Their inner dialogue had me totally cracking up. They're both witty, sarcastic, and absolutely hilarious—but without trying to be. This book totally lifted my spirits! ..which is almost odd because it's about a somewhat depressed girl with a horrible, traumatizing past that changed her future. The second half of the book will completely rip your heart out, but at first I was pleasantly surprised by how funny it was!The only three things that I know for certain took place last night are that one, small elves climbed up my body and tied my hair into a mass of tiny knots; two, I must have slept with my mouth open because something crawled into it and died; and three, I was sucked through a vortex into some animated world where an anvil was dropped on my head.—The Sea of Tranquility To be honest, not much actually happens in the first half in terms of intense events. It's really slow building. We watch Nastya and Josh go about their daily lives, sometimes encountering each other, and sometimes not. It's very much an introduction into their psyches. That being said, it wasn't boring. I was devouring every word. Their lives are different enough from "normal" that they're interesting to read about."How come you call her honey and never use terms of endearment on me?" he fake whines."I do," Mrs. Leighton says, patting him on the cheek as she walks by. "Just last week I called you the bane of my existence."—The Sea of Tranquility And on top of that, we have a mystery element. At first we don't know exactly what happened to Nastya or what happened to Josh. They struggle to learn about each other, and we struggle to learn about them. The slow, and almost taunting way in which this information is presented will have you desperately clawing for more!I'm going to kill the boy who killed me.—The Sea of Tranquility Nastya and Josh are both trying (or not trying) to overcome the horrors in their pasts, and that's what slowly draws them together. Both their relationship, and the inevitable romance, slowly (and sweetly) build as the story progresses! The romance was about two people who complete each other—but not in that cheesy "we're soul mates" and "love at first sight" kind of way. Nastya and Josh struggle, grow, and attempt to cope, but they help each other do it (sometimes without even realizing). It almost starts off not as a romance at all, but as some sort of quirky friendship where two people seek shelter with the other. But the sweetness and loveable moments grew and grew until soon enough, I was in love with the characters as much as they were in love with each other! He's given me a place to belong.—Nastya, The Sea of Tranquility The second half of the book was less hilarious and more about the characters finally acknowledging that problems exist. The first half, Nastya was running away from her problems and Josh was hiding from his. But slowly those problems find their way to the surface and explode. There's no more running, no more hiding. They have to face them. It's totally and completely heart wrenching! I sobbed and sobbed and sobbed, like a lost little girl.Sometimes I just forget how to breathe.—Nastya, The Sea of Tranquility I feel like I'm an emotional mess. It's been a long time since I was this invested in characters in a book. I want to cry and scream and laugh all at the same time. And for the first time, I felt like I actually completely understood Nastya. In most books when someone has emotional problems, I sympathize with them on some shallow level. But when they act out or run or hide, I want to scream at them and bash their head against the wall and tell them to grow up. Not in The Sea of Tranquility. Katja did such an amazing job of pulling me into Nastya's life, that I wanted to run right along side her. I wanted to hide and scream and ignore the outside world.I expect her in my life. And it's terrifying.—Josh, The Sea of Tranquility Words can barely do this book justice. It's so intense and powerful that you really need to read it for yourself to even begin to understand! I almost feel numb from reading it. Did I really survive that intense reading experience? Staying up late to devour every word, then waking up to pick up where I left off and clinging onto my pillow as I sobbed uncontrollably? That's what this book will do to you.

He's messed up. She's messed up. I have never enjoyed reading a romance in so long, and I have never rooted so hard for two people to be together. The pace was alright with me, and yes it was cheesy at times, but it was a good cheesy, you know?

Millay managed to make their emotions palpable, and I know I've complained about angst, but at this time, when I read The Sea of Tranquility, I loved the angst. I loved how effed up all the characters are. I tore at my hair, rolled my eyes, screamed, laughed, cried. It was an awesome emotional roller coaster ride.

I was torn between giving this 4 or 5 stars, because I know it isn't perfect, but what the heck, I haven't enjoyed reading a romance in such a long time.

*5 stars. This was a welcome and surprisingly pleasant break from a string of "okay" books. A classic case of "the right book at the right time."

EDIT: I just saw that this was originally self-published. Well, that explains a lot. Seriously, couldn't an editor have looked this over after it had been acquired by the publisher? Or did they actually? If so, they might need to consider putting more effort into what they're doing.

