About this audiobook

Vampires in Chicago!

You'd think headlines like that would have provoked the fine citizens of the Windy City to take up arms against us bloodsucking fiends. Instead, ten months later, we're enjoying a celebrity status reserved for the Hollywood elite-fending off paparazzi only slightly less dangerous than cross- and stake-wielding slayers. Don't get me wrong. Joe Public isn't exactly thrilled to be living side-by-side with the undead, but at least they haven't stormed the castle...yet.

All that will change once they learn about the Raves-mass feeding parties where vampires round up humans like cattle and drink themselves silly. Most civilized vampires frown on this behavior-but that doesn't make good copy for a first-time reporter looking to impress his high-society family.

So now my "master"-the centuries-old yet gorgeously well-preserved Ethan Sullivan-wants me to reconnect with my own upper-class family and act as liaison between humans and vampires...and keep the more unsavory aspects of our existence out of the media. But someone doesn't want people and vamps to play nicey-nice-someone with an ancient grudge.

I’m completely and utterly consumed by this series. So far each book has been wonderful, the characters are interesting and fun. There’s plenty of action, mystery and schemes for the characters to figure out. So for it’s not at all very sexual and I don’t remember hearing swearing (but unless it’s bad, I probably wouldn’t notice), yeah just get so used to hearing it. I highly recommend this series, it’s so good.

The performance from the reader is very good.

Amazing book. It was just how I like them. Full of adventure and secrets. There could have been a bit more romance in it but maybe I'll get my wish in the next book.

I got this on audio and deals with Merit moving into the house and learning her duties as Sentinel. There is a bit of a mystery with the vampire raves but not much ends up happening with that part of the story line, what it does do is show off Mallory’s new magic skills. Mal and Merit have a bit of a falling out about Merit’s social life as well. here is a bit of a cliffhanger ending and book 3 will pick this right up.

Once again, Cynthia Holloway's narration leaves much to be desired as her inflection is awful and the different voices become interchangeable. This is unfortunate as the world building and characters have definite potential.

The characters still have the occasional bout of childish immaturity. Cadogen house is more like a co-ed sorority and the juvenile dialogue is enough to make the eyes roll back in your head. Nevertheless, it is slightly less irritating than before, or it could merely be that I'm getting used to it.

Merit is an amalgamation of strong will and sweet vulnerability. As a fellow academic, I can really identify with her love of libraries and bookworm mentality, and the internal struggle with her vampire identity only serves to highlight her humanity.

The men in Merit's life are a mixed bag. Ethan is simply scrumptious but then I have a penchant for the sexy, broody and aloof hero who lusts after the heroine against his better judgement. Their sexual tension is a highlight of the book and the library scene is seriously drool worthy. Unfortunately, the other two love interests (past and present) are obnoxious. Morgan is jealous and possessive, which makes him less that endearing, and Nick is a prejudiced jerk who needs a good kick in the ass.

The plot is vastly improved over book #1 although the story still lacks detail regarding the history of the supernatural community in general, and individual characters, such as Ethan and Catcher, in particular. That said, the ongoing conspiracy surrounding Celina's war-mongering and vendetta against Cadogen house continues to build nicely as does Merit's integration into vampire life and her role as Sentinel.

In terms of the other secondary characters, Mallory and Catcher annoy me no end. Mallory has a bad habit of taking her frustration with her magical abilities out on Merit and runs to Catcher when she doesn't get her own way in an argument (hello, how old are you?). Catcher comes across as a bullying jerk and it is not at all surprising that Merit doesn't trust him enough to tell him about her "little vampire problem". Luc and Lindsey, in contrast, are great and their snarky bickering more than makes up for Mallory and Catcher's passive/aggressive nonsense. To be honest, as neither Mallory nor Catcher made a positive impression on me in book #1, the new direction Merit's relationship takes with them does not bother me in the slightest.

All in all, this series is growing on me and I hope that it continues to improve.

Second in the Chicagoland Vampires series and I have to say that I didn't like this one near as much as the first. The action really seems to start in this one 250 pages in. Merit is having issues with her change to vampirism and keeps referring to keep the vampire under control. That part got really old really quick. Her BFF Mallory learns that she has sorceress powers and begins her training for that. Merit and Mallory have a fall out over Merit's dating life or lack there of. As noted 3/4 of the way through the book the action finally begins to start. We learn that Celina the bad woman from the first is back in Chicago and stirring up trouble again. Series still has potential in my eyes but more like this and I wouldn't continue.

