About this audiobook

From the bestselling author of The Secret of Ella and Micha comes a mesmerizing novel of fate, friendship, and the healing power of love . . .

THE COINCIDENCE OF CALLIE
& KAYDEN

For Kayden, suffering in silence was the only way to survive. If he was lucky, he could keep his head down, do as he was told, and make it through the day. But one night it seemed like his luck-and his life-might finally end . . . until an angel named Callie appeared just in time to rescue him.

Callie has never believed in luck. Not since her twelfth birthday when everything was taken from her. After the worst was over, she locked up her feelings and vowed never to tell anyone what happened. Now, six years later, she continues to struggle with the painful secret that threatens to consume her.

When fate lands Kayden and Callie at the same college, Kayden is determined to get to know the beautiful girl who changed his destiny. Quiet and reserved, Callie still fears letting anyone else into her world. But Kayden is certain that Callie has come back into his life for a reason. And the more he tries to be a part of her life, the more he realizes that, this time, it's Callie who needs to be saved . . .

I wasn't a fan of Cayden's voice so that ruined the audiobook for me. Otherwise, the story was ok.

"The day I changed is like a scar. It's there, a memory in my mind, something I always remember, and can never erase." If you ever want to read a book that will tear you apart, grab a book my Jessica Sorenson. This has been on my TBR for so long, but I was hesitant to grab for it since I have loved all the books I previously read by JS. This was pretty hyped in the book world, and I did not want to be disappointed…I was not! This deals with some pretty serious issues including child abuse, sexual abuse, and suicide. It is about moving on and how to trust again. I love the character development and how the author even makes you fall in love with the side characters. I know there are stories about these characters later in the series, and I love how they are just as developed as the main characters and I look forward to reading more about their story as well.I just finished! Did it really just end like that????? Need book 2 now!

I really liked the characters separately, but then something didn't clicked for me when things started to happen between them. They had their sweet moments, but the chemistry factor wasn't all that strong IMO. That said, the plot and the background of the main characters was great and heartbreaking too. Can't wait to see what happens in book two after that cliffhanger from hell.

I LOVED this book!!! It deals with very intense issues so well. I loved the writing style and could walk around quoting the book forever. I cried and laughed through out the whole book. When I finished I wanted to pick in up and read it all over again. WARNING: the book has the worst cliff hanger!!!

This book = a MUST read! You are literally drawn in from sentence one. Your heart will be ripped out and barely stay lodged in your chest until the last page. Then things get really dicey. I guarantee you will fall in love with Callie and Kayden, and suffer right a long with them as they navigate through this crazy thing we call life. Trying to overcome insurmountable obstacles, all the while bearing the burden on their own shoulders. Can two broken people heal each other and themselves? Especially when what has broken then continues to? Only time will tell. Luckily, the second book was just released!

The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden by Jessica SorensenYou can find this review at My Favorite Things (heffroberts.blogspot.com)The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden by Jessica Sorensen is a book with a serious cliff-hanger. Consider yourself forewarned. I still remember the first time I read this book (December 2012), the feelings it evoked, the jaw-dropping shock when the book ended and I was looking for more pages because, hey, that can't be the end right?!? Callie & Kayden are two very messed up individuals with very troubled pasts. In their first year at college, away from their home town, the dark clouds have started to lift from their lives. With the help of her new found best friend Seth, Callie is emerging of from her self-imposed isolation. She's let her hair grow, she's making an effort to wear brighter cloths, to be less afraid of standing out or being seen. Kayden was dead inside when Callie saved him. She revived the tiny spark of life he had when she put her tiny self between him and his brutal father. Flash forward to the end of that summer and the start of Freshman year and he doesn't recognize his savior she has changed so much. Things begin to click into place for him, the spark is growing, he can't stop thinking about Callie, the more he does the brighter the spark gets.Together they may just be able to save themselves, if the monsters from their pasts don't take that chance away from them.Good news - The sequel should be out on August 6, 2013 so not too much longer to wait to resolve the cliffhanger ending.

