About this audiobook

Magic, mayhem and madness explode in this third installment in the Jessica McClain series.

Jessica McClain is on the run... again.

Finally reunited with Rourke, Jessica arrives home to find that her best friend has been kidnapped, her father has vanished, and the supernatural Sects – witches, demons, and sorcerers – don't even have the courtesy to wait until she is unpacked to attack.

Now, mastering her powers as the sole female werewolf might not be enough to save them. Thrown together in a shaky truce with the Vampire Queen, Jessica must show all the different Sects what the true meaning of "the enemy of my enemy" is or her father will die...

I feel as if Carlson's writing has improved by leaps and bounds over the course of this series. I enjoyed this book far more than the preceding two. The action was tighter and the stakes seemed more desperate. I enjoyed the new characters introduced and the information about existing characters that was revealed. I'm especially interested in the outcome of Jessica's deal with Eudoxia.

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie TalesQuick & Dirty: An incredibly action-packed urban fantasy.Opening Sentence: “Get down!” Tallulah Talbot, the most powerful witch in the country, grabbed on to my arm and hurled us both into the bushes. The Review:I will try to review this novel without giving away too many spoilers from previous novels. The events for this novel were set up at the end of the previous novel, Hot Blooded. Cold Blooded picks up immediately after the events of Hot Blooded with Jessica realizing that her witch friend Marcy is missing. Amanda Carlson wastes no time getting Jess into action as she and her friends are under attack by sorcerers. Jess goes to the only place that she can think of to get away from the battle, to the witches. The witches offer up a little help but a prophetic vision sends Jess away to the one place she doesn’t want to go, the vampires in New Orleans. The vampires want Jess for some unknown reason but it seems that every supernatural wants Jess dead or as a pawn. There are so many reasons for Jess not to go to New Orleans but it is the biggest, most powerful reason that makes her take that journey and since Jess has a standing order to meet with the vampires in the near future she decides to go before the scheduled time.I can’t really talk to much more about the events in this novel because there would be too many spoilers with everything that is going on. This novel is non-stop action with Jess moving from one problem to another without much time to barely stop and take a breath, even if she does get a “down time” she uses it to its fullest. The events of this novel go so quick that I barely even think a few days pass and Jess only gets a few shut eyes in a moving vehicle.Jessica McClain is one tough cookie. Whenever it appears she has a weakness, it is quickly overcome, but not without an inner battle or a confusing conversation. I really liked Jess in past books but there was just something about her always having to escape a dangerous situation because people don’t like the fact that she is a female werewolf that just annoys me. Nobody can just talk or figure things out. They are just helping make Jess’s prophecy true. I feel like the actual layout of the novel is action, long discussion, action, more discussion and this just keeps going until everyone stops to discuss what is going to happen in the next book after the final fight and revelations of this step in Jessica’s non-stop journey.Overall, Cold Blooded was a non-stop action-packed urban fantasy. I really enjoyed the action but I did have some annoyance towards Jess’s constant confusing conversations in between everything, whether she was arguing with someone or just arguing with herself or her inner wolf. I don’t mind books wrapping up the events at the end but I’m not really a huge fan of the complete wind down while discussing the plans for what’s going to happen next and then just ending. I always feel a little let down at the end. I do anticipate the next book, Red Blooded, and I hope I’m in a better place mentally to really enjoy it.Notable Scene:The Suburban, with Nick at the wheel, rounded the corner, going up on two wheels. There was a loud explosion and an Orb flew over the trees, coming at us like a heat-seeking missile.Rourke leaned over and threw open my door, yelling, “Go! I’m right behind you.”I sprang from the car and took off at a dead run. The Orb exploded behind me, taking out the Porsche.Car doors slammed and Tyler, Danny, and Nick joined us as we ran for the huge stone wall surrounding the mansion.“Let me go first. If I get through, follow me,” I called over my shoulder, clearing the massive height in one leap. Nothing kicked me back, but a strange pulse of energy whipped through my body as I crossed the boundary line. Thank goodness it wasn’t warded.I landed easily and kept running. I was up the steps to the front door, happy that nothing exploded behind me, before I took my next breath. I slid to a stop just short of kicking in the door, which would be considered bad manners for a visiting guest. I turned and glanced back for the first time and realized no one was behind me.I watched as each of them tried to clear the wall again and was repelled backward.Damn.It was warded. I just hadn’t been affected by it.FTC Advisory: Orbit provided me with a copy of Cold Blooded. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

Cold Blooded is the third book in the Jessica McClain series by Amanda Carlson.

