About this audiobook

As a boy, Raun Kaufman was diagnosed by multiple experts as severely autistic, with an IQ below 30, and destined to spend his life in an institution. Years later, Raun graduated with a degree in biomedical ethics from Brown University and has become a passionate and articulate autism expert and educator with no trace of his former condition.

Thanks to the Son-Rise Program, a revolutionary method created by his parents, Raun experienced a full recovery from autism. In Autism Breakthrough, Raun presents the ground-breaking principles behind the program that helped him and thousands of other families with special children. Parents and educators learn how to enable their children to create meaningful, caring relationships, vastly expand their communications, and to participate successfully in the world.

A very readable and encouraging book. Kaufman is believable in what can be done, given sufficient attentiveness on the part of caretakers. He encourages reassessing our real goal (social interaction) rather than any academic goals, and the importance of developing trust with your child so they are motivated to come out from their protective stims. There is some attention given to the differences between the Son-Rise method and ABA, both in terms of the children's success and the methods used. On the whole, however, it is very a thorough introduction to the Son-Rise approach, which should get more families to at least find out about the method before having to pay for an introductory session. He touches briefly on diet as it relates to autism recovery, primarily referring the reader elsewhere for more information and support.Book contains appendix of empirical research supporting the Son-Rise Program, with lengthy bibliography, an index, and--most useful now--a list of 10 Holiday Hiccups and How To Avoid Them.I will admit that when I read [Parkhurst][[Harmony]] a few years ago, I thought it was about the Son-Rise program, since at that time I only knew of it as a residential program. The method described by Kaufman is one which is applied by parents rather than in a residential treatment center. So, my opinion is still unconfirmed whether [[Harmony]] refers to an earlier version of the method. My child with autistic behaviors is 35. He basically predates all the treatment methods, so never had the advantage of early treatment but has gone thru all kinds of 'alternative' treatments. Part of me would like to try this method, & I've taken note of the website, but another part is sceptical that it will work, that I will have the resources (especially in this covid-restrictive world) to actually carry it out, that my child's blindness will bring in other inhibiting factors that the Son-Rise method can't overcome. I have gotten reminded of cheering on my son's successes and basically giving a muted response to negative behavior (i.e. bed wetting), but have no idea how I would effectively give a muted response when I am in the midst of being bitten. There is also the cost factor. Yes, the Son-Rise program does state they have scholarships but...

I had to read this book for another course. It was very informative and insightful involving the topic of Autism. It provided concrete examples of what parents and teachers can do to help eliminate some of the issues when dealing with Autism. I would definitely recommend this book for a parent in the future if necessary.

While I have never taught any autistic children, nor am I personally involved with any, I have always been interested and amazed by these little geniuses who are “brain blessed” that sadly struggle in the “normal world”(5). With the love and guidance and therapy from amazing people, the children will hopefully one day have extraordinary experiences that are not hindered by over sensory/over processed stimulation. Kaufman offers only his own story, but stories from various children, such as Michelle and Reggie, that really opened my eyes to the similarities, yet differences in worlds. Through his inspirational advice, tips, and encouraging words, Kaufman presents a positive yet realistic text for not just parents of autistic children, but also family members and teachers.

Autism Breakthrough is an absolute must read!!!!In this book you discover the The Son-Rise Program® and how it can change you child's life. The book has he easy to understand explanations and applications. He also writes about some life changing experiences that many have achieved. One aspect I was impressed with this book is Raun's explanation of why leaning the social interaction skills takes a precedent over the math and other of the basic skills taught in to children this period of their life. This program is parent led so parents are empowered to act as facilitators, trainers and managers for their home-based programs. This is a book I recommend for parents, extended family, teachers, para's and therapists.
