About this audiobook

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Ever After of Ella and Micha comes a story of scars, courage, and new possibilities . . .

Luke Price's life has always been about order, control, and acting tough on the outside. For Luke, meaningless relationships are a distraction-a way to tune out the twisted memories of his childhood. He desperately wishes he could forget his past, but it haunts him no matter what he does.

Violet Hayes has had a rough life. When she was young, she was left with no family and the memory of her parents' unsolved murders. She grew up in foster homes, living with irresponsible parents, drugs, and neglect, and trying to fight the painful memories of the night her parents were taken from her. But it's hard to forget when she never got closure-and she can't stop dreaming about what happened that tragic night. To make it through life, she keeps her distance from everyone and never allows herself to feel anything.

Then Violet meets Luke. The two clash instantly, yet they can't seem to stay away from each other. Although they fight it, they both start to open up and feel things they've never felt before. They discover just how similar they are. But they also discover something else: The past always catches up with you . . .

I received an ARC from the publisher of The Destiny of Violet & Luke through the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program in exchange for an honest review.I would say that this book was an extreme disappointment, except that it wasn't. It was exactly what I expected from Sorensen. Her stories are extremely formulaic--from the swirling script font choice for the titles to the characters being horribly broken with abusive pasts to the plotless stories where you're waiting for the inevitable coupling followed by some "cliffhanger" ending where they are torn apart or just the regular issues with things like grammar and spelling. (As this was one that was not self-published, I had hoped that the grammar would be better. That it wasn't was actually a disappointment.) When it comes to sticking to her formula, Sorensen doesn't disappoint. Unfortunately, her choice to write such formulaic stories is a disappointment because I think that Sorensen could actually write a really good story if she put a little more effort into it.There's nothing truly special about this book or this couple. Yes, they are broken, but this is not any different from any other couple she writes about. The stigmatized virginal girl and misunderstood oversexed boy have been the leads in her Ella and Micha & Callie and Kayden books. The boy having a substance abuse issue isn't all that unusual, nor is the girl engaging in self-destructive/parasuicidal behaviors and lying to those close to her. I could easily change the names of the characters to those of her other books and have the same stories that I've already read by her. There's not really any respect for the issues that Luke and Violet suffer from. They're just there to help advance the idea of these characters being poor unfortunate souls. The relationship and the attraction feels forced. It seems that she was so determined to hook these characters up that she didn't actually feel the need to describe how these feelings were changing. Their love story needed a little more work, as did the character development. But, again, this is not any different from every other book of hers that I have read. There were no true surprises or developments in any other aspect of the story. The ending issue? It wasn't something that threw anyone who had been paying attention for most of the book. The only "shocker" is that it drove them apart. It didn't really change anything within their relationship and they had answers to some of their questions, but it shouldn't have driven them apart. It seemed that the only reason that it did was that this would allow Sorensen to write yet another book about these characters; a book that will probably be almost exactly like this. But here's the completely wackadoodle part of all of this: I still want to know what happens with them. The book may not be special and may be exactly what I've read before. The characters may just be the same ones she's written over and over, but I want to know what happens to them. And THAT is why the book is getting a two-star rating instead of a one-star one. Sorensen has enough writing talent and story-telling skills that even with all this craptasticness I still want to discover what happens to these two broken souls.

This is my first book by this author and I thought the writing was pretty good. Unfortunately the story is very dark. Luke and Violet live depressingly sad, parallel lives. Traumatic events in their childhoods have made both of them grow up into dysfunctional young adults who spend an enormous amount of the book thinking about how horrible their lives are. Luke and Violet meet in college, but considering their situations and debilitating hang-ups, it was hard to believe they had enough optimism to get there. Luke, who claims the need to control, drinks 24/7 and treats girls like they are disposable, while Violet is moody, snippy and avoids any kind of social interactions. Even though I didn't particularly like Luke and Violet, I was interested in reading about them. Seeing Violet respond to Luke’s attention was exciting. She craves an adrenalin rush, and being with Luke gives her this. There are some witty, intense and sexy scenes that spiked my interest, but long segments of sad and unnecessary backstory kept pushing me out of the story. After a while, I skipped over them. The book ends with a cliffhanger, leaving us to wonder how or if the relationship between Luke and her can continue. Though I’m curious about Luke and Violet’s final destiny, I’m pretty sure I won’t pick up the next book. I like me some angst in a story, but this was too dark for me. I received an ARC from the publisher.