Callie and Kayden are both teenagers who have survived terrible childhood abuse but have both grown up in drastically different ways. Callie having been assaulted as a young girl survived by withdrawing, making herself as ugly as possible and living to just to make it to the day when she could move away from her jerk brother and disappointed parents. College in her mind equals freedom, its a chance to escape what people call her: "the freak, the goth demon girl or the scary anorexic loser". Callie just wants a fresh start because most girls hate her and boys ignore her, shedding the outside skin she personifies is all shes ever wanted, but shedding the inside will not be so easy, deep down is a lost, scared girl trying to deal with the trauma her past inflicted on her.Kayden has grown up all his life under the fists of his alcoholic father, but the community and all his friends only see the outside: a well to do family, respected pillars and the outrageously good looking quarterback all star son. While Kayden has masked himself in popularity, sports and girls, he really only wants to get out after graduation and break away from the violence that surrounds him everyday. Even with his popularity all of Kayden's pain is hidden, he won't talk to anyone and he certainly cannot share with friends or family what he does to deal with that pain. One night changes everything for Kayden, and that is the night Callie stumbles upon him being beaten by his father. She interrupts the fight, helps Kayden clean up and hurry's just as fast out of his life, until weeks later when they run into each other at the same college. The encounter brings them together and undeniable sparks fly everywhere, considering Callie knows Kayden's secret, she is one of first people he's ever been able to talk to. Callie however will not open up, the memories are so fresh, her trust is so low that every time an emotion escapes her she fights the urge to throw it all up (literally) but she also can't resist Kayden and the overwhelming feelings she has towards him. There has never been a boyfriend and even though college has brought independence and an amazing best friend who helped her find confidence, Callie is afraid to take the next step with Kayden. Fear of rejection and PTSD symptoms from her assault are all working against something she never thought was possible, love. Everything is at the boiling point for our young characters, true love is really happening but Kayden along with Callie is keeping secrets and life will never be the same after the line of no going back gets crossed. You would think by the cover, this book screams sexy, and while the sexual chemistry and romance is sexy don't let that fool you about this book. While presented in a soft manner, I thought the issues were very dramatic, sad and scary. The circumstances are laced with heavy heartbreak and stomach turning events. Issues like rape, child molestation, physical child abuse and on going issues of cutting, bulimia and self mutilation are never easy subjects to take lightly, and I would be leery of recommending this book to anyone who has suffered or is dealing with an eating or cutting disorder. Outside of the heavy, Callie and Kayden's story was a unique read, the tone was rather light in the face of tragedy, the author focuses on those terrible issues by not sugar coating and making them unimportant, but somehow manages to focus on the couples growing romance and overall personalities giving the reader a story outside of the story. Instead of just reading about a girl who is puking you read about the feelings prior to the puking. Instead of looking at these kids as losers, creeps or messed up broken beings, we see the total control these coping mechanisms have reeked on each of their individual life, without the help they needed we see how untreated trauma grew in them emotionally and mentally.I liked the time I spent reading this book, I loved that I saw a path of healing and a coming to grips with the issues. I loved the relationships of friends, the significance of trust and watching the characters being able to move past horrific ordeals, however as sexy and lighthearted the author tried make this, its still a hard read, considering the drama was all the possible worst things that kids can go through, rape and abuse are nothing to be entertained by. With the book split between both characters you go from Callie's issues of sexual assault to Kayden's desire of wanting to push his boy parts in her, a truly conflicting experience for the reader. I guess the question to ponder is will you walk away with a unique experience or be entertained by the issues for the sake of a dramatic read?

The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden by Jessica Sorensen

First I have to say Jessica Sorensen is a fantastic author. Her writing is well written, Jessica has the ability to put words down on a piece a paper that makes you feel so caught up in the lives of her characters.

This story is about two young people who have experienced so much pain in their young lives that they cannot wait to go to college to escape their life at home.

As you get involved in this story you feel so much for Callie and Kayden that you praying their lives are going to get better by being together.

    This story is heartbreaking.

