About this audiobook

Merit, Chicago's newest vampire, is learning how to play well with others. Other supernaturals, that is. Shapeshifters from across the country are convening in the Windy City, and as a gesture of peace, Master vampire Ethan Sullivan has offered their leader a very special bodyguard: Merit. Merit is supposed to protect the Alpha, Gabriel Keene-and to spy for the vamps while she's at it. Oh, and luckily Ethan's offering some steamy one-on-one combat training sessions to help her prepare for the mission.

Merit must accept the assignment even though she knows that she'll probably regret it. And she's not wrong. Someone is gunning for Gabriel Keene, and Merit soon finds herself in the line of fire. She'll need all the help she can get to track down the would-be assassin, but everywhere she turns, there are rising tensions between supernaturals-not least between her and a certain centuries-old green-eyed Master vampire.

Another amazing book in the Chicago Vampire’s series. It’s chalk full of action and excitement. The characters are so diverse, multidimensional, all with their own distinct personalities, full of life.

I really recommend this series to anyone who loves paranormal books. I am enjoying this series so much. It got my attention from book one and I’m still enjoying it. Actually I’m not getting much else done lol, but I don’t mind, I just don’t want this series to end.

I don’t know why, but often for me when I read a really long series I can loose interest. Even when it’s really good. I don’t understand why. However this series is quite long, yet I can’t get enough of it. I’m so thankful for all the wonderful Authors who write and share their beautiful gift with us. For me it’s my go to for unwinding, destressing and sometimes just being able to loose myself in a good book. Thank you.

Twice Bitten takes a lot of twists and turns and kept me on my toes! I started out this book loving Ethan--middle of the book I was ticked at Ethan--end of the book I found myself softening to Ethan. I don't want to give anything away, but the complex relationship between Merit and Ethan has its ups and downs. Lacey, Ethan's former flame, also makes an appearance to shake up things. The shifters play a huge role in this book. I really liked getting to know head honcho, Gabriel Keene. Gabriel has a gift for seeing bits of the future. He gives Merit a glimpse a of a startling prophecy that ties her to Gabriel's unborn child. Merit kicks butt in this book, and finds herself in some situations that will test her immortality.Twice Bitten is an excellent read, and my favorite book in this series so far.

I really love Merit as a protagonist in this series, love the backdrop of Chicago, and love Ethan, the crazy protective and must-be-in-charge Master of the vampire house. These were super enjoyable and fun reads.

This book puts the shifters into play in Chicago. Ethan wants an alliance with them and the Alpha puts it to a vote with all the shifters in North America. They are voting to either come out like the vampires or retreat to Alaska to wait things out. To sweeten the deal Ethan offers Merit as a bodyguard to help with site security on the vote. But not everyone wants to side with the vampires and there are pack politics at play. This book picks up right after book two and all the action happens over just a few days. A fast paced fun light read.

The series is growing on me with each installment and now I can't stop reading them despite the occasional annoying element and the fact that Cynthia Holloway's narration is not the best.

The developments in Ethan and Merit's relationship are what makes this a worthwhile read. Yes, Ethan is an arrogant jerk but I can't help loving him anyway and it seems neither can Merit. Neill obviously invests a great deal of effort into building the tension between these two characters and to a large extent this is what keeps me interested. For this reason, the twists and turns in their relationship are not surprising and even endear them to me - Ethan is a commitment phobe who fears losing control of his well ordered life while Merit is wary of giving her heart only to have it trampled on - again!

The plot changes direction with new characters and a new conflict. The mystery surrounding the attempted assassination of Gabriel Keene, the leader of the shifters, has potential but the identity of the villain is somewhat obvious and his motivation doesn't make a lot of sense Adam would have to kill each of his siblings in order to become head of the pack.

The dynamics between the vampires and shifters are very interesting and add an extra layer to the overall story arc. That said, the shifters are not portrayed in the best light. They are similar to shifters in other series with their focus on pack and family loyalty, but they are different in their history of turning tail at the first sign of trouble - this is quite cowardly and when compared to other series, such as Kate Daniels, it is disappointing.

All in all, a solid story and I am eager to continue on to the next book.

Excellent having Merit and the gang back. By "gang" with this series I definitely mean actual characters rather than cardboard characters just there for no real reason. We do get to know more of everyone's backstory, definitely more about the shifters, and as expected I completely loathed Merit's continued "romance" with big house hauncho vampire ("Ethan"?). Great book as well written as first two in series; but, he was particularly an asshole in this one. At the risk of spoiler, Merit should have stuck to her gut feeling a romantic or sexual relationship was a bad idea. I hate to dwell just on that because it was really a minuscule few paragraphs (and I overall enjoyed the book and will be continuing the series). But between that with the resulting angst and the fact that this book is clearly just to move the series along versus a full "story" -- lost a star.

