      Archangel’s Shadows is book seven in the Guild Hunter series. I have been loving this series so much, and after finding out all the books in the series except for the most recent release are in the Audible Romance Package, I was so delighted because I have really fallen behind on this series and this past week I wanted to take some time to get fully caught up.Archangel’s Shadows begins two years following Archangel’s Legion which is where we saw the great battle between Raphael and the evil (and crazy) Lijuan who is the archangel over China who wants to take over the world and Raphael is the one she probably fears the most because he is the youngest Archangel but also one of the most powerful. But now its been two years and New York is slowly recovering from the great battle that destroyed many. The Legion is becoming more prominent and Elena is trying to make an effort to make them feel welcome and being the best consort she can be and keeping up with her skills and gaining strength.But there is something happening to the vampires in the city, a blood lust is starting to happen and suspicion on a new drug that is coming and Ashlin and Janvier have been called upon by the Guild to find out where the drug is coming from and to stop the source. There has always been some sizzling chemistry between Ash and Janvier but there is plenty of angst between them until Ash almost dies and Janvier saves her life and now their relationship has changed. Ash is powerful and can kick some vampire booty when she needs to, but she is starting to see the sexy Cajun vampire in a new light.I really adored the sexy bantering between these two and man Justine Eyre is one of my favorite narrators for a good reason because man the way she handled Janvier’s accent was pure sensuality. I just got the shivers listening to her portrayal of his undertones and accent. There is a mystery that is developing with both Raphael/Elena and Ashlin/Janvier as they work both sides to find out what is going on in their city. Elena is trying to track down the blood that this “poison” is coming from and Ashlin is trying to hunt down the culprit behind everything. I really had a blast with this book and once I fully got into it I just found myself addicted to Janvier and Ashlin, their relationship is different but just as compelling as the others we have read in the series so far.

      This book doesn't' follow main characters but they do interact with the angles during a hunt. The hunt is from the fallout of the battle from the previous book but it makes sense that for the plot that for the most part you don't get too much of the angels and get more character growth of the minor players in the story. There is the usual " I have a secret" that one person can't tell the other that comes out but it isn't really a horrible secret and of course no one is angry about it. The hunt that Ash and Janvier start and successfully finish is a coda to the aftermath of the battle from the previous book . The romance has a nice HEA and this book could almost be a bit of a standalone novel in the series even if there are several things it spoils.

      Yay!!! I've been waiting for Ash and Janvier's book for FOREVER! Of course I loved it. There was some great angst in the beginning with Ash holding Janvier at a distance, seemingly inexplicably, but event when that was resolved, I still enjoyed their story.

      Who's next!!!! I'm dying for Aodhan's story, and Illium's too, but I suspect Nassir is next on deck, if not another Raphael/Elena book. Looking forward to Nassir's story for sure - he's fascinating! Gah, guess I have a whole nother year to wait though :(

      The city of New York is struggling to recover in the aftermath of the horrific battle against Lijuan’s forces. The Archangel Raphael, his consort Elena together with the members of the Seven and the Guild are all working to keep the peace, but when the desiccated body of a young woman is found the fragile calm is in danger of imploding. Given the task of investigating the insidious crime, Guild Hunter Ashwini Taj is partnered once again with the sexy Cajun vampire, Janvier, who drives her to distraction both personally and professionally. As the two get closer to capturing a merciless killer, Ash will have to confront her deepest fears and darkest secrets or risk losing the only man she has ever loved.

      While the mystery and the interactions between the familiar characters make this an enjoyable read, it is the weakest story in terms of the romance between Ash and Janvier.

      Unlike the previous books in the series, which focus on the machinations of the different archangels, the focus in this installment is on the darker and seedier side of New York inhabited by those immortals with more perverse proclivities and the humans who are drawn to them due to the promise of wealth, lust and pleasure. This particular setting is quite fascinating as it provides interesting insights into the dynamics between mortals and immortals within the Guild Hunter world, and the investigation into the mummified corpse of a young woman is intense and gripping. It is impossible not to identify and sympathize with the innocent victim lured into a life of humiliation, degradation and torture.

      Unfortunately, Ash and Janvier’s romance falls flat, which is disappointing as their previous interactions have been very promising. The witty banter and flirtatious skirmishes that characterized their earlier relationship are sorely missing and there is far too much melodramatic angst surrounding Ash’s family and the supposedly devastating secret that she is keeping from Janvier.

      The real highlight of the story are the updates in the lives of the other members of Raphael’s Seven including Dmitri, Illium and Aodahn as well as the mysterious and enigmatic Naasir who is definitely one of the strangest characters in the series thus far. Moreover, Elena’s ongoing struggles with her transition from hunter to angel are very compelling as she must cope with the diplomatic intricacies of being Raphael’s Consort as well as a visit from her exceedingly powerful and frightening mother-in-law.

      In sum, a good addition to the series for the developments in the world building and characterization, but not so much for the romance.

      This was one story that I've been hopelessly waiting since Ashwini and Janvier were first mentioned in the series. They had such an amazing love story and I can't help but stress how good the writing is here. Awesome.