What can I say? When you expect that a series can’t hold you captive and waiting FOR MONTHS (yep! I am still dealing with the fact that I have to wait a MONTHS to know what’s going to happen… Not cool Mrs. Carlson, not cool), you find this one!

We started this series with Jessica completely out of touch with her real persona, and is nice to see her evolving into a confident Alpha! (Well she runs on hope in some parts, but I guess that is part of being a leader).

In this book Jessica is finally spending time with her mate, and well, what can I say about Rourke. This guy is so freaking awesome, he is a badass and a sweetheart, and definitely the perfect compliment for Jessica. He is such a key piece in her life that for romantics like me will have you saying awwww! more than a good couple of times (important, if you live in a house filled with testosterone like mine, you should find a spot away from the guys, unless you like being look at as if you were having some kind of hormonal crisis… Well you might feel like it at the end of the book. Yes! spoiler alert: it ends on a cliffhanger! That will give you some Anger! Oh, and did I mention you will have
to wait months for the next book?).

Anyway, you still get the characters from past books, and some new ones. I love Danny, he has the kind of sense of humor that I appreciate, and he will not let you down in this book, as well as Jessica’s brother, Tyler, he kind of reminds me of my sister (@BookaholicCat), he tries to trust her, and let her evolve and grow into what she is, but at the same time he will give his life to make sure she is safe and happy.
Jessica’s dad is still awesome. Callum is always taking care of his pack and his family and going the extra mile to protect them.

On the new characters… Well some you will love, others you will hate! For example there is one particular witch that I guess we’ll be hearing about her again, that is the typical … B**, or mean girl if you feel more comfortable calling her “mean”, but I think she could become an interesting character. So on the witches side, there will be interesting things, some which will let you wondering, I am sure that a good couple of characters that are introduced in this book, will take a big part in the future. Oh! And talking about wondering, you will get to know some information on the Vamp’s Queen history… Shocking! There will even be the introduction to some of her family members and origins! You will have a mixture of she is a horrible being and some that you will try to “understand her” (she is still a “mean” one).

And off course as if Jessica didn’t have enough with figuring out the whole truth about her, a new relationship, a pack of wolves that still doesn’t fully accept her, a weird relationship with the witches, and a crazy “mean” vamp queen… Well we now have the underworld coming to fill her agenda!

There isn’t much more I can say without spoiling it for you. Just that be ready to be wanting more.
As I said as soon as I finished this book… Mrs. Carlson was “Cold blooded” to leave us hanging like this. (I wasn’t available to start reading anything for a good couple of days… Book hungover?), but none the less it is worth it.