I can't believe I am continuing to listen to this series. It's hooked me. Brainless stuff to listen to while driving.Narrator still has the sibilant S that bugs me.Oh and at the beginning of the book, she seemed to have forgotten how to pronounce a few things. Corrected by disc two.Good things I love: The sarcasm, the wit, the smart alecness of Merit. The play in the books, even if it is a tense situation. And my dear author, you had a wonderful, tension filled book and then... you did what you shouldn't have done. Can't say more without giving away a detail. Also, Why did you make Ethan a Yankee's fan?!?!? UGH!More of the other supernaturals in this book. Jeff comes more to the forefront now, giving the magic users a back seat for a few. Revelations abound regarding super's activities. Okay, so where's book 4?

This was a whirlwind of " who done it" and why. Somebody is trying very hard to kill the head of the shifters and maybe some vamps along with them. The shifters play a huge role in this addition to the series. Will they leave Chicago and hide in the hills or will they stay and fight the foreseen upcoming war ? The tension between them and the vamps, seems never ending. Ethan and Merit struggle to fit together. He is so many years away from his human side and she so new and still so human, there relationship grows, blows and sizzles.
I was not disappointed at all, the story was fast paced and intriguing. I can't wait till the next installment of this series. I see some big changes coming !

I love the shifters and I was so happy to finally meet Gabriel and enjoy him. I just wish we could get his story (how he met his wife, etc) I would also love to see one of the shifters get with a vamp.

Anyway, I liked this one but it's not my favorite of the series. I also wish people would start seeing whats up with Mallory.

I was absolutely loving the first half of this book, although disappointed to see Mallory playing such a small part, then I got mid-way through the book and wanted to put it down and walk away. Ugh! But I pressed on and was happy to do so in the end. A really excellent story, with lots of action. I love these characters and I love seeing how they evolve with each book. I still enjoy the banter between Mal and Merit best, although I like Lindsey quite a bit as well.

Each of these books has a bit of a mystery in them and they're good ones, although this one was a bit easier for me to guess the bad guy. Still a very fun ride and I look forward to book 4.

The best one of the series so far. All that tension between Merit and Ethan from the two previous book resulted in even more tension and then some pretty hot scenes between them. I liked the fact that Mallory and Merit finally made up and we got a lot more action here too. Genious the plotline with the shifters and not Celina again.

Merit is starting to find her feet finally. Don't get me wrong, she still makes a ton of mistakes and I have yet to understand why they say she is so strong when she constantly gets her butt handed to her. It would be great if we could see how she compares to others in her class, not these really old one.

Three books into this series and I STILL don't like the hero. When will we see some redeeming qualities come out of him? So far it's been a whole shitton of too little, too late. And Merit? For all she talks a big talk, she doesn't walk the walk. She needs to get some more backbone, suck it up, and give Ethan a taste of his own medicine, rather than being at his beck and call.

Repetition is still repetitive, clothes descriptions still happen at the introduction of every single character in any given scene, but I've begun skimming giant chunks of text, so I think that bumped the rating for this up since I wasn't bored to tears.

In any other instance, I'd flounce the series because I just am not that interested in what happens to either of these characters (now, Catcher and Mallory? That's a different story. Can we please have a book about them?), but the flailing over the end of book 4 has me curious, so on I trudge.

I absolutely loved this book! I seriously did not want to put it down. I had been awhile since I had read the last one but it didnt take long for me to get back into the groove of Chicagoland. In book 3 we get more a romance brewing between Ethan and Merit. In the beginning I wasnt a fan of them being together, it just seemed so typical, I was rooting for Morgan to sweep her off her feet. But I have to say that this book really made me an Ethan fan, even with his jerk like tendencies. But I'm still holding out that maybe some other knight and shining armor will sweep Merit off her feet- vampire or otherwise. So all while Merit is having to deal with the ever brooding Ethan, she gets caught up with a few shifters. She and Ethan are working to form an alliance between shifters and vamps. But not many supes are ready for such a historical change, so all hell breaks loose! There is ton of action in this book, and all vividly written. It was fantastic to see Merit really kick butt in this one. I love Merit! She's just a great character for all types of women. She's smart, independent, not dependent on some guy, and can kick some serious butt!

I read a few reviews of TWICE BITTEN before I actually bought the book, and I have to say...it was a mistake. I saw a few spoilers, and the spoilers made me think I might hate the book. I've really enjoyed the Chicagoland Vampire series, and I was afraid of being disappointed, so I put off reading TWICE BITTEN for weeks.

So here's my first piece of advice for fans of the series: decide for yourself. I knew the bare bones of what would happen between Merit and Ethan, and I knew how other readers felt about it, and I figured I'd react similarly. I didn't.