Sweet and heartbreaking and hopeful. It is about loss and gealing and second chances. It is about choosing to be happy, about closure and accepting the things you can't change. It is about moving on and finding the place the people where you belong. That things aren't perfect and that there is a long way to go, but sometimes deciding to try to be okay is good enough and the rest will come later. When bad things happen, you have a right to be upset, to be angry, but you can choose to be happy instead and that is okay and does mean that the bad thing is alright or forgiven.

This book was so so so good! I read it in spurts at bedtime for a few nights, and each time my eyes got heavy and I started taking loooong blinks, I dreaded putting it down. When I got to come back to it again the next night, I fell right back into the ebb and flow and the feeling of coming home to beloved friends again. The writing was transportive. It subtly drew me in, and by the 2nd paragraph, I was hooked!! I already needed to know who these people were? Why were they so jaded? What were the big, life defining catalysts for their changes? Will their pain violently pull them into each other's gravitational orbit? Will it be the core reason for their repulsion?I LOVED these characters!! I hate what they endured, but I helplessly fell head over heels in love with (almost) each and every one of them. Our 2 MCs were perfectly written. Our MMC, Josh, was angsty, hot, and prickly. He had a big forcefield surrounding him with a buzzing sign saying, "Stay back, I bite." He was like a spiky marshmallow... all sharp jagged edges on the outside, and when you break through the pokey bits, there's a sweet, soft yet springily resilient, romantic guy in there. The secondary characters (and even Clay, a tertiary character) were all so beautifully morally gray (as all good characters should be), and relateable and endearing and extremely easy to adore. Drew turned out to be one of my favorites and SUCH a great addition to our two MC's chaotic dynamic. The slow tease reveal of what the impetus of our FMC's destruction was was drawn out to perfection, and it was later unveiled in the best possible way, imho. This book made me feeeeeel and cry and smile but mostly cry. I cried big ugly, empathetic tears and silent sobs of commiseration for all of my own broken parts and the things that broke me before I found the strength to fight back to where I am now. I didn't want it to end... ever! I wanted to know about these characters and their lives forever. I could have easily subscribed to watching their daily lives unfold like General Hospital airing each day (for decades) for we addicts. I cherished this read so much that I wish I was starting it again for the first time.Overall:I want moooooore... so much more... I want to know every detail of these yummily gray, oft times dark and gritty, character's lives!! This book took my emotions and flung them about like a toddler throwing a tantrum but I loved every second of it and desperately want more! AND that ending!!! I was dreading the arrival of the very last sentence, and when it came, it blew me away! It fit the story's mood/timbre/aesthetic perfectly, and I doubt that I've ever used the word (or a variation of the word) "Perfect " so many times in one review. And I doubt that the word "Perfect" has ever had so many imperfect parts making up its sum total perfect label. Knowing that little factoid, I bet you know where this book ended up... yup, it is lovingly nestled among the rest of my most cherished tales in the ever elusive Favorites pile.To call what I'm experiencing a Book Hangover is an understatement. I wish the book I was about to open now, before bed, was Sea of Tranquility BUT it's not and for that I'm sad. Even days later, my heart still hurts (in a good way??). I highly recommend this read!~ Enjoy

Character-driven contemporary fiction with dual narrators about two teens dealing with trauma. Nastya is escaping her past by transferring to a new high school in a small town in Florida. Formerly a talented pianist, a brutal attack has left her unable to play. She is facing the loss of her primary identity as a musician and has wrapped herself in silence. At school she meets Josh, who is living alone after deaths in his family. He tends to keep his distance from others. The two withdrawn characters are attracted to each other. A mutual friend, Drew, also plays a pivotal role in this drama. Although it features teens as protagonists, the dark subject matter (plus sexual promiscuity, underage drinking, drugs, and violence) skews more toward adult than young adult.

I have mixed feelings about this book. On the plus side, I found the three main characters well-developed and complex. I enjoyed seeing teens acting like teens, with their typical sarcasm, banter, and wit. For a book with heavy subject matter, I think the author does a good job of inserting bits of humor here and there, which is both necessary and well done. I felt compassion for Nastya and Josh.