I would like to thank both NetGalley and Orbit for offering me the chance to read this ARC all in exchange for an honest review. Though I received the e-book for free that in no way influences this review.NOTE: If you have not yet read the prior books in this series, I strongly urge you to stop reading right here, and return only after you have read them in order. Unlike some series the individual books in this series do not work well as stand-alone books. There is far too much explained and set up in the first book, which the second book then expands upon, for this third book to make much sense without the information that came before. You certainly may read this as a stand-alone if you wish, but you will be missing out on large portions of the story.I was so excited to be given the honor of writing a review for this book, given how much I enjoyed the previous books in the series. And thankfully the book did not let me down, but instead offered another roller-coaster ride full of action and emotion, passion and power, and just plain old fashioned fun!Jessica arrives back in town to find her best friend missing and the most powerful witch in the country is blaming her for it. But before they can move to save her, the group is attacked. On the run, Jessica and Rourke head to the mountains. Several surprises await them, but in order to save her father they are forced to leave for New Orleans early.Arriving on the Vampire Queen's doorstep unexpectedly, and bringing trouble on their heels, the Sects are thrown into an all out war. The viciousskirmish ends up forcing the vamps and Jessica to fight on the same team. The Vamp Queen ends up owing Jessica, but what Jessica doesn't realize is just how soon she'll have to cash it in...The story picks up pretty much where things left off in Hot Blooded, with Jessica and Rourke beyond anxious to cement their bond as mates, all while trying to survive the nonstop barrage of danger being thrown their way. Before they can even begin to consider relaxing they find Tally, Marcy's waiting for them at Jessica's office. And once again Jessica's life begins spiraling out of control - only this time she is bringing Rourke with her.Tally insists that Jessica and Rourke head to her coven, regardless of how Jessica & Rourke feel about it, and they aren't about to piss off the most powerful witch on the continent if not the world, no matter how badly they are craving some 'alone' time to make their bond complete. While there Jessica gets into a typical pissing contest with one of the witches, and because of that she and Rourke end up having to leave on a little scooter that can hardly clear the ground with Rourke's solid weight on it. And off they go, trying to get to their mountain to deal with Ray and give naomi a break, as well as having some alone time. But like all of Jessica's plans things don't work out as desired. This book, like the one before it, is filled with non-stop action as well as tender moments stolen whenever and where ever they can be. And Jessica & Rourke aren't the only new mated couple in town. It seems that Jessica is fulfilling this prophecy that she keeps hearing about and knowing far too little about - mating between different sects was unheard of until Jessica and Rourke, And within days there is another inter-sect mated couple, something that is scaring almost all sects, and part of the reason that sects that never before worked together are aligning on one side or the other of the coming fight.Once again Jessica has to deal with the Vampire Queen, but the question is, can she outsmart her on her own grounds? Jessica enters Euduxia's New Orleans house to make a deal, and one deal becomes two and things keep spinning farther and father out from the way the supes have always known them to be, causing serious problems. Not that this will stop Jessica from going after what she wants. Nothing is going to get in her way this time, for she is on a mission. And poor Rourke can only hang on for the ride, knowing that it will only get worse before it gets better - and this is proven out at the end of the book, with another killer cliff hanger leaving me salivating for the next book in the series.Throughout all of this Jessica continues to learn about her powers, and grow as a person, maturing as her adventures continue. She finally learns what kind of cat Rourke is, and has to come to terms with the surprise. But ever with the shock of this discovery her wolf is uber-confident that they are actually more powerful than their mate, which should be impossible since he is close to godhood if what Selene told her in the last book is true. Part of her maturing is learning to trust her inner-wolf and getting her wolf to learn to give the reigns back to Jessica when the situation requires it. Without a doubt this series continues to take the reader on a roller-coaster, fun-filled ride!

This women never gets a little down time. Once again Jessica has been stalked across the country by supernatural baddies and manages to stay a few steps ahead. At this point, all three books are kinda the same. Jessica gets chased, threatened and almost defeated, but she rallys her wolf and figures out some loophole to get out of trouble then when she thinks things are going in her favor someone close to her (Rourke, Marcy, Tyler) gets kidnapped. Granted, all the creatures are new and she's figuring out new powers, but really it's the same plot. That being said I will read the next book to see what happens, but will be sorely disappointed if it ends in the same type of cliffhanger. I would like to see a spin-off series or novellas (even though I usually try to avoid novellas) about the others in the group finding their mates, especially James and Marcy. I feel like I've missed something huge with those two. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