This is book you just have to read. I can say whole heartily you will not be disappointed.

Now about the ending ....OMG I really need to stalk Jessica and find out when the next book is coming out.

There is so much more I can say about this book, but what I would recommend is that you head over to Amazon and get a copy NOW!

Could there possibly be two souls so tortured that they are afraid to let the other in!?! This book is.... I don't have words. Inspiring, riveting, heartbreaking, loving, compassionate.... So many words can be said about this book. Callie was raped on her 12th birthday and never got over it. She withdrew from life altogether. Kayden (and his brothers) were beat, and I mean beat, by their father and ignored by their mother. He gave up on life a long time ago. This is the beginning of two people, who lost their self identities along time ago, finding their journey of self healing and love. They grew up in the same town. End up at the same college. Find a common bond deep down in their soles....

I enjoyed this one and devoured in less than 24 hours... I connected with Callie and Kayden, and their emotional turmoil was really well written and the emotions drew me into the story. It is told in dual narrative and it is clear cut who is talking and what is going on. The voices are done well, and both have a story to tell. Callie's friendship with Seth was another thing that I really liked about this story. He had a great personality and it felt like a bff or very good brother and sister relationship because he is protective, but he encourages her and understands her. So, here is where many will probably start to turn away, because he is gay. Yes, I know. Formulaic right? The two damaged people falling in love and helping each other heal, and oh by the way there is the gay best friend. I have read a lot from my commenters (yes I love you all) that they are tired of this type of story because it is predictable. But it was exactly what I needed, and wanted in a story right now, and that is what it comes down to. Great characters, good writing, and emotional response. There are a lot of secrets and a few twists that I didn't see coming. But it was good about giving details a little at a time to form the whole picture even though you get the general idea of what happened to Callie and Kayden right away. But there are intricacies that come out through the story, and they both grow page by page and that is great to watch. But that ending, it is the mother of all cliff hangers, and made me mad. I can't wait for the next one!Bottom Line: Emotional book where I connected with the main characters.

This could have been ok, but it treated some pretty sensitive subjects in an exploitative way.

Spoiler alert: self-mutilation, abuse, and rape feature pretty heavily in this.

This book is such an emotional drainer.
As I just finished it up I have a huge pit in my stomach and feel like crying!
What the hell can a book even do that to someone?
Kayden & Callie have demons but they finally let each other in - not all the way but enough. Just when things start going , gosh I can't even say they are going good for them but rather they really connect it all comes crumbling down. The ending made me want to chuck my ereader across the room!
For real Jessica Sorensen you left it like that?Lol. I know you have another book up your sleeve there is no way you can leave it like that they need one hell of a HEA!

    Quotes:

"I can handle scars, especially ones the are on the outside."

"It's amazing how the things you remember forever are the things you'd rather forget."

"I can do pain. That's the easy part of life. It's everything else, happiness, laughter, love,
    that's fucking complicated."

Update!! February 2013 - the sequel for this one was pushed back a whole year. No matter the fact it shouldn't have been split to two (or more) books, you might want to hold for the 2nd book before you read this one. AND make sure you buy the latest published edition of this one. It will probably be reedited and proofed by the publisher. First edition was self published. /end of update

    OMFG

I'll get back to review this when my heart stops beating its way out of my body.

Eeeep, ok - 4.5 stars for this one.

First, it's really good. During most of it, you feel like the story is predictable, and it is. But then, it isn't. I'm not even going to touch the way this book ended, but only say that Jessica Sorensen is lucky there's a 2nd book coming out next month. LOL

Callie is an introvert of sort. Not entirely by choice. On her 12th birthday her life changed and she closed herself off from the world. Distanced herself from everyone overnight and became the class weirdo.

Kayden feels nothing. Not love, not pain, not much of anything. He's been abused for most of his life, but no one knows it. His family is perfect.

One day Callie saves him then disappears. When their paths cross again, everything changes.

Heartbreaking story, beautiful and unfortunately - there are probably more people in the world living it than we'd like.

    Is it February yet?

