This Russian for English Speakers CD was very clear in pronunciation and provided a better underanding of the nuances of the language. Unfortunately I am a visual learner, so the information had limited advantage for me. I wish there would have been text to go along with the verbal information - then it would have been perfect.

Writing a review of a language course is a delicate task. Asking whether this CD achieves its goal of teaching you Russian sort of depends on how you define the goal. As a general introduction to Russian, it's a miserable failure. But that doesn't mean that it is of no use. I can see two categories of users who might find this CD useful. The first is someone who wants to pick up just enough Russian to greet a prospective business associate, or handle a simple situation on a business trip to Russia. You'll never be able to hold a real conversation after studying this CD alone. Furthermore, since it's completely audio based, you'll learn nothing about the written language, so reading signs to navigate a Russian city is completely out of the question. The other potential user who might benefit from this CD would be someone who is trying to refresh or brush up on forgotten skills. If you studied Russian in college in the dim ages of your youth, this would probably help you to resurrect those dusty, dessicated neurons which still house useful knowledge.

This is a CD I received as part of the Early Reviewer program. I guess I thought I would get a book with this, but the intent here is to learn purely by listening. I feel I would like to really learn to read the alphabet. The voice on the tape seems pretty distinctive, but some of the subtleties in pronunciation are hard to get in the first couple of hearings. Probably with a lot of repeat hearings I would begin to get some understanding, but I'm not there as I write this.On second thought, I remember taking a Berlitz course that was not too different than the approach of this tape, the big difference is that I had a native speaker in the room with me and could watch her mouth and face while attempting to replicate it with my voice. So, I'm still in the early stage for this kind of learning.

The pronunciations for this audio CD are very clear and overall I'm finding it helpful. I would find it even more helpful if the speaker slowed down and possibly broke down the multi-syllable words. The speaker goes much too fast to get the full benefit from this CD.

I've tried several methods for learning foreign languages: Spanish was classroom instruction, both in high school and college. French was audio instruction via Pimsleur and Berlitz. This CD reminded me of a Berlitz course; Russian words and sentences were pronounced twice and then the instructor moves to a different phrase. The CD's categories were a good selection, and included the Russian alphabet with each letter's correct pronunciation. Other categories included greetings, directions, food, and numbers. This one CD will not make you an expert, but it can be a valuable help in learning pronunciation and some basic vocabulary.

(Early Reviewer Book) If you're going to be vacationing or doing business in Russia, and need an aid to memorizing a few simple, everyday phrases, you could do worse than this CD. Since I don't know any Russian, I'm not competent to say whether you could do better, but you could do worse. I'd recommend using this as a supplementary tool in conjunction with a written guidebook or language self-study course.

Max Bollinger, a native Russian speaker has composed an excellent guide to learning basic Russian for your next trip. Everything from greetings to dating a Russian beauty. Like other language software it works by repeating the words then using them. However unlike other language programs that slow down the words so you can hear each syllable, Easy Russian for English Speakers keeps everything “live”. As an audio book you are able to transfer the tracks to a media player and learn on the go. My only problem with the audio book is the order of the book and the lack of a companion booklet with the phrases and the alphabet.

The first thing that jumps out at me about these CDs is that they're way too quick. It seems like the Russian is spoken faster than the English, and the way the Russian is repeated makes it fairly hard to repeat after the speaker. Perhaps I'm over-literate, but I also found the lack of text to follow along to be a huge detriment.I'm not sure it has as much material on Russian, but having used Transparent Languages' 101 Languages of the World, with controlled speech speeds, written text, and fine-grained control over repeating and advancing sentences, I can't imagine that I would waste time trying to learn from a system as primitive as this.

As someone who has never studied Russian before, I thought that I was probably the perfect candidate for this program - I am certainly an untrained English speaker. Here's what I discovered: If you would like to learn Russian, you may find books that will teach you how to speak it, and you may find things that will teach you how to read it, but never the twain shall meet. There is NOTHING, almost nothing, that will teach you how to both write and speak Russian and is easily obtainable from your public library interlibrary loan system, or indeed, anywhere, for less than $400 from Rosetta Stone. That being said, I know quite a bit more Russian now that I have listened to this CD umpteen times. However, I found out that it was not enough to listen to it over and over. With nothing to visualize the words as I said them, the language flowed in one ear and out the other, leaving behind the tiniest trickle of knowledge. If I were to go to Russia a week after receiving this CD, all I could've said was "prevyet", "dos vedanya" and "taksi". ("Hello", "goodbye", and "taxi" to you.) Eventually, I decided that more action was needed, and sat down with the CD, taking down every word the speaker said in a kind of maniacal shorthand, and studying later to see if what I'd written made sense. It worked, for the most part. Russian appears to be very similar to both French and German, a fact that is cleverly disguised by their sneaky tactic of having their own secret alphabet. Or perhaps our rude insistence on our own non-cyrillic alphabet, I don't know :) But speaking of the alphabet, the fact that the CD purports to teach you the Russian alphabet was frankly silly. If you don't have an alphabet written down anywhere to connect the sounds to, what good is learning a lot of unrelated sounds going to do you? None, that's what! However, it was an interesting foray into a new language, and after collecting lots of material, all the better to make a real study of Russian, it became apparent that spoken Russian materials are greatly needed. This makes a not-inconsequential addition to the field.

I loaded this audio into my blackberry before flying to Moscow on business and it turned out to be very useful and a lot of fun too. My flight got delayed and I had time to go through the tracks several times in the airport. I actually expected a typical boring language course, but this one is fairly entertaining. It explains some cultural stuff and common words that exist in both English and Russian. Learning numbers, food, drink and shopping does help as most Russians don’t speak English at all.

These audio lessons jumped right into learning the language and moved briskly. I also enjoyed the structure of the lessons and their thematic organization. Unlike other audio language learning tapes the tracks were engaging - my attention was kept and I felt like I was actually absorbing Russian. I agree with previous reviewers that a written accompaniment would have aided learning (though the alphabet on the cover was a nice touch). Overall, this audio training is excellent for those who need to learn Russian fast, or may only need to learn enough for a specific situation.

Over the years, I have taken a few Russian courses and used many different study guides/tools to help learn the language. Obviously, one will never become fluent in a language after listening to one cd, but this particular disc is a good one to listen to for a quick introduction. It is always interesting to hear what one person considers to be the most important parts of the language, but there are no major surprises on this cd. For some reason, Russian seems to be more popular (at least for sources like this) in England than in the US, so there is a bit of British English to American English that must be done, but nothing major. Overall, this is a quality effort and I'd be interested in more training materials from Mr. Bollinger.

This is useful for some quick phrases for tourists and a good idea of how phrases should actually sound, but with less than an hour of material, it is a quick introduction at best. I hesitate to be too critical, as I don't generally learn languages well in this format, but I think this audio CD would be much better with some kind of companion book. It is wonderful for getting an idea for the sound of the language with a native Russian speaker, though, and I do appreciate the exposure. Also, this is somewhat more geared towards the British, rather than Americans, as evidenced by some of their examples. It shouldn't get in the way of an American picking up a few phrases though.