The main action plot here revolves around ConPack - a national meeting of shifters. There's trouble brewing, anti-vampire sentiment is on the rise, and the shifters have to decide whether they want to hang around and maybe get wrapped up in the conflict or retreat to their stronghold in Alaska. Ethan wants to secure shifter support, and Merit does her best to help him achieve his goal.

From the beginning, the Chicagoland series has picked up a lot of pretty generic paranormal plot devices and managed to make them new and fun again. Starting with, you know, "Confused yet very powerful supernatural newbie has a conflicted relationship with ultra hot vampire Master." So I wasn't surprised to see shifters, and shifter culture, conform to the current norms of the genre. They're hot-tempered, the perfect foil for vampire coldness, they prefer family-oriented potluck parties to vampire-style formal catering, they ride motorcycles and hang out in seedy bars. No surprises. The problem is, there's nothing fresh and fun here. I couldn't tell the shifters apart; they all had the same personality, carbon-copied into multiple characters.

The problem may be that TWICE BITTEN focuses too heavily on the relationship between Merit and Ethan. Merit and Ethan are stuck in their own little world and everything outside of it seems grey and distant...including the main driving action plot of the book. There's a big twist ending to the shifter plot, but when I read it I had no reaction at all. Just "OK, so that's what happened, whatever." I didn't care enough to be surprised, I wasn't invested enough to feel betrayed.

Here's what I think (beware spoilers): Ethan's behavior didn't bother me as much as I expected it to, but things need to change if I'm going to root for them as a couple. Merit needs to get out a little more. She needs to have a priority other than being the best little helper Ethan can have. Her whole world revolves around him, and that's unhealthy. At one point, a paparazzo asks her if she's heard about a group of vampires who were murdered in Georgia, and Merit says, nope, hadn't heard. I wasn't surprised. Her world has shrunk to the size of Cadogan House, and she doesn't pay attention to anything that happens outside Chicago's city limits. And number two? Ethan needs some serious competition. Someone needs to walk into Merit's life who's as gorgeous, as charismatic, as challenging as Ethan is. Right now he's winning by default, and that's not sexy.

I loved and hated this book. The progress of Ethan and Merit was awesome and then Ethan had to be a stupid vamp/boy and ruin it! Oh Ms. Neill please quit toying with my heart and throw me a bone! Merit is still learning, but finding that maybe, just maybe, she's not wrong for the job of Sentinel and that there's a hope for herself and Ethan. She's also drawn into shifter politics. Things are not going well for a lot of people and she seems to be a focus for a lot of what's going on. Partially because people underestimate her and assume as a new vampire she wouldn't understand, but she's powerful and is begining to realise it.I liked it, maybe not as much as book 1, but still I want to keep reading. Merit in my minds eye doesn't look like the cover, she looks better. (also, dear cover photographer, Cavalry Sabre=/= Katana) I can't wait to see what happens next. Things are complicated in her life but she's managing to get places and come to terms with her present life.

This is the third book in the Chicagoland Vampires series and my favorite so far. This book had a more solid plot than previous books and things escalate both between Ethan and Merit and between the shapeshifters and the vampires. Definitely a must read if you enjoyed the first couple books of this series.I listed to this on audiobook and the audiobooks for this series are incredibly well done. This is one of those series that I think sounds even better than it would read; the narrator just does such a wonderful job.Shapeshifters are meeting in the Windy City and they meet to decide if they will return to their homeland or stay for the oncoming supernatural war. Ethan lends out Merit's services as a bodyguard to the shapeshifter's leader Gabriel-Keene. As the time to the Shapeshifter Convocation draws closer it becomes clear that someone has put a hit out on Gabriel. Merit continually finds herself in the line of fire. Not only that but she is trying to navigate treacherous politics between the shapeshifters and vamps while also doing one on one training sessions with Ethan to try to improve her lackluster sparring skills. This was the best book in this series so far. Things are really building to a climax in multiple ways. The shapeshifters are on the edge of either staying of fleeing as war approaches the supernatural community and the way they choose will tip the balance one way or the other. The tension between Merit and Ethan is constantly building and it was absolutely killing me to know what would happen between them. Merit is starting to understand her own powers and finally figuring out way to break down the wall she keeps hitting when she tries to spar.Romance is a huge driver in this story. The tension between Merit and Ethan is absolutely sizzling. This is one of those books where I loved Ethan and then I hated him. Seriously he jerks Merit around so much; yet he does it in a strangely understandable way. The only other series I can think of that has had me as emotionally involved as this one is the Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost. I swear there were parts of this book where I was holding my breath to see what would happen. Beyond that a lot of other neat stuff happens in this book. Lots of action in this one, Merit finds herself in a number of combat situations and performs admirably. The addition of the shapeshifters raised the stakes and ratcheted up the tension in this book, really driving the plot forward. So much depending on their decision to stay or leave. I continue to love the fun and witty banter between all of these wonderful characters. The story wraps up well, but will have people a bit frustrated I am sure. I am very eager to see where both the building-war and the Merit-Ethan thing ends up going. I am dying to read Hard Bitten now. I was a little disappointed that Mallory wasn't in the story more, she always adds a lot of fun. Hopefully we will see her more in future installments.Overall the best book in this series, absolutely stellar. If you liked the first few books in this series you'll love this one. Tons of action, building tension between the shifters and vamps, and lots of Ethan-Merit moments. This was a super engaging and fun read. Highly recommended to fans of urban fantasy. Reminds a bit of the Night Huntress series; so if you like that series I think you will love this one as well.