4.5 stars because the ending pissed me off. While I enjoyed this book, the god awful cliffhanger at the end makes me want to hurt someone. :) I hate cliffhangers with an unbridled passion. That said, this book had everything I love. Damaged characters working through their issues as abuse survivors to find their way to each other. I loved the steady progression of Callie and Kayden and how they grew to trust each other. My only real complaint as I've said was the ending. It wasn't really an ending at all, but like I was reading and all of a sudden it was cut off in the middle of a climatic scene. Which is exactly what happened. It wasn't really an ending to a book. More like a chapter and you expect there to be a resolution to begin on the next page, only there isn't. It just ends. *throws hands up in the air* Now I have to wait god knows how long to see what happens. Not cool. ;)

I fell in love with this cover, but now I love it even more because it fits the book so much. It's absolutely gorgeous.

I'm overwhelmed with all the ~feels about this right now. As long as I don't think about how it ends (or doesn't), I love this book. But more about that later.

The story pulls you in right from the beginning, you can tell right away that it will be one hell of a ride with these two. It's a bit heavy, everyone has issues in this, but it's nothing over-the-top. I love the way it's written, it's perfectly paced, the characters are wonderful and real, and the author managed to give the main characters completely different voices. There's awesome chemistry between Kayden and Callie, but you also love them with Luke and Seth.

I just wanted to hug Kayden. I hated the way he deals with his life - even if it made sense, and that's what makes it so sad. It's horrible when someone who should be your biggest comfort fails you like that. I'm not talking just about his father, but his whole family, and everyone that turned their backs to what was happening. It's no wonder he just wants to shut himself off.

Callie's story has been told many, many times before, but it gets me every time when I read about things like these. My heart kept breaking for her, it's bad enough that it happened, but to keep it all in like that...I have to wonder how did nobody see what it did to her? How can parents ignore the fact that their child changes overnight?
And who did this to her? Jessica Sorensen reveals the story slowly, however, she does heavily hint at it in the beginning and I figured it out so it didn't come as a big surprise.

The title makes so much sense. I loved the slow progress of their relationship, the subtle buildup of sexual tension and the change in their feelings towards the other. These two broken people that heal each other, I always love stories like these. They have this connection and you just know they'll be good for each other.

I didn't read anything by this author before, although I did plan on it sometime. I'm curious about her other work now.

The ending? Yeah, abrupt, a huge cliffhanger which might make you curse - it felt more like an end of a chapter, so I can't even say there is an ending of this book and it left me pretty unsatisfied that the story basically didn't finish.
I really hope we don't have to wait too long to see where the story goes, though.

Edit: after a lot of thinking, I am taking a star off this review because of the ending.

I was stuck in a book rut and came across this book in the store. I couldn't be more pleased that I did! It was everything I was craving in a book and more. The story was gritty, emotional, romantic, mysterious, and just plain addicting!

It was about a guy named Kayden and a girl named Callie. Both characters were broken with deep set, emotional damage. Both held their hurt inside and both were afraid to reveal their darkest secrets. Eventually though, the truth needed to be set free and when it was, it caused a whirlwind of changes.

Talk about an emotionally intense story packed with twists and turns. The whole time I was on the edge of my seat begging for answers. I wanted to know what their secrets were. With each page I was captivated and sucked into the character's world. When the secrets were revealed my heart about exploded. It hurt for Callie and Kayden. I just wanted them to find happiness within one another and shut out the rest of the world.

The ending was not what I expected... It was a cliffhanger that leaves many things up in the air. I would have liked to have more answers before the end, but I guess I will just have to read the next book to find out what happens.

I highly recommend this read to all readers looking for a read with substance, that will pull out tons of emotion.

    Gist:

The story follows the lives of 2 people who are so broken that one resorts to inflicting injuries on himself along with enduring his father's violence and the other closes herself from the rest of the world, suffering on her own and letting people judge her for things she should be sympathized for. It takes us through the journey of these 2 individuals- Callie and Kayden as they face the problems in their lives together...

