Rosarito Beach is a suspense novel involving a ballsy DEA agent, who happens to be female, working to take down the ruthless Mexican Olivera clan. Kay Hamilton has no personal life. She lives for the job. Until her 15 year old daughter shows up on her doorstep. Kay was 15 herself when she had Jessica and gave her up for adoption to a distant relative. So this sets the stage for making Kay vulnerable to retaliation of a loved one if she is successful in bring down the heads of the cartel. It held my interest and kept me guessing as to the end. But I don't plan to read the two sequels that have already been published. I would classify as mildly suspenseful.

A resourceful DEA agent Kay Hamilton forces Maria Delgado to go undercover to try to entrap a major drug smuggler, Tito Olivera, which is the brother of the Mexican kingpin, Caesar Oliver is the leader of this cartel family. Things start too unravel when Kay's biological daughter that she gave up for adoption shortly after birth shows up at her doorstep and gets abducted by this ruthless cartel family for ransom. Fast moving thriller, keeping you on the edge of your seat till the last page.

This is the start of a highly entertaining thriller series that I think will do really well commercially. Is that a negative comment? Quite the opposite! The book is pure fun! What it reminded me of was watching an episode of Burn Notice. Fast action, plots within plots, fun characters, lots of government agencies. Kay Hamilton works for the DEA and had some spectacular success in Miami. Now in California, she's on the trail of the brother of the biggest drug boss in Mexico. Capturing him is actually the easy part. What comes next is the REAL problem. As her past comes back to haunt her in ways she could never have guessed, plots are put in motion that are just fun to watch unfold. Don't get me wrong. It's not a humorous book. But it is definitely entertaining and fun. Rosarito Beach is set for release in January 2014. I'll be watching for more in this series!I received this through Goodreads FirstReads and this is my honest review of the book.

I'm afraid Rosarito Beach, author M. A. Lawson's first installment in a series featuring this heroine wasn't my kind of book really. It was an interesting enough action-packed plot that I did enjoy, however, and I am confident many readers will rate this novel highly and follow the protagonist, Kay Hamilton, in her future fictional endeavors.

For example, although I am not as well-read in this sub-genre as would be ideal to make recommendations, I can say that from the first few pages of Rosarito Beach I was struck with the impression of a clear similarity between Lawson's style and that of Janet Evanovich.

I would say that Evanovich, in my experience with her work, includes more "sassy" dialogue as well as cheesy humor -- making her detective series into a bit more cozy mystery-like than action-oriented. Lawson does not include comparable textual elements in this work. Everything is drug-lord-busting adventure action and related dialogue (Kay Hamilton is a DEA agent). The way these elements of the story are written seems to me similar when I compare these two authors. Although Agent Hamilton is focused on her exciting and dangerous work, personal and family relationships create further compelling draws for some readers, I think. I hope this helps some of you; thanks for reading my feedback! Please be advised I received my copy of this book through a Goodreads book giveaway.

I love this lead character, Kay Hamilton. She's young, beautiful and in law enforcement. But unlike many other female lead characters, she is not soft, fluffy, sentimental, dependent on a male partner or obsessed with romance. She is hard core and will do whatever it takes to get the job done. If you like action and plot twists, this book is a must read (release date 12/31). The ending leaves the door open for more Kay Hamilton and I look forward to reading more. Highly recommend.