I didn't have any hopes for this book, mostly because I simply hated the previous book and by the end of Friday Night Bites, I was hating on pretty every character, esp. the main ones. But this book was surprisingly pretty good. The problems I had with the prequel, like Merit being too weak when it comes to Ethan and blowing up at people when she herself was in the wrong, and Ethan being way too annoying with his "morals", pretty much disappeared in this book. There were some pretty good twists and turns and the dialogue was quite witty. I'm really looking forward to Hard Bitten, hope these positive feelings for CVL continue in the next book.

Just thinking about this book....I want to pick it up and reread it. That slow build up between Merit and Ethan that I talked about in my first two reviews? (Check them out here and here.)Yeah. All I'm going to say is...WORTH. THE. WAIT. All kinds of hot. By the time some (I repeat: some) of the walls come down - I was so emotionally invested in their relationship that I about melted into a puddle of joy when progress was finally made. (Don't expect a totally happy ending though...just saying.)Anyway, besides the hotness...this was also the best so far as far as the action goes. Instead of a ton of vampire drama (although there is still that, of course)...we add in shifter drama. Merit and Ethan get in way over their heads and it is both exhilarating and hilarious to see them fight their way through the novel. This is far and away my favorite of the series thus far, and if Neill keeps getting better and better, this is going to be one of the best paranormal series out there! (Well, it already is actually - but I needed to make a dramatic statement to get my point across.)Do yourself a favor and check this series out. If you like paranormal novels, have ever considered liking paranormal novels, or heck...if you know how to read - you will fall in love with these characters.

***Contains Spoilers***This book is frustrating to say the least- I don't know if I have ever so mentally and emotionally strained while reading a book I did while reading this. Whenever I became truly elated with what was happening between them Chloe would rip my heart out and stomp on it, leading me to throw my book across the room out of frustration and heartbreak. And I am further frustrated because while I would love to see Merit and Ethan together mainly because they would be a super powerful couple, I am still not exactly sure how I feel about Ethan. I understand that his house has to be a big concern to him, but exactly how big? Can he not be selfish every once and a while and go after what he truly wants? Does he always have to make sacrifices? Also, I am somewhat wary of their relationship because what would stop it from ending like Ethan and Lacey's did (especially taking into consideration that it does seem like Merit is going to be made into a Master, like Lacey was, which will eventually separate her and Ethan as their have to look after their respective houses)? Despite my frustrations I do believe that this book is exceptionally better than the second book in the series, "Friday Night Bites", however not as good as the first book in the series, "Some Girl's Bite".I was really glad to see Jeff play a larger role in this book than in the previous ones- I find him to hands down be the most intriguing character (I wanna know what he shifts into!). I think that in this book he became so much more than the quirky/ nerdy boy that we saw in the earlier books- he really pulls out his bad-ass, and dare I say, almost dangerous-bad-boy side. I also think that Fallon is a pretty bad-ass (I suppose that being in the female child in a family of boys would force her to become pretty bad-ass) and intriguing character, I can't wait to see how her and Jeff's relationship develops.

I am really enjoying this series. The relationship between Ethan and Merit is complicated and intriguing. It seems much of the tension between the two is internally driven rather than due to circumstance. The only negative comment I would have about this series is the snarkiness of the characters. It gets a little old after a while. Otherwise, looking forward to what is ahead for Merit and Ethan.

This third book in the Chicagoland Vampires is just as fresh as the first two. Merit, a vampire for less than three months, was made Sentinel of Cadogan House due to her strength and speed, as well as her ability to feel magic and resist glamour. We deal with shifters in this book as Merit and Ethan are requested by Gabriel, the Apex of the North American Central Pack, to act as security at a meeting of four packs. The meeting will determine if the shifters stay where they are and risk being pulled into a war, or retreat to their home base in Alaska. Most aren’t happy to have vampires included in their business. To the vampires, an alliance with the shifters would be a big deal for what they fear is coming. The relationship also heats up between Merit and Ethan, with some surprising results. The book contains a great deal of action and emotion and we’re left with a larger playing field for possibilities in storyline with the next book.I love the characters and the storyline. Merit is destined to someday be a Master of her own House, but today she’s got a lot to learn about fighting, politics, PR and alliances.
