About this audiobook

Scandal follows Rose Barclay, young widow of the Duke of Southdown, wherever she goes. It's never her fault, but newspapers love to write about the simple girl from Scotland and the much older duke who died suddenly on their honeymoon. And now there is even more talk as the legitimacy of the marriage is being contested by the duke's son and heir.
Steven McBride is a decorated soldier-and a notorious gambler and womanizer. The last thing he wants is marriage, but due to a series of unfortunate events, his and Rose's names are linked in the papers, threatening the lovely lady with ruin. To save the day, Steven suggests that they claim to be engaged. But as desire boils between them, Rose and Steven soon learn the difficulties of maintaining their deception, which might not be a lie after all . . .

    Eh, this was just fine.
A bit of fanciful fun. So long as you don’t think too much about trying to make sense of why certain characters did what they did (or why others didn’t make themselves known earlier).
The MMC and FMC were likeable enough but not as fleshed out as I would have preferred.

Loved the story but not the narrator. But I love that in every story of this series the rest of the family is included. An American narrator is not suitable for an English story. Although she tried to have an English accent her American accent was quite pronounced at times.

It was an ok book. I enjoyed it but after some of the lovely ones I have been reading or listening to, it was ok, not great

I haven't really cared for the past two novels in this series, but this is the third novella in a row that's been quite enjoyable. The premise is a bit wobbly (pretend engagements always are) but if you just go with that (and the bit of a mystery in this one) it's a fun little story.
