      Angel's Flight is an anthology of novellas from Nalini Singh's Guild Hunter series. Each story focuses on angels, vampires or mortals that we have been introduced to throughout the series. Both Angel's Wolf and Angels' Judgement were released in previous print anthologies (Angels of Darkness and Must Love Hellhounds, respectively), but Angels' Pawn was strictly available as an e-book until this particular anthology was released. Angel's Dance, however, is completely new and the highlight of this book.

      Nalini Singh's Guild Hunter series takes place in a slightly altered reality - all of Earth's cities, countries and continents are the same, but human beings are just a part of the world. Archangels rule vast territories - for example, Raphael is the Archangel of North America - and have angels assisting them. The next rung on the ladder holds vampires; these are mortals who have been Made by angels (a simple bite to the neck by another vampire doesn't cut it in Singh's universe) and as part of the contract serve the angels for 100 years before regaining their freedom. Both angels and vampires are immortal - or at least grow into immortality, as it is something that settles into them as they age. Vampires sometimes try to run out on their contracts, or may be overcome by blood lust, and this is where the Guild Hunters come in. The hunters are generally mortals who are trained in retrieval of vampires. They are basically bounty-hunters. They work with local law enforcement and any crimes that appear to have been caused by vampires is usually assigned to them (angels police their own).

      This adult romance series is based in the Archangel Raphael's territory. Raphael is supported by his Seven - three vampires and four angels - who help protect and govern his territory. Raphael has fallen in love with a hunter and through their interactions we are introduced to her co-workers and his Seven. This is relevant, because each of these novellas plays into Singh's full-length novels by giving us additional background on characters we see in the main novels. Angels' Judgement and Angels' Pawn are more focused on the Guild Hunter side of the equation, while Angel's Wolf and Angels' Dance are geared more towards the angel/vampire side of things.

      Angels' Pawn is a story involving hunter Ashwini and vampire Janvier, who is eternally courting her by getting in trouble with angels (so that she can hunt him down). It is a bit of a running joke in the main novels whenever Ashwini appears because she has always just finished a hunt involving Janvier, or is about to embark on another. In this novel we get to see them working together to hunt for a vampire who has apparently been kidnapped. The hunt takes them into the territory of an extremely dangerous angel, Nazarach, one of Raphael's subordinates. This little story gives us an up-close-and-personal look at the relationship between Ashwini and Janvier, but their story is definitely not resolved. They will be running into each other many times more through the series.

      In Angels' Judgement we meet Sara Haziz, who has been asked to take over as Guild Director. She is not sure she wants to leave fieldwork and sit behind a desk, but she is the best person for the job. While Sara is trying to decide, she is about to be put to the test by others; it is standard procedure to try and kill the director nominee to see if they are strong enough to hold the position. We get to see Sara actually on the hunt in this story and we learn how she and her husband, Deacon, met. This is a novella I had actually read, but never had a copy of my own, so I was glad to finally add this to my library. I like both these characters and it is great seeing how they used to work in the field; I just felt the romance was a bit abrupt. However, the story really moves and we have an explosive ending with a blitz of vampires laying siege to Sara and Deacon in a junkyard. The hunter that Raphael has fallen in love with, Ellie, makes a brief appearance at the end as she comes to rescue her best friend (Sara) from the vampires.

      It was a surprise to see Angel's Wolf in this anthology, since it was just released a few months ago, but I really like this story so it is not a hardship to have another copy. This story concerns vampire Noel who has been assigned to the court of another angel in Raphael's territory, Nimra. Noel has recently recovered after an incredibly brutal attack and this is his first assignment since his return. Believing he has actually been demoted with this assignment, Noel is surprised to find there is more to this move to Nimra's court than meets the eye. He has actually been sent to determine who recently tried to poison Nimra. During his investigation, he discovers Nimra has faced a tragedy of her own. They find in each other the one person who can help them heal.

      And lastly, we have my absolute favorite story - Angels' Dance. It takes place 400 years before the other three stories and tells of the love that develops between Jessamy and Galen. Jessamy is the only angel to have ever been born with a deformed wing and is unable to fly. Instead she has become the teacher to angelic children and the keeper of angelic histories. Galen is looking to become weapons-master to Raphael's troops and comes to the Refuge (a neutral territory for all angels that is secret from mortals) to show his skills. When an attempt is made to assassinate Jessamy for knowledge she is unaware she has, Galen insists on taking charge of her protection. And so their courtship begins. I was thrilled to see this story written; the romance between Jessamy and Galen (who is now one of Raphael's Seven) was hinted at in Singh's Archangel's Kiss so it was wonderful to see it developed. The novella is the perfect platform for this particular story - there is not enough here for a full novel, but there is enough to it to make it a great short story.

      I obviously love this series and enjoy these particular stories, so why three stars? Mainly because there is only one original story. The other three have already been released - one of them extremely recently. However, since I only had two of them in my actual collection it was worth it to me to purchase the book for the other two. Your mileage may vary. If you have the other three, is it worth it to purchase this book for Angels' Dance? Maybe - it depends how interested you are in Jessamy and Galen. It is nice, however, to have all these short stories in one place. If you have not read any of the Guild Hunter series, this would be a good place to get your feet wet since it introduces characters you will meet again in the full-length novels. All in all, Angel's Flight is a solid entry in the series.