As with the earlier books in the Jessica McClain series COLD BLOODED starts off right after the events of the previous book HOT BLOODED. There is no rest for the wicked as Jessica and her allies are thrown into running from the sorcerers that are working with the Demons and trying to rescue Marcy. From the moment I read BLOODED I fell in love with Jessica. There is something about her that draws you in and holds you hostage while you wait to find out what more could possibly go wrong or right with her. She continues to grow into her new self at every turn. She has no problem getting her hands dirty and she is fiercely protective of anyone she cares about. What more could you want? Oh yeah, a sexy man by her side! All those Jessica and Rourke fans will not be disappointed with the events that happen between these two in COLD BLOODED. As you can guess by the title we have a good amount of time in the presence of vampires. Without going in to spoilers I can say that I was shocked, yet intrigued by what we learn about Eudoxia and the inner workings of the vampires. No matter what happens between Jessica and Eudoxia I know where Jessica is going in RED BLOODED and I plan to be along for the ride.I have given the series so far a steady 5 but COLD BLOODED had me really missing Jessica's pack and I hated not seeing them front and center with her. I kept looking for them to spring up and although they did I didn't get as much time with them as I wanted. I know I suck. The Jessica McClain Series continues to be on my must read, must buy list. Each book has been packed with action, suspense and fabulous characters. I can not imagine why anyone would not enjoy this series.

Reviewed by: Rabid ReadsYou know that expression “go big or go home”? Well, it must be Amanda Carlson’s motto because the only word that comes to my mind after finishing Cold Blooded is EPIC. This book is one, great, big adrenaline rush! Practically every page contains either a shocking revelation or a ferocious battle to the death. This story should even please the romance buffs out there! The sex isn’t plentiful but in Urban Fantasy, it’s about quality not quantity. If the Jessica McClain series isn’t on your auto-buy list yet, it should be.There are a number of unanswered questions that have been plaguing me for a book or two now and I was pleasantly surprised to find a few answers in this installment. I don’t know about you, but the one that’s been bugging me the most was Rourke’s cat. I know that he’s old, powerful and badass so I expected awesomeness and Carlson does not disappoint! I still think that werewolves rule but this series is making me question my disdain for cats, especially those of the shifter variety. Plus, let’s face it, Rourke can make anything look good…Things are changing in a big way in the Jessica McClain universe. The sorcerers team up with the Demon Lords, the witches form a new alliance and the vampires owe the wolves a debt. There’s a lot to take in and at times, I struggled to absorb the massive influx of information. After the last book, I was just starting to get a feel for Jess’ world and then Carlson goes and changes everything on me! Two new breeds of supes are also introduced so, try not to get too absorbed by the non-stop action; make sure you’re paying attention to all of these important details too! I’m thinking a series re-read might be in order before the fourth book hits shelves next year.Jessica really comes into her own in Cold Blooded; not only has she accepted that she’s more powerful than most supes but she actually owns it. Generally speaking, paranormals develop their abilities over time but in McClain’s case it was practically overnight. So, even though she deserves to be in the same room as the Vampire Queen, Eudoxia has a hard time accepting Jess as her equal. Jessica has to fight for every inch she gains, but gain she does! My other complaint with this novel is the werewolf angle; it kind of fell to the sidelines amidst all of the crazy, magic mojo going on. Sure the pack still shifts and McClain fights in her Lycan form but the story just didn’t feel like a werewolf book if that makes any sense.Amanda Carlson has been listening to her readers because Cold Blooded has everything that we’ve been asking for!

Jessica McClain’s adventure continues in book three, Cold Blooded. Her secretary/best friend Marcy has been kidnapped by sorcerers. Tally, Marcy’s aunt, the most powerful witch in the country is holding Jessica accountable. Jessica and Rourke are in hiding from the sorcerers and demons who have teamed up against her. They decide to arrive early to New Orleans to seek assistance from the Vampire Queen, Eudoxia. There is never a dull moment in Jessica’s life.Amanda Carlson once again did a spectacular job in the development of this series. She has created numerous multi-dimensional characters, making the story believable. Jessica McClain, for example, is not perfect. She is a newly turned lycan/werewolf that is still learning her skills. She cares deeply for her friends and family and will do anything for them. This is a novel that is hard to put down. It is also exciting and creative enough that it makes the reader crave the next book in the sequence. I am really glad I discovered Amanda Carson’s Jessica McClain Series. It is a must-read for any paranormal fan.ARC provided by publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
