About this audiobook

Alwych, Connecticut, is the stereotypical old money Connecticut beach town. And Chapin Waring is the worst thing that ever happened to this town. She was a well turned-out debutante from one of the richest families in Alwych until thirty years ago when the young debutante, destined to have the right life, was revealed to a bank robber and a murderer. She disappeared, never to be heard from again. But Alwych has never forgotten her, or let her friends and family forget. So when Chapin turns up dead, it’s baffling. To learn why she died, Gregor Demarkian is brought in to finally solve the mysteries surrounding Chapin Waring. Not just how and why she died, but where she’d been and what happened thirty years ago.

Author

Jane Haddam

Jane Haddam (1951–2019) was an American author of mysteries. Born Orania Papazoglou, she worked as a college professor and magazine editor before publishing her Edgar Award–nominated first novel, Sweet, Savage Death, in 1984. This mystery introduced Patience McKenna, a sleuthing scribe who would go on to appear in four more books, including Wicked, Loving Murder (1985) and Rich, Radiant Slaughter (1988).   Not a Creature Was Stirring (1990) introduced Haddam’s best-known character, former FBI agent Gregor Demarkian. The series spans more than twenty novels, many of them holiday-themed, including Murder Superior (1993), Fountain of Death (1995), and Wanting Sheila Dead (2005). Haddam’s later novels include Blood in the Water (2012) and Hearts of Sand (2013).

As always, Gregor Dimarkian's comic private life brackets a dark story full of twists and turns & credible characters, good and bad. Dimarkian's unlikely speed at arriving at a solution is forgivable because we are so entertained by the process.

I always read every Gregor Demarkian mystery right away. They are slow, befuddling sagas that ring true about the complicated relationships and identities of people whose backgrounds and histories determine their lives. And they are beautifully written.

This one describes a community that is just like one where I lived for four years in Connecticut. A long-ago murder, a car crash, and a Fourth of July parade.

This time Gregor is asked to consult on a murder case in Connecticut that has ties going back 30 years. I found the case to be a little repetitious as Gregor kept explaining it to everyone. He methodically ticked off the suspects and showed the small town sheriff how not to take things for granted. The most interesting thing about Gregor is his wife, Bennis, and their new life and home.

Armenian-American consulting detective Gregor Demarkian is off to Alwych, Connecticut from Philadelphia to investigate the murder of a woman who, 30 years ago, was suspected of committing a series of bank robberies in which two people were killed. Then Chapin Waring disappeared. She is found dead in the beach home that she grew up in, which has not been occupied for many years, and is still owned by her and her three sisters. The victim was just a teenager when she allegedly robbed the banks – and the young man who was her partner in crime was later killed in a car accident. Demarkian believes there is a short list of suspects – the people who were in Chapin’s clique. Most of them are remarkably successful adults: a do-good doctor, a by-the-books Wall-Street lawyer, a US Congresswoman, etc. As he seeks the truth about what happened to Chapin Waring, Demarkian unleashes a torrent of emotions. Then there’s another murder. It’s been more than a decade since I last read one of the Gregor Demarkian – and, for the life of me, I can’t figure out why I haven’t read more. The books are quick reads, with complex plots and great continuing characters. In catching up with these characters, -- Bennis, Father Tibor, the Ararat restaurant and Cavanaugh Street specifically -- I find myself astonished that I was able to re-enter their world without missing a beat.