Ever had one of those series that had all the wrong things to it, yet grabbed you and wouldn't let you go? This series has done that to me. I am not proud to say I'm listening to these books, but hey, they're brainless entertainment while I drive to and from work.Criticisms of this one: Why is EVERYONE hot in this world? She never sees anyone who isn't average or ugly. Even the mayor is described as handsome. UGH! Find an average person at some point, girl.Narrator has that dratted sibilant S as she reads and it distracts. Houssse. Vampsss. Annoying enough that I want another narrator, but I survive.Story had a few unique twists. The bad girl from the previous book shows up and had the undercurrent of stress on everyone. Sometimes, I shake my head at the stupid things the main character does. I think she has more brain dead moments than undead moments at times.Oh and the big thing mentioned in the blurb, the Raves, are a secondary plot that barely effects the novel. Almost like it's an after thought, other than it triggers the primary plot. So again we sit on meh, but damn I got to get the third book now.

Celina is causing problems again for our girl Merit.Merit, Mallory, Catcher, Ethan and Morgan are back to save Chicago. Merit re-visits her past by attending a formal party with Ethan, her father, and her ex-boyfriend.
She is forced ( but liking it) to date Mallory a navarre's new master. This book has everything, I really enjoyed reading it and will re-read it.

Merit is back standing sentinel for house Cadogan. Torn between Morgan of House Nararre and her Master Eric Sullivan.Merit has a secret, she seems to have not fully integrated into a vampire, in fact the vampire seems to be a separate part of her that is aching to come out but what will happen once she does? This book was a little slower to develop than the first one but the characters and emotions are getting deeper and more developed. I really appreciate the struggles that some of the characters are dealing with learning of their new natures. It rings very true and helps pull you into the story. The political maneuverings in this book get a little deeper and more twisted. Merit also may need to face her secret if she is going to defeat some of the enemies coming after her house. All in all a solid book that gives you enough of the backstory that you wouldn't feel adrift if you hadn't read the first one.

I started re-reading this series in preparation for the newest release. I was so far behind I just decided to start at the beginning. I read this one A LONG TIME ago so this review will be short and sweet.

I love Catcher, Ethan, Merit, and Mallory. I love the sexual tension between Merit and Ethan: it's very well done.

I think this book has a straightforward excellent plot as well.

This sequel is huge improvement on the first book and only gets better from beginning to end. Most of my grievances with the first book were addressed, and my original suspicion of Morgan has been identified by Merit in this one so I'm a happy bunny. The cliff-hanger has me eager for the next instalment. I'm so glad I don't have long to wait for it.

Just finished reading this book - most of it in one sitting. It just grabbed my attention and didn't let go. While there is a bit of a mystery in this book, it's not the central focus really; the continued adjustment of Merit to her new life and Mallory to hers takes precedent. Each of the characters grow quite a bit in this second book, and while I really don't like the hints of conflict between Merit and Mallory, I'm going to hope for the best, because I really think they have a great friendship. The banter throughout the book is great, and a few chapter titles made me chuckle. I thought Ethan an ass in the first book (although hot), but now I've warmed to him a bit more (also - still hot), now that there are hints of humanity about him.

All said, it's a fast faced, exciting read and I'm looking forward to book 3.

Though it was a fun read, I didn't think it had the same appeal as the first one. I was kind of angry with Merit to tell you the truth. She lashes out at everybody through out the book, even Mallory. Mallory! Although it was a sad thing to happen to them, I really liked their last dialogue..it made me wish everything good for them and for their friendship. Ethan is so totally getting to me being his sexy self all the time and then showing his weakness to Merit. Wish I could see more of Catcher and Chuck, but I'll just read the next one right away. :)

Clever and fun. this whole series is fun and doesn't take it's self too seriously. The writing style has really advanced much over the course of the series but for reading enjoyment I don't think that it really has to become something more than it already is.

