About this audiobook

A sumptuous and epically told love story inspired by A Thousand and One Nights

Every dawn brings horror to a different family in a land ruled by a killer. Khalid, the eighteen-year-old Caliph of Khorasan, takes a new bride each night only to have her executed at sunrise. So it is a suspicious surprise when sixteen-year-old Shahrzad volunteers to marry Khalid. But she does so with a clever plan to stay alive and exact revenge on the Caliph for the murder of her best friend and countless other girls. Shazi's wit and will, indeed, get her through to the dawn that no others have seen, but with a catch . . . she's falling in love with the very boy who killed her dearest friend.

She discovers that the murderous boy-king is not all that he seems and neither are the deaths of so many girls. Shazi is determined to uncover the reason for the murders and to break the cycle once and for all.

I couldn't even finish the book. In all fairness, maybe it was because I listened to the audiobook and did not actually read it so maybe the narrator didn't do the story justice, but all the characters seemed ....wrong. They didn't fit the "time period" and seemed unrealistic to the time and to the original.

4.5 Stars - Suspenseful, mysterious and oh, so romantic!

I didn’t expect to love this as much as I did. The writing is beautiful (especially those chapter endings: poetry). While the focus is on the romance and character relationships, it's got a bit of everything. Love, action, mystery, revenge, magic, secrets, murder… I was thoroughly entertained from start to finish.

The tension and angsty romance is masterfully executed. I say “angsty” but I want to assure you that vibe is primarily due to the situation, not the way they treat it other. There’s no “bad-boy” trope going on here. The romance blossoms slowly and feels genuine and lovely. I appreciated how the emphasis of their relationship was based more on their everyday interactions and not on physical attraction/touch. That tends to be an issue in some books and this was a much better example of love for young readers. Speaking of younger readers; this does deal with some more mature themes than most YA. Parents will be happy to hear it’s written very appropriately. I think both adults and teens will enjoy it.

I love the Arabian inspired, fantasy setting and the colorful side-characters. They all have wonderful Arabic names and I am glad I was listening to the audiobook because I would never have pronounced them all correctly in my head. The narrator is really good too. It was a little tricky to tell when POV's were switching (since the author does that in the middle of chapters sometimes) but you get used to it. The language the characters use is more casual than I expected. Initially I was very unhappy with the snarky, casual way people talk to Shazi (especially her handmaiden) it just didn’t feel like how a Queen would be spoken to in this culture but that evolves a little over time and when you get to the end it makes sense. There were other small flaws of course but I barely noticed them because I was enjoying our story so much.

Overall it was an amazing ride that I’m ready to get back in line for. Next book here I come!

    Recommend for fans of:
    - Slow burn, hate-to-love romance
    - Rich world building
    - Powerful characters
    - Desert Fantasy

*SPOILER FREE - DO NOT READ BOOK*
Rape that is glossed over, phrases that are repetitive, instalove with a secretive serial killer, and a nonsensical love triangle. Not to mention that Shahrzad does not develop (no one does) and is a fire without a flame. Shahrzad is supposed to be a "strong female lead" but it falls flat. The prose is beautiful, but this book is very problematic. Our main is obviously a victim of Stockholm Syndrome and this is only looked at as an "extreme" guess by Tarik.

The idea of the source material ( One Thousand and One Nights) is lost after day two of captivity, and they fall in love within two damn days. It takes this "strong female lead" exactly two days to promptly fall in LOVE with her best friends MURDERER and her own RAPIST.

    S I C K.

I sat there hoping that Khalid would have a reason for it, but there is no reason good enough to excuse the murder of someone you loved. We don't even get to know who Shahrzad's best friend really is, other than the fact that she is the reason Shahrzad came planned (she had no plan really) to kill the serial killer she falls for after T W O D A Y S. BTW, his reason is stupid and he could have shared it with his people instead of keeping it some big dumb secret from everyone (causing them to reasonably hate his stupid guts for killing their children). I was just left feeling lied to and very irritated that I wasted my time here.

The Wrath and the Dawn? No thanks.