On the minus side, this book has an extremely long build-up phase, and the pacing in general is uneven. The word “glacial” comes to mind, at least for the beginning. The author’s puppet strings were too often visible. It seems like trickery to keep the reader in the dark for so long regarding Nastya’s “big secret” when she’s one of the narrators and she knows what happened. There were too many contrivances, plot devices, and coincidences for my taste. Characters and objects were introduced to serve a plot point and then forgotten. The “romantic interest as savior” theme cannot be ignored, even though the narrative denies it repeatedly. Just saying something doesn’t make it so. Several events toward the end veer toward melodrama and I wish there had been more consequences for violent actions.

Overall, my feelings about this book are ambivalent. Based on the numerous glowing reviews, I expected more.

This book sat on my wish list for about a year before I decided to actually read it. Not gonna lie, I did not realize it was YA before it was in my hands. It made it to my reading list because it has more than 75k ratings with a score of 4.3. I figured so many people can't be wrong, So I will read it and was not disappointed. Far from it! For a first novel, it is amazingly good. I laughed and I cried, with sadness and with joy. Heart-wrenching, but a solid positive up-lifting story. Young adults will love it even more than I did - can you give 6 stars?

This book was absolutely beautiful. It wasn't just a pretty story; it wasn't very pretty at all. But the writing was lovely, and the voices of the teenagers were wonderful: snarky, honest, pained. I have so much to say, but I need to process.

    Loved it!!!!

After two disappointing reads this was like a breath of fresh air, but don't misunderstand: this story earned five stars all by itself!

The author did an amazing job in developing Nastya and Josh relationship: no improbable and out of nowhere love at first sight for them, oooh no, but a slow and thoughtful progress from mutual interest to love...I really dig this!
Also her characters are really well wrote and amazingly real and I'm not just referring to the main ones, even those that should have been in the background really stood out (Drew and Clay for example!).

    I wholly recommend this!

    2. 2/2 is 100%

    So uh.

I didn't remember that Nastya like hated all the other teen girls. And you know what, I guess...I can't really remember if that changes? But I don't like 'other women are mine enemy' type stuff, and in a YA book, yeesh. And so much. Sisterhood needs to start young y'all. And knowing her past...I...

    I'm done.

3.5 for a YA book. I was impressed with the author's vocabulary - for teens or anyone. The mystery of the two main characters unfolds a bit slowly. However, the ending was fitting. Good for teens that enjoy reading - not so much for reluctant readers.

I read this on a whim. Everywhere I turned I saw The Sea of Tranquility being featured, although I was a tad hesitant picking The Sea of Tranquility up because so many people had nothing but great things to say about the novel. More often than not I find that I am the exception and that's never very fun. However, since this was a read now on Netgalley I felt like I had very little to lose.

It didn't take me very long to lose myself in this story. The two narrators, Nastya Kashnikov and Josh Bennett, despite their extreme loads of baggage are easy to relate to and feel for. Well, I guess as long as you've "ever felt alone in a crowded room." (Jack's Mannequin's song "Dark Blue" kept playing through my head as I read The Sea of Tranquility.) Almost right off the bat I felt invested in their stories and wanted so badly for things to work out and for stars to align so that they could find happiness. Of course, they had a nasty habit of ruining things for themselves again and again which frustrated me to no end. However, the eternal optimist in me just kept hoping. . . .

Nastya's silence is something I didn't quite catch onto for quite awhile. I think that is because she narrates from the beginning and I just assumed she was interacting with the people around her. Then, all of a sudden it hit me. . . this girls hasn't said one word to anyone. That's certainly something you don't see everyday.

Josh Bennett isn't a hunk, but he sure is sweet. I picture Josh as a short, stocky guy who dresses like a construction worker. He has an impenetrable shield around him to keep anyone from getting too close. Drew, his hunky, popular friend is the only one thus far able to break through but that's only because he has been around for so long. Despite this hard exterior Josh Bennett is a marshmallow and Nastya brings that out of him just by being there.

The Sea of Tranquility isn't a plot driven novel, but rather a study of characters. If you enjoy learning many aspects of a character and you enjoy character development then I think you will love this story. If you prefer world building or plot and action then it's safe to say that you probably won't. I for one love seeing why people are the way they are and love the development of characters so I found this novel to be incredible. It's definitely one I will be buying and placing on my shelves. . .which is a rare thing indeed.

way too slow for me, and a bit confusing because at first Nastya says that she's the carbon copy of her mother and then she says that she spent her childhood wishing to have a face like her mother's??? and also that she doesn't talk to anyone but just out of the blue she opens up to Josh??? it doesn't work like that. I've read 24 chapters and I still don't know what happened to her. it's good but sloooooooooooow and i don't know how i'm supposed to continue reading it without falling asleep.
to be honest i was a bit disappointed because based on the reviews i've read i thought it would be better.
Nastya is weird as fuck i couldn't really connect with her. I didn't like Josh either.
I have so many problems with it but the biggest one is that it just was not believable. This book is not for me.