The good news: Chloe Neill's Chicagoland Vampires series is staying on my auto-buy list. FRIDAY NIGHT BITES kept me turning pages late into the night, and there were laugh out loud moments galore. When Merit opens the door for sexy vampire master Ethan Sullivan with a cocky, "Age before beauty," I was looking for someone to high-five. Oh, and I was really glad to see Merit the former doctoral candidate finally get jiggy with the library.

The bad news: There are a lot of spinning wheels in FRIDAY NIGHT BITES. It gets off to a slow start. The plot finally thickens when Cadogan house is given an anonymous tip that a reporter is planning a damaging article about vampires, and Merit must draw on her high-society family ties to squelch the story. I enjoyed the twists and turns, and I enjoyed all the sexual tension between Merit and Ethan as they attend fancy parties together. On the other hand, even though a lot happens between those two, no real progress is made in their relationship - dreamy as he is, by the end of the book I was tired of Ethan and his mixed signals. Unfortunately, the same goes for several other major plot points - if anything, it was one step forward and two steps back.

Plus, there are a lot of people who get irrationally angry at Merit in this book. Now, real people do get irrationally angry and make irrational accusations, but when major plot points are pushed forward several times in a novel after normally thoughtful people blow a fuse, make an accusation, and then exit stage right I start to get irritated. There's tension in the friendship as Merit assimilates to vampire life and Mallory grows as a sorceress; that's to be expected. But, really, if they were friends when Merit was an idealistic grad student and Mallory was a corporate shill, they're used to working through some pretty major differences. I expect more from their relationship, which is one of the best parts about the series, than I saw here.

On the whole, FRIDAY NIGHT BITES seemed like a wobbly second installment to a series that is still going great places. I was really excited by the hints we get about the third book, which seems like it will revolve around shifters. And all nitpicking aside, it was a really FUN read, hard to put down and thoroughly enjoyable.

I'm totally addicted to this series. Cheesy? Maybe, but I don't give a s*$t. Too many people with "bright, blue eyes"? Definitely. Sexy vampires? Check. And a sense of fun? I'm sold. I'm so ecstatic that I got the three books in the series from the hold list at the library around the same time--I'm just a little worried how long I'll have to wait once I finish the third one tomorrow! :-(

To those of my friends that are wondering what the heck this series is about, here you go: A grad student from an extremely wealthy Chicago family is attacked in book one and made a vampire. In this world, vampire society is run like college Greek life and (almost) everyone is assigned a house and a master. Merit (the rich now-vampire) is (unsurprisingly) a badass and every dude she comes in contact with is obsessed with her. (sadly cliche but not as annoying as it could be) Oh, except for the ONE hot dude who gets with her best friend/roommate. Merit trains to be even more badass, more people fall for her, and she helps resolve problems for the vamps in Chicago. Fin.

This book had a bit of a mystery feel to it. Merit's Scooby Gang (Mallory - fledgling sorcerer; Catcher - excommunicated sorcerer; Jeff - computer genius and supernatural being; and Ethan - Vampire Master and supreme strategist) gets to investigate the raves. Merit's former high school sweetheart blackmails Merit and Ethan into it. Meanwhile, the shifters are getting ready to meet in Chicago to discuss if they are going to keep their presence from humans hidden or not.The attraction Ethan and Merit feel for each other yet deny at every turn creates an underlying tension to their encounters. When they relax and engage in witty banter it's very entertaining. I admit I'm rooting for them to have a relationship at some point in the series. The ending of this one made me say "Argh!" because it ended on a cliffhanger. I had to get my hands on the third book in the series immediately!

Merit didn't really "wow" me in the first book but her friends did. I am seriously reading this series for the secondary characters so far.Second Date: Oh Ethan, you really are an ass aren't you? This isn't just a hard to get thing. I know it probably comes from when you were actually turned but DUDE you need to get with the times. Merit, I wish they would flush you out more because right now you seem stuck on being mad at Ethan for turning you/wanting to jump Ethans bones because...... (actually I really don't have any idea why you do since he is an ass but that is another thing all together).Third Date: I love bad ass bad guys especially when they are women. I wish Friday Night Bites would have spent more time on the case (making it more interesting)since there wasn't really much character development going on.Audiobook Thoughts: Narrated by Cynthia Holloway /Running Time 11 hrs and 44 minsI thought the audio for Friday Night Bites was pretty good. Cynthia did a great job with the pacing (even when the story didn't) and her voice for Merit was spot on. I do have trouble with the voices for the men in this series so I will be reading the books from this point forward. I am going to try other books narrated by Cynthia though since I am not sure if it is my dislike in the men (so far) in the series or the narration.Final Thought: I know this review sounded like I didn't like the book but that isn't exactly true. I actually LOVED all the side characters but their scenes were too few and far between. I did get the whole series for Christmas so I will be continuing on with the series and hoping to finally catch the Chicagoland Vampires buzz.