    Characters:

I really liked both Callie and Kayden!

Sweet, shy Callie who helped a person she didn't even know, even though the truth she was burdened with at that time was so much more than something she could handle. Even though in the start she seemed like a weak protag because she let "that" incident empower her, I guess every person faces their problems differently and perhaps Callie didn't have it in her at that time to break free from the chains which held her down. I was really happy when she finally had the courage to face some of her fears.

Kayden was really similar to Callie in so many ways! He too let the bad things in his life stop from letting him grow as a person! However having Callie by his side really did wonders for him. Who would have thought that a complete stranger[not literally] would turn out to be his savior??

We all say that opposites attract and that 2 people with completely different personalities balance each other. But the question here is would this coincidence have worked for Callie & Kayden had they been different? Perhaps what we really need is not a different person balancing us but a similar one enhancing us!!

I really loved Seth because he played the most imp. part in Callie breaking out of her shell. I loved the way he made the idea to make a list with things each of them would overcome!

Callie Kayden = Hot, Sizzling Chemistry! <3

Their relationship was probably the only thing keeping them from closing down forever. And when a totally defeated person is given even the smallest ray of hope, what does he do? ...He clings to it with everything he has. That was what Kayden & Callie's relationship was probably like and maybe it was that desperation they had to cling to each other that made their romance so damn sizzling!

    Dislikes:

    1. Despite everything that happened Callie still couldn't or maybe didn't fight the 1 incident that had been strangling her all her life.

    2. Kayden somewhat using Callie to drown his problems.

    3. The abrupt ending.

    Conclusion:

This book was a really emotional one and although it is not one which will make you cry, it will surely touch your heart. The one thing which will win you over is how Kayden really emerges out at the end - fighting his fears head on.

However the most important thing I learnt from this book is that if we keep quiet about any kind of violence we are subjected to [like Callie & Kayden] just for the sake of people around us, we are not only ruining our lives but probably some other person too who might become a victim of something similar! & we let the wrong doer get away with his actions.

    Best Quote:

“In the existence of our lives, there is a single coincidence that brings us together and for a moment, our hearts beat as one.”

Man Oh Man WHY , WHY , did I do this to myself and leave myself with a major cliffhanger and now waiting for the rest .........

This Book consumed me for the last 24 hrs . It is full of emotion, heartache for the characters and everything else in between...

This story was more than captivating, it was breathtaking. The characters were endearing and their journey will undeniably stay with you. Be prepared for an emotional, shattering journey, bring some tissues, but whatever you do, don’t miss this experience.

"It's amazing how the things you remember forever are the things you'd rather forget and the things you desperately want to grasp onto seem to slip away like sand in the wind.”

There are those who don’t get luck handed to them on a shiny platter, who end up in the wrong place at the wrong time, who don’t get saved.

Luck was not on Callie’s side the day of her twelfth birthday when everything was stolen from her. After it’s all over, she locks up her feelings and vows never to tell anyone what happened. Six years later her painful past consumes her life and most days it’s a struggle just to breathe.

For as long as Kayden can remember, suffering in silence was the only way to survive life. As long as he did what he was told, everything was okay. One night, after making a terrible mistake, it seems like his life might be over. Luck was on his side, though, when Callie coincidentally is in the right place at the right time and saves him.

Now he can’t stop thinking about the girl he saw at school, but never really knew. When he ends up at the same college as Callie, he does everything he can to try to get to know her. But Callie is reserved and closed off. The more he tries to be part of her life, the more he realizes Callie might need to be saved.

“I take my time because I love how it feels to carry her, the way she needs me, the way I need to protect her.”

Characters: not only are Callie and Kayden so beautifully written, we also have amazing secondary characters such as Seth and Kayden’s friend Luke. Both Callie and Kayden have had a horrible childhood and they both have a dangerous way of coping with the effects. Although Callie’s trust has been shattered, she still cares about Seth (as a friend) and Kayden enough that she is willing to face her insecurities. Kayden’s best defense is to not let himself feel, but he can’t fight the way he feels about Callie.

