      Too little biblical authority; way too much reliance on statistical data and personal anecdote. Read "Raising a Modern Day Knight" by Robert Lewis instead.

      I'm going to make a big claim. If you have a son (or more) you must read this book. You must.It is encouraging and challenging; enlightening and reassuring. Dobson has wonderful insight into the minds and spirits of little boys and practical advice on how to help cultivate wonderful human beings.A pivotal book for any parent of boys. And I hear he is coming out with a counterpart, Bringing Up Girls this year.

      This book should be more accurately titled "Raising Good Boys in Today's Hostile Social Environment." Much of the book details the external societal factors that influence the raising of boys and the forces that parents must work against. Only tidbits throughout the first sections and the last 2 chapters provide parenting advice directly applicable to boys' behavior. These are: take the TV and PCs out of the kids' rooms, how to discipline your children, ways to get your sons' attention, the importance of teaching them a work ethic, and the need to exert authority over children.

      Every parent should read this book as early as possible. Not only boy parents and not only after there’s a problem.

      I just love the way Dr Dobson writes... he is sensible and full of insight about the this matter of raising boys. I learned a lot from this book and I’ll be revisiting it from time to time.

      Love this! It has opened my eyes to my
      boys and how I can raise them to be strong godly men. Since I am their mother, I don’t always understand the “boy thinking”, I now, can be more patient and understanding as to why they do some of the things they do, even when I do not understand.

      This is an excellent book for a parent raising a son. The book gives information and advice for all age ranges and also has advice specifically for single moms. It teaches you how to equip your son to be a man and lead a Godly life.

      A lot of parenting knowledge that I didn’t think about. The hospital didn’t have a parenting class when we took our baby home- as far as I’m aware of.

      We can go to school for several months for a certification, and even years for a degree.

      But how much time do we spend on developing our parenting skills and work on that part of our lives?!

      Don't want to throw the baby out with the bath water, but let's just start with Dobson identifying Matt Lauer (later fired from The Today Show) as a prime example of what a man should be like; Dobson is full of contradictions (says humans are the Divine creation of God (which means humans are created differently than animals), yet uses horses, dogs and other animals to support spanking and otherwise physically hurting a defenseless human child (and ignores the piles of research that specifically identifies the harm to a child's soul and pshyche resulting from spanking). He also uses anecdotal comments from parents and children, as well as extreme scare tactics, to validate or "sell" his many "opinions" that he is pushing. Sad to see someone of such great power and influence twist words and insert non-relevant comments to try to get his point across. All this makes it difficult to pick out (discern) what is valid, real and helpful advice - versus harmful, false and his "imagined" point of view.