I like Merit, she's a rather fun character. Her adventures while she contrinues to try to adjust to life as a vampire I find a lot of fun, and largely refreshing. She's caught up in the politics of the region by vitrue of her connections and power and things are about to get more complicated. She has to try to keep human-vampire relations sweet without appearing weak and try to understand centuries-old political structures without getting killed. I like how the author actually thinks through the implications of being centuries old and how traditions could be much different and how changing a vampire society could take time.Sometimes the romance got in the way of the story for me but otherwise it was a lot of fun.

This is the second book in the Chicagoland Vampires series. The sixth book, Biting Cold, will release in August 2012. Right now the author has 10 books on contract for this series. I enjoyed this book. This series has just been so fun and entertaining. I listened to this on audiobook, which I highly recommend, it was a very well done.Merit is trying to finally get settled as Sentinel of Cadogan House, she's moving into the house and getting into a routine with the other Guards of the house. That is until Ethan needs her services elsewhere. Ethan has heard rumors that someone has leaked a story about vampire raves to the press and Ethan wants Merit to stop it. Then they find the Selena has been released from custody in Europe and is most likely on her way to shake things up. In an effort to make contact with the movers and shakers in Chicago Ethan asks Merit to do the one thing she vowed never to do again, reenter the elite social scene that plagued her childhood.Merit is your typical urban fantasy heroine in some ways but not others. She has unusual powers, she is in the middle of a love triangle of sorts, and she is surrounded by supernatural power figures. The thing that sets Merit apart from other UF heroines is that to unravel the mystery throughout this story she uses something else entirely...her brain and her research skills. It was refreshing to see an urban fantasy heroine that is valued for her intelligence and actually thinks through the consequences of her actions. Don't forget that Merit is also funny, snarky, and wonderful at sarcasm.Merit has also discovered that she is different from other vamps and this leads towards some interesting plot elements towards the end of the story.Ethan, who was kind of stick in the mud in the first book, becomes a much more well developed character in this novel. Ethan actually has a sense of humor at points and even shows some vulnerability throughout the story. He is mostly still a mystery but we are starting to get some hint of who he really is.We don't see a ton of Morgan in this book, he is definitely in the story but when he is he comes across as jealous and angry most of the time. This story focuses much more on Ethan. Mallory is also absent for much of the story; she's gone off to be trained in magic stuff. I missed Mallory and Merit exchanging witty dialogue, but Ethan was there to spice things up a bit.One thing that absolutely irritated me about this book is that Neill sticks to a lot of the same description words throughout. Almost every guy Merit meets is just "so pretty". Seriously there are more pretty guys in this book than any other book I have ever read. The other thing is raised eyebrows; there is a whole dialogue of raised/quirked/lifted eyebrows in this book. I have never before read a book where eyebrows are involved so much in body language.... Okay I just had to get that out, now I feel better.Overall this is a very fun and entertaining read. Merit does a lot of learning in this book and is as entertaining and snarky as in the first book. Merit is dealing with a lot in this book she is under emotional stress and under pressure to solve the mystery behind the rave stories. Ethan is the other big character in this book; we finally get to meet him and learn more about him. There is a great mystery woven throughout the story and it was hard to put the book down. This is a very entertaining read and fans of vampire urban fantasy will find a lot here to love. I would also recommend if you like the Night Huntress series; this series reminds a lot of that one but this series has less romance and more mystery.

