- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Witch wants to make pumpkin pie but her pumpkin is too big to handle alone. Luckily, some spooks are out haunting on Halloween and show up to help poor witch. This book is delightfully written and illustrated and emphasizes the value of teamwork!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I liked this book for two reasons. First, I liked how the author’s writing is clever yet predictable. On each page, a new character is added to the story, trying to pull out of the ground and win over a giant pumpkin to make pumpkin pie with. Each time a new character comes to try to pull the pumpkin, the other characters in the book each respond by muttering, “Hmph!” Each time a character tries and fails pulling the pumpkin out of the ground, that character shouts, “drat!” When reading this story with or aloud to children, they will pick up on the repetition of phrases and join in, making the story enjoyable and interacting for them. I actually witnessed this story being read aloud to a kindergarten class and the students loved being able to accurately predict what phrase was coming up, and they laughed each time they said the repeated phrases. The second reason I liked this book is because of the illustrations. I liked how the illustrator made the background dark on every page while the pumpkin is an incredibly vibrant orange color. This corresponds with the written text well because it represents why the characters in the story all want the giant plump pumpkin to make pumpkin pie. The big idea of this book is to celebrate Halloween and inform young readers that pumpkins make pumpkin pie.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Good Halloween read-aloud.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book. I have used it for YEARS with all different grade levels Pre-K - 2nd grade. Over the years it has progressed to a big dress up and act it out with the book and cassette. The song gets stuck in my head and yes I know all the words. Great for sequencing order.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is a fun book to read around Halloween. The pictures are cute and somewhat scary but not too bad. In the story, the witch plants a pumpkin seed and it grows and it's too big for her to get it off the vine by herself. A mummy, vampire ghost, and bat come by and try to help her pull the pumpkin off the vine. The bat had the best idea by saying they should all work together and pull the pumpkin off the vine together. it works and they take the pumpkin to the witch's house where she makes pumpkin pie for everyone.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This story has a witch with a problem. She has grown a huge pumpkin to make a pie and cannot get it off of the vine. A ghost, vampire, mummy all come along and they cannot get it off of the vine. Finally a small bat shows up and suggests they work together to pull the pumpkin. The pictures do a great job complimenting this story and have a slight spooky feel that is great for a Halloween time reading. This story really lends itself to making it into a play for children to act out.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Kind of a cute Halloween book with some repetitive text so my three-year-old can repeat phrases along with me. The pictures are "spooky" enough for my three-year-old but not too scary. The witch plants a pumkin and when she goes to pull it off the vine, it's too big. Successful Halloween characters come along and each unsuccessfully try to pull the pumpkin. Finally the smart bat suggests that they all cooperate and pull together! Of course this works and the witch makes pumpkin pie out of the pumpkin which they all share. The book ends with the witch planting another pumpkin seed.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great Halloween adaptation of the classic repetitive story "The Turnip".
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A great story about teamwork. Repetitive so it is a fun read aloud.