Thanks to Librarything for a free book from Early Reviewers, in exchange for a review. Tumultuous book.....to say the least. I am all for dark romances but what are the chances of this as a reality? I like to get lost in a book but the author let's us know straightaway that this just can't end well. Then the cliffhanger................My entertainment was lost with that, and then at the end of my copy it gives a peek at Callie and Cayden? Why not a peek at the next book.. Blah. The writing was good but I hate being set up. My enjoyment factor is what I base my reviews on so three stars.

Really enjoyed violet and luke from her literally falling on him to the very end. The writing was good, story, romance and even humor were great! Is it like a lot of other romances? Yes.. but this story was great anyway. They both were damaged people who found love in eachother :)

Picking up more or less where The Redemption of Callie and Kayden this book pairs Luke and Callies little know roommate. Like the rest of the characters in this series Violet has a violent and traumatic history and we get more of the details of Lukes equally messed up history. This novel fits the typical pattern of this genre. These books aren't fine literature but I enjoyed it for what it was and wasn't expecting anything more out of it. These books are addictive and I will be reading the next one because i liked the writing and want to see how the story plays out and not just because I feel like I need to finish a series just because I'm already 3 books in.

I wanted to like this. I liked Callie and Kayden and really wanted Luke's book to be something special. I could be in the minority here but the awful circumstances of both of these kids just made me tired. I could have lost the first 40% and still got the same story. I didn't really get interested in they play cards at about 50%. It was just too much..everything awful that could happen to a teenager. In order to be together these two sad characters need to come to terms with murder, drug use and distribution, abandonment, poverty, homelessness, alcoholism, suicide, the foster care system and so much more. There needs to be something inherently likable about the characters and their attraction for each other to get the reader on board, rooting for them to be together and overcome all the noise to get that sweet happy for now/everafteralways/ending. I didn't find anything about Luke or Violet that made me care enough to see how they end up except pity.

For the love of sweet baby Kermit. I DONUT KNOW! I don't know why I keep reading this genre because I swear I was never this stupid in my late teens, early twenties. Damaged boy meets damaged girl. They fight against their feelings. They're too damaged to carry on like normal couples because their matchy, matchy, dark and twisty 30-piece of emo baggage is not going to let them trust...or maybe their love can save them. Bellhop moment, anyone? They can't help it...they are in LOOOVE. The deepest, sweetest loooove on the planet, and universe, and everything. They get together anyway. Big plot twist. They misunderstand. They cant work through it even though they are the epitome of the deepest love of all time. They breakup. They get back together because of their epic loooove. The End.No, it didn't end this way albeit, the formula is still there but with the addition of a big, fat cliffhanger that made me hurl my book (sorry to my Girlbrarians. It didn't hurt it)Granted, this author is an addictive read. Addictive like crack-filled donuts. Although, I feel like I need to read some doorstop-sized classic, a la Dumas, or DF Wallace to get my brain back to critical thinking and stirring grey matter all smart and proper-like. Its not a bad book, per say, but I think I'm done with this genre for a while...at least until I see the next interesting cover or intriguing summary to suck me in. Damnit. Like I don't have a billion books in my TBR pile.