There was so much emotional charge infused in this novel that I could not get my mind off of these two characters the entire time I was reading their story. I loved everything about this book … from the alternating POV’s, to the perfectly flawed characters, and the gradual build up between Callie and Kayden.

“I've never felt like this before, with anyone. It's against the rules of surviving.”

I hate , hate , hate cliffhangers and I knew better , but I could not wait , and NOW I am stuck waiting until Feb 28th to see what happens next .......

This was the last book I finished in 2012. I read it after all the "Best of" lists and posts, which is extremely unfortunate, because this was easily one of the best, if not actually the best, book I read all year. I can't articulate enough my extreme love for this book! In no way, shape, or form, was I expecting this fantastic-ness.

I mean I really, really liked Ella and Micha and knew Sorensen had a flair for awesome contemporary writing, but seriously, Callie and Kayden blew my away. And yes, this is going to be a very gushy review. I'm not going to apologize either, just warn.

Intense, intense, intense. Definitely not "light reading" but oh-so-addicting! Sorensen seriously handles heavy moments and subjects so beautifully; As well as creating some awesome characters. I mean, come on, Seth? Move over, Callie, I want to be his best friend! I love Sorensen's way of making her secondary characters become just as memorable and great as the MCs.

The romance is spot-on. It's believable and there was absolutely no question that Callie and Kayden just had to find a way to be together. Kayden has taken the top spot as my favorite YA male character. (Previously held my Jude Ryder from Crash). He's sweet and adorable and so understanding of Callie
and her situation. My heart just breaks for him and his own life. Honestly, I found this story to be nothing less than perfection.

The only negative thing I can find is that dang ending. I seriously thought I still had a few more pages to go and then out of no where -BAM- there were no more words left. I'm going to go crazy waiting for book 2 to find out what the heck is going to happen!

    GO READ THIS ONE NOW!

I'm a sucker for nice covers and I'm a sucker for clichès like kissing in the rain.

So that's already two good points. Even better though was the story itself - it was a simple but very intense. I enjoyed getting to know Callie and Kaden as they learned about themselves and developed trust to each other.

Callie is sad but very gentle and once she came a little out of her shell, it was easy to see why Kayden fell in love with her. Oh that reminds me, there's no talk about loving each other - none of that "I love you so much and can't live without you" after two days. I really liked that about this book. Love and trust takes time and this book makes a lovely but hard journey out of it.

Both have their issues but both are trying to work them out, sometimes more and sometimes less successful. There's a wide array of emotions in this book. To name a few of them: giddiness, love, joy, lust, anger, intense fear and shame.

I can't imagine going through the hardships Callie had to live through and not talking about any of it for six years. Kudos to Seth for earning her trust and helping her find herself. Seth is easily one of mos likeable secondary characters, as well as Luke. They all have their story and their burden and yet together as friends they work.

I only wish I could read the second book, especially becaus eof the cliffhanger at the end which left me feeling like a part of the story was missing. Other than that I have no complaints, expect that it was too short and I would've liked to read more.

There's one absolutely beautiful quote that I have to share: "In the existence of our lives, there is a single coincidence that brings us together and for a moment, our hearts beat as one."

This was a really difficult book for me to read as it touches on some very personal emotions the story was a bit confusing to understand and I didn't get the resolution at the end I was hoping for but I suppose I'll have to read the next one to find out what happens.
I didn't like all the wallowing and the regressive behavior but then again some people hold onto their pain like a blanket of comfort.
As this is a youth read I get all the angst the author wrote since emo is so popular for this generation and depression and pain are appealing to those types.
I was hoping for some blooming and blossoming for the characters to get over their pasts and to become better for their experiences but alas there was none to be found.
No healing, no resolution, no happy ending.
I guess that's life. Some of us don't get those happy endings or healing experiences that help us move on.
I thought the characters had gotten over their past since the jump into college together after being reunited again but instead the group of friends being brought back together only seemed to make things worse and really didn't solve anything for the over all story or characters.