My rating: 3.5 starsI didn't really like this book as much as the first one. For one thing, Merit was really annoying towards the second half of the book, pushing away everyone for no particular reason. One or two outbursts are fine, but it becomes really frustrating when all the well-intentioned people are getting alienated and simply because they're against you being unfair to your boyfriend. For another, I hate how cliched this series is getting. It's reminding me more and more of VA with the love triangle and family history of the main character, etc. etc. The bodyguard thing is pretty similar too. And after reading wayyyy too many books with the calm, cool, and collected guy always getting the girl, this one seriously made me roll my eyes. It's about time the sweet and happy-go-lucky guy has an honest chance with the heroine. And lastly, the dialogue was really choppy and weird at times, esp. when Merit pulls the whole "I'm Sentinel, move back or else" act. I hated the way she's totally against Ethan changing her against her will in one scene, and the next, she's going on and on and on about how Ethan's her master, leige, boss, etc. etc. and she'll do anything to protect him, blah blah blah. But other than that, the plot was very interesting. Again, a bit lacking in the originality area, but if you really really love vampire romances and "Some Girls Bite", this book won't disappoint too much.

Merit might be a new vampire, but she is a high profile one. She is (was?) part of an important human family, and she is The Sentinel for her vampire house. She has responsibilities heaped on her shoulders despite the fact she hasn't been at the whole undead thing for very long.Ethan Sullivan, her master and object of her lust, decides she can use her human family connections to further her vampire family connections. (Sounds confusing, but it isn't!) The bonus of all this is that when Merit goes off to a function to connect with her dear old dad - Ethan tags along. Time they spend together is time well spent, if you ask me. They are as hot and chemistry-laden as ever - but alas, also as stubborn as ever. That combination makes them together a mixed bag of sexual tension and general hilariousness. I love their dynamic - even though they aren't even "together." Imagine the fireworks and heart palpitations that will arise when they ARE together (believe me, I have). Anyway...just saying. The books are worth reading for them alone.Luckily, they don't run the whole circus. Merit's best friend Mallory and her boyfriend Catcher are always up to add entertainment value to the stories...and of course, there is Morgan. Merit's other love interest - even though she is doing it for political gain. He is a nice guy, and I feel sorry for him. Mostly I just feel sorry that I should like him more than I do but...nope. Sorry. He doesn't do anything for me.Anyway - once again, this book has it all. Action, angst, humor and a fantastic supernatural world. Pick this series up, you won't regret it!

***May Contain Spoilers***I always find it a shame when a book that I love has a sequel and I don't find the sequel to be as good as the first. If you will recall I reviewed the first book in the series, "Good Girls Bite", and in my review I pretty much praised everything about it. I loved that Merit was so kick-butt, I loved all of the secondary characters (which I typically loath), and I just loved the world that Chloe Neill created. But this book? It wasn't the worst sequel I have read by any means (as you will see I did rate it 3.5/5), but it did fall flat for me. I feel like Merit really lost herself in this book mainly because of a boy (I felt similarly about Dante Valentine in Lilith Saint Crow's Dante Valentine series). I would have been okay with Merit and the fact that she seemed to only have eyes for Ethan had she been honest about it. But she wasn't. Whenever anyone would ask her, "Do you have feelings for Ethan", she would automatically reply with "NO!" and then clam up. Or even when she would think something along those lines, she would convince herself that she was wrong or just being silly. Here is a secret Merit... You really, really, really like Ethan. Accept it. But because she was unable to accept this fact, she just was all confused throughout the book and really missed out on some great opportunities (ie. in the Morgan department and whatnot). Also, the secondary characters that we were introduced to in "Good Girls Bite"? Anyone recall Mallory? Morgan? Jeff? Catcher? Her grandpa? Well, I just felt that they barely played a role in this book whatsoever. And I really missed them. I felt these characters really brought a lot of humor to the first book, but because they did not play all that large of a roll in this book, that humor that I had expected was pretty non-existent and I almost found the book to be too serious. All in all, as mentioned, it wasn't terrible by any means. I just hope that in the next book in the series, "Twice Bitten", that Merit is a lot more honest with both herself and the secondary characters.

***Spoilers Ahoy***As soon as Merit said yes to Ethan I lost all respect for her as a character. I don't understand what illness of the mind the author contracted midway through this book but Morgan was a much better character and then suddenly he does a complete 180 and Merit decides she is yet another boring heroine who has to fall for the masterful vampire who turned her.Overall this wasn't half as good as the first book even ignoring how much I dislike Ethan and Merit's attraction to him.