      I must say this is one of the weaker books of the series. There are several reasons for me to say that. First of all I am a fan of Nalini Singh and member of a bunch of platforms like facebook and goodreads where people talk about her books. I accidentially read a spoiler and it ruined the surprise effect in this book. I won't say what but if the solution you've been waiting for comes in the last 20 pages it's kind of too late. I am not a fan of Janvier either. He didn't have the depth of other characters. So he gave me the impression of a mediocre young vampire who has above average physical strenght, some very limited mental supernatural capabilities, an overdrive to protect his loved ones and knows how to be patient. He is also the sweetheart of many other characters for reasons I cannot see. In real life I would have called him slimy. He is yet to develop his sophisticated side and has as a character very few quirks. All this makes him boring.Ash on the other hand reminded me of other characters of Singh in the psy changeling series. She isn't original and sorry to say that but she isn't the only one. A buch of characters repeat themselves under different names in Singh's books. If I wouldn't have read some very strong, sophisticated characters already I would say she is a bad author who repeats her stories with different titles.Another critical failure was the fact that Ashwini and Janvier's story is told in two different books. It starts with a novella where they have to work together for Nazarach the angel. I've read that story but it's been some time and I don't remember all the details. So I felt as if the first chapter is missing while I was reading this one. Sadly I don't own the novella it was from the library and to be honest I didn't bother to go find it to read again. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR SOMEONE WHO IS BEGINNING TO READ NALINI SINGH. Go pick another one or you will hate her and miss the really good stuff she writes.

      I'm rating this one 3.5 stars instead of 3, because the protagonists felt so much more equal than in many of Singh's other books. Although, there is the obligatory scene with the male hero reminding the female that he was physically her superior and could snap her neck, or something -- it was contextualized in terms of him comparing their relationship to her vague discomfort at the extreme power differential on display between the major power couple in this series, Elena and Raphael. But for the most part this aspect isn't on display. Other standard features of Singh's work are on display but not as annoying in this volume: Female protagonist fearing death or mental disintegration or both, with a traumatic background; mystery featuring a serial killer who targets women. But the female protagonist's agonizing future was minimized, because it never had a tremendous sense of urgency. Some folks found this a failing in the book; I was relieved actually to simply have a relatively domestic crisis, more easily resolved. The best thing about this book was the snappy banter between the characters, the empowered female protagonist, and the actual respect shown her by her male love interest.

      I really enjoyed this story of Ashwini and Janvier's romance. It is hard to fit a romance in when both are busy trying to find a vampire who is brutalizing women and draining more than their blood. Ash is determined to find justice for a hopeful young woman who was used, abused and left in a trash dumpster. The more she finds out about Felicity the more she wants justice for her.She and Janvier have been friendly enemies for quite a while. As a guild hunter, she has been sent to track him down on more than one occasion when he has irritated an angel. But all the while she has been falling for his Cajun charm. It helps that he is one of the few people that she can touch without being swept into his memories. Janvier has wanted her since he first saw her and has come to the point, after her near death in the angels' war, where he isn't going to be put off any longer.Ash is keeping a secret that she believes prevents her from forming a relationship. Janvier has a lot to do to convince her that nothing will separate them. I also enjoyed seeing Elena and Raphael in this one but wished we could have seen more of them. They are both busy picking up the pieces since the defeat, probably temporary, of Lijuan. I liked seeing Elena's growing relationship with the Legion and her growing role as Raphael's consort. Fans of the Guild Hunters series will definitely enjoy learning more about these two characters.

      I skipped a few books in the Guild Hunter series when the story started branching off to other characters so I wasn't super up to speed on Ash and Janvier. Thankfully I was still able to enjoy ARCHANGEL'S SHADOWS and it was nice that Elenaand Raphael had their POVs told as well. With everything that happened in the last book (which I did read) it was nice to get back into the swing of things and watch some of the characters as they recover and get back into investigating and keeping the city safe. Ash and Janvier have to work together in their investigations and we get to watch them grow closer and fight their personal demons together. I can't say I was too shocked by the end results of Ash and Janvier's relationship. It was pretty easy to see coming, but I am also glad that it happened. They both deserve happiness and I am glad they found it. I enjoyed Elana's interaction with the Legion. It seems as though they are really becoming their own persons and I enjoyed the little glimpses into watching them change. Raphael's Mom comes for a visit and I was a little surprised it seemed to go so well.ARCHANGEL'S SHADOWS was a good mix of urban fantasy and paranormal romance. I enjoyed being in each character's minds and I look forward to seeing what book 8 will be about.* This book was provided free of charge from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

      Review courtesy of All Things Urban FantasyI was thrilled to finally get a novel length story featuring Ash and Janvier and jumped at the chance to read and review it. I fell in love with these Ash and Janvier in ANGEL'S PAWN and have been waiting impatiently for more about these two. There is some POV with Raphael and Elena which is great to see and it serves to push the main plot along as well as gives us a little glimpse of what these two have been up to since the ARCHANGEL'S LEGION. Now the reason I adore Ash and Janvier is the excellently hilarious and antagonistic relationship they had in ANGEL'S PAWN. There is definitely more of the same violent flirting as I like to call it between these two in ARCHANGEL'S SHADOWS.The plot revolving around the horrific death of a woman who's body was left in a dumpster sends Ash and Janvier on a intense and bloody chase for answers to her death. As is usual with this series there are some very graphic and gory scenes that the faint of heart might want to skim over. I was constantly left on the edge of my seat wanting to know what happens next. While there are some fun action moments this story is more suspenseful than most of the previous books in this series.Ash and Janvier's relationship is like fire; intense, hot, and dangerous. They spend most of the story flirting and when they finally do decide to try for a relationship, their interactions get even more fun. Truly its the banter between these two that is the highlight of the book. I could read just the clever dialogue between these two and be happy. Janvier is the epitome of a sexy charming Cajun with some wonderful French Cajun language peppering his dialogue. He and Ash fit so well together and I was biting my nails hoping Ash would work through her dark secret that had her keeping Janvier at arms length.ARCHANGEL'S SHADOWS is everything I expected it to be and more with a great balance of romance and intrigue. Its an beautiful and intense story with a sizzling hot romance that had me enthralled from start to end.