Overall, I enjoyed this book, but didn't love it. Although tragic, there was too much self-pity and self-loathing for me which spoilt the flow of the story and made it quite boring in parts. However, the author kept the reader in suspense by only offering only small clues to what happened to Nastya throughout the novel so that you had to keep reading to discover the whole disaster. The characters were all complex, flawed and witty, but I didn't really like Nastya despite what was taken from her, how she treated her family was unacceptable and some of the choices she made didn't really make sense. Josh, on the other hand was great. I liked his voice and how he treated Nastya and helped her through her pain. I also liked the secondary characters Clay and Drew who bought some lighter moments to a fairly depressing book, especially Drew with his male chauvinism and sexual innuendos. This book is for older teens as it has fairly explicit sexual content, language, heavy drinking and some confronting issues.

It's definitely a YA and romance book. But it's not really about romance. It's about bad things that happen, consequences and how they could hurt and how somebody needs some exit door from those who loved her to give her some space, to let strangers knew new her and gradually start a new life. This books is raw and not always beautiful and I liked it, YA books shouldn't be always light romance or on the other hand erotic, they could have more depth inside and still make you feel young again.

This story about two teens who are trying to cope after tragedy is dark, raw, intense and not especially uplifting. It also has a lot of mature content for a teen novel. But I really loved it and was pulled into the story from the very beginning. I listened to the audiobook, which is a format I don't use very often as I sometimes have trouble paying attention. I didn't have any trouble paying attention to this story as it grabbed me and didn't let go until the last word, 13 hours later. At the beginning of The Sea of Tranquility, Nastya, a 17 year old girl with a mysterious secret, starts attending a new school. It is apparent early on that she has suffered a severe tragedy, and that she is most definitely not okay. She doesn't speak to anyone, she dresses like a whore, she has issues with her left hand, and as the novel continues, the reader (or listener, in my case) pieces together bit by bit what has happened to leave her in such a state. Josh Bennett has also suffered his share of tragedy, as nearly everyone he has ever loved has been taken from him. At this point, the story sounds like it will be predictable teen fare: two teens with tragic pasts find solace in each other's arms and all of their problems suddenly disappear. And while there are elements of this in The Sea of Tranquility, I felt like the novel was so much deeper. I was especially pleased with the ending. I was worried about where the story was going, and that I wouldn't like it. I thought either everything would be wrapped up in a perfect little bow, or everyone would be left wallowing in their misery. Somehow, Katja Millay managed to find a middle ground, providing an ending that was both satisfactory and realistic.

Nastya has moved in with her aunt who lives two hours away from her hometown to try and start over. But will she have the courage to face her deepest fears? Josh has lived in the same town his whole live and everyone knows his story. Will he be be able to connect with anyone ever again? When Nastya and Josh cross paths they find something in each other that brings them close without even saying a word.

I thought this book was pretty amazing. Katja Millay has a winner! At first you just wish you could shake Nastya just to make her talk, but then you get to know her more and you just want to save the little girl she was. Josh is the quit guy who is good with his hands, who wouldn’t be attracted to that, but he is so much more than just an average teenage guy. Both of these characters have had an intense life up to this point and they both still have a long way to go. I thought these two made great friends and they found each other when they needed the other most, and they didn’t even know it. Through there own kind of therapy things start to look up, until someones feelings get hurt. I enjoyed the journey that Katja brought me on, there was so many emotions and the ending. Oh my God the ending. I’ll stop before I tell you what it is because well you have to read the book to find out.

Books aren’t meant for everyone to like and this is definitely a YA book so if you don’t like reading about high schoolers, I still think you might like the story behind it anyways because it is not your typical high school romance drama.

I received this book from the publisher through netgalley for my honest review

4.5 stars. This book was an amazing look at the way we deal with trauma and emotions. The MC had a lot to deal with and this glimpse into how she was coping should resonate with a lot of readers. I would recommend this for anyone who enjoyed Gayle Forman's If I Stay. It was gritty and rough, but extremely real.
