      Recommended to a friend writing a book on Vikings and he he loves it to. Out of 50 books I listened to last year, this was my favourite. Good for anyone.

      Very instructive. Helps see the world from a new perspective, where Europe is being constantly plundered and European people are enslaved and sold to Muslim masters in Sevilla or Baghdad. A history full of interesting paradoxes: How Russia became Christian through their Viking, initially Pagan, masters; and how Viking tribes or realms converted and became Christian, one after another, from Kiev to Denmark, as a way to benefit from the strength of Byzance or to rid the Franks from a pretext to attack them.
      Balanced approach. Enough details, but not too much. An access to dozens of captivating lives from many nations.
      Icing on the cake: very well read.

      Though he has written a fairly detailed history, the author has a very easy story-telling style that makes this audiobook very engaging. The narrator is superb. Highly recommended.

      Fantastic book, I especially enjoyed all of the details and stories, the descriptions of the battles and cunning strategies the Vikings used. I like the way it was segmented into different areas, England, France, Iceland, Greenland, Russia, individually through the ages and how they all tied together. Definitely a must have for anyone interested in Vikings

      This book is not what I expected. It was better. It’s a complete history of the Vikings period. It fills in a lot of blanks that I wasn’t able to make sense of in all of the historical fiction of the period. I truly enjoyed the listen.

      Excellent summary of the pragmatism, history, stories and impact of the Viking people as their civilization rose to prominence and then to decay. As a student of Celtic history, the Vikings have always been in the picture, but now I understand their history better.

      It is also interesting to read and hear the highlights of the Viking story and compare that to the Vikings TV show, which has heavy echoes and historical references for the historically interested viewer.

      I heard this book an audiobook floor on my commutes to work. Most books don't translate well to audio form, but this one was very strong. Highly recommended.

      As a history goes, a very easy read. There were a number of enjoyable stories, but not being familiar with the Vikings I cannot comment on the accuracy. I would also recommend the reader keep an atlas at hand--the book contains no maps to help the reader understand the geographical context.
