- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5In the midst of a campaign to pass a bond referendum for Hughes Community College, anti-referendum foes conjure up charges that Professor Sally Good is a descendant of a woman hung as a witch in 17th Century Massachusetts. It was Sally’s late husband who was related to Sarah Good. The witch-hunters aren’t interested in facts; they want to see Sally removed from her job, just as they want Harry Potter books removed from library shelves. What a centuries-distant in-law, witch or not, has to do with a contemporary bond referendum is anyone’s guess, but such is the world of academia and/or small town Texas. An incompetent former professor (nicknamed The Garden Gnome) whom Sally as English department chair was instrumental in firing, dies in a way that suggests a link to witchcraft. Police aren’t certain whether the Garden Gnome’s death was accident, suicide or murder but the anti-witchcraft/anti-referendum foes are eager to tie his death to the college. Sally, her former boyfriend and his new girlfriend (faculty members all) decide to look into his death. Having been a community college administrator in Texas years ago, I felt right at home reading A Bond with Death. Bill Crider has created a story, setting and cast of characters that seemed very real to me. The writing is top-notch. Since the author is an English department chair, I didn’t expect any less. Although it’s tough to precisely define what “playing fair” with readers means, I could make a case that the author just barely met the standard. I can’t reveal specifics without spoiling the story. Even considering that one teensy flaw, however, A Bond with Death is a great read.First published in Mystery News, Feb/Mar 2005 issue.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5A light, cozy mystery with some unexpected humour.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I like Carolyn Haines, her books are an easy, entertaining read. Greedy Bones is my first introduction to Sarah Booth, I will definitely read the earlier books.
Nothing ground-breaking here, just a light cozy mystery, written well, with a good flow.
I would recommend this to fans of the cozy mystery genre. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was actually better than I thought it would be.... I do like the series but this started off with such sadness, that I almost gave up, I'm glad I didn't.
Tinkie's husband Oscar and 3 other people have been out to an abandoned plantation
that is growing G.M. cotton which is being eaten by G.M. weevils, all four are now in ICU and fighting for their lives.....no one can figure out what is going on.
Sarah Booth Delaney wants to get to the bottom of the illness but along the way stumbles upon: a greedy heir trying to force his sister to sell the plantation, the mysterious deaths of their parents, an illegitimate sister of the heirs, a bogus land developer, and a former resident turned Disease Control Agent who is hot on Sarah Booth's former flame Sheriff Coleman.... And let us not forget Sarah Booth's haint: Jitty! - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Not a bad addition to the series, but not my favorite either. Still an excellent series.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Sarah Booth Delaney returns home to Mississippi to support her best friend and partner, Tinkie. Tinkie's husband and 3 other people are suffering from an unknown disease that is slowly killing them. The only link is that they all visited a local plantation. Sarah Booth is convinced that the mysterious cotton crop and boll weevils that have appeared on the plantation are not an accidient of nature. She smells foul play and determined to get to the root of the mystery.I love this series. The characters continue to develop and the mysteries continue to improve. This one was a tricky one. Just when I thought I knew what was going on, another clue would pop up. I recommend reading this in series to get full enjoyment of the series.