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie TalesQuick & Dirty: A very enjoyable read and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a steamy new adult romance.Opening Sentence: I hate running, but it always seems like I’m doing it.The Review:Violet Hayes doesn’t let people into her life. At the age of six her parents were brutally murdered while she was hiding in the other room. The murderer’s were never caught and Violet has had to live with the memories of that horrible night her whole life. She went from one foster family to the next and suffice to say she did not have a good childhood. She is now in college and working really hard to make things better for herself. But she knows that she is still messed up and she doesn’t let people close to her because in the end everyone always lets her down. Then she meets Luke and he seems almost as aloof as she is. He is gorgeous and for the first time in her life Violet actually wants to get to know someone better.Luke Price has to have control over everything in his life. He grew up without a father and his mother always made him do horrible things like shoot her up with heroine when he was only eight years old. His childhood memories still haunt him to this day and to drown them out he uses alcohol and meaningless sex. When he meets Violet he is drawn to her in a way that is completely new to him. He finds himself opening up to someone for the first time and it is both scary and thrilling at the same time. But the past always has a way of catching up to you and both Luke and Violet have a past full of heartache and pain.Violet is a girl you don’t want to mess with. Sure she is built small, but she has an attitude full of fire and determination. She keeps her distance from everyone to protect herself from ever getting hurt again. There have been very few people in her life that have shown her kindness and she hates feeling like she owes anyone anything, so she likes it that way. She puts on a tough front but underneath it all she is a very vulnerable girl that doesn’t know what she wants. I loved Violet and found that I really respected her. She went through things that no one should ever have to and has come out broken yet strong at the same time. Being inside her head was insightful and I really enjoyed it.Luke is just one of those guys that you can’t help but love. He is obviously messed up, but there is still hope that he can redeem himself. Not only is he totally sexy, but he is also a really sweet guy, at least when it comes to Violet he is. He is full of confidence and has always known what he wanted, but when he meets Violet all of his control and plans go out the window. It was interesting to watch him break out of his shell that he has in place for so long, and see him start to truly feel for the first time. He was such a dynamic character and I loved reading his story. This was a great book full of sexy times, angst, and heartache. My favorite part about it was the characters. They are people that seem completely unlikable because of their attitudes, but I honestly loved them both so much. Sorensen did a great job making me care about the characters, which in turn drew out my emotions. Violet and Luke’s relationship was full of drama and sexual tension which was very entertaining. The only thing that I didn’t really love about this story was the ending. I totally knew what was coming and I was a little disappointed that it ended where it did. There is another book and I am very glad because I can’t wait to read more of Violet and Luke’s story. This is a part of the Coincidence series, but this is the only one I have read from the series, and it is just fine as a standalone. This has been my favorite book by Sorensen so far. Overall, this was a very enjoyable read and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a steamy new adult romance.Notable Scene:Taking my new teddy bear and the flashlight I keep in my nightstand drawer, I tiptoe down the stairs. I pause at the bottom, staring at the window in the living room where I can see showers of red and silver sparks glittering sky. It’s so pretty and I stop at the bottom of the stairs to get a good look at them. When the colors fade, I turn for the basement door and open it. A lot of the kids I know are afraid of the basement, but mine’s not that bad. My dad even let me paint my favorite flowers on the walls and I get to keep all my toys down here, too.I don’t flip on the light, instead I use my flashlight because I’m not supposed to be out of bed this late at night, but the moon and fireworks shower light through the window. Once I get the flashlight turned on, I skip down the stairs to where my toys are stacked in boxes around the room. There’s also a chair in the dragon or something else with claws. My hand shakes a little as I stand up and turn back toward the room. When I step into it, I feel the wind hit my cheeks. I shine the light around and notice one of the windows is open. I don’t understand why. I didn’t open it and I don’t think it was open when I came down here. What if it was a monster?I sweep the flashlight around the room at all my toys as I start back toward the corner. Then the light lands on something tall… I hear voices. Ones that don’t sound like they belong to a monster, but just people. But that’s what they end up being.Terrible, horrible monsters.FTC Advisory: Forever/Hachette Book Group provided me with a copy of The Destiny of Violet & Luke.