      Angel’s Wolf (Noel and Nimra) - I really enjoyed this one, though maybe because I was listening to the audiobook and I adore that format. I liked the mystery aspect and the wounded hero. Glad to know things worked out for Noel! (3 stars)

      Angels’ Judgment (Sara and Deacon) - Great to have some backstory on these two, thought their settled domesticity is not so much something I am into. (3 stars)

      Angels' Pawn (Ash and Janvier) - I love their antagonism! The "enemies" with a bite of lust bit is a big favorite of mine, to be sure (3.5 stars)

      Angels’ Dance (Jessamy and Galen) - Yay! One of my absolute favorite tropes! Disabled heroine wooed by gruff warrior. I loved watching Jessamy come out of her shell. (4.5 stars)


      Overall, a great anthology (3.5 stars is the average). I completely adore this series!!!

      Four short stories all in the the Guild Hunter series. Two of them I had read in other collections so this was a fast read to say the least. The nice thing about this collection of short stories is the reader doesn't have to have a background in the series to enjoy them. It was a good read even if I had read two of the stories all ready. Now if I had bought this instead of borrowing it from the library I might not feel so happy about half of the collection being reprints.

      This book contains four novellas in the Guild Hunter universe. Each of them is a romance. In the first, a Hunter romances the vampire who is her prey. This one is mostly teasing and flirting as the two pretend to dislike each other but end up working together to "rescue" a kidnapped vampire. This one also features a particularly scary and cruel angel.In the second story the romance is between Sara who is in line to be the leader of the Guild and Deacon who is the Guild's bogeyman and a talented weapons maker. They fall in love while trying to find the hunter who is killing innocent vampires.In the third story the romance is between a vampire who was horribly abused and an angel that someone wants to kill. This angel still has her humanity despite having a very awesome power that lets her defend her territory and her people. The final story is a romance between two angels. Jessamy has been the teacher for the babies in the refuge for over 2000 years. She keeps herself there because she was born with a deformed wing and can't fly. Galen is a warrior who has come to the refuge to be Rafael's weapons master. He is tough and smart and strong and love-starved. Jessamy knows love and has a wealth of friends but she has never taken a lover or taken a risk for love.All of the stories were entertaining. All of them threw light on different parts of the Guild Hunter universe. Fans of novellas who can't get enough of the Guild Hunter universe are the best audience for these stories.

      Listening to audiobook

      I really enjoy this series. This book give you a look into the lives of many of the secondary characters and even some new ones. You also get to see a different side to some of the main characters you've know for a long time.

      I loved seeing Raphael with Jessamy. He is a completely different character around someone who is much older and helped raise him than he is with anyone else. To see Jessamy and Galen come together was touching. She is such a kind heart.

      I also really liked seeing more of Deacon and Sara. They are a great pair. It was a lot of fun seeing them come together

      All the stories are great, but these two were my favorite. While, I think you could read this without have read the rest of the series, I think you would appreciate it much more if you have. This is true for even the stories that take place before the Angel's Blood.

      All of these I would've given between a 3 1/2 and 4 1/2

      Angel's Pawn 56 pages - Well, it was good but not a HEA only a lot of heat. I wonder if these two will get a book. I liked the story, not loved it but I loved the characters. My least favorite of the collection.

      Angel's Judgment 74 pages - This is the story of 2 hunters, the future Guild direct and best friend of Ellie, and the Slayer, a hunter of hunters. It was good and they had chemistry but it was way too fast and not developed enough for me to give it my favorite vote. They probably could have been in a short novel or duology instead of 74 pages. I wish she gave some of the pages of Angel's Dance to this story.

      Angel's Wolf 82 pages - This was my favorite of the 4 though Dance comes in a close 2nd. A hurt vampire is assigned to help an Angel with treachery in her court. Through solving the issues, the angel opens to the vampire and he starts healing. It is sweet yet has heartbreak. It is a PNR.

      Angel's Dance 139 pages - This is a prequel to the series, as Sara's story is. Galen see Jessamy and immediately decides to pursue the teacher. The teacher has resigned herself to a life of solitude with no relationships as she is damaged and think that men just court her for pity. This would've been a perfect story but that in the middle of the story, Galen gets it in his head that Jessamy might stay with him out of gratitude. All through the first 1/2 of the book, he is very direct, yet now... he give her space. She doesn't understand his standoffishness and he doesn't come out and say something. This goes on for months. They finally get together, say they belong to each other, yet again, Galen gets it in his head that she should have a choice while they are separated by housing/job issues. This just created angst where there was none, IMO. It could have been 40 pages short without the separations and would've been just as good, maybe better. I so liked the "barbarian" Galen and the "scholar" Jessamy. She takes his brashness as rudeness, he takes her reluctance as a battle to win. I really loved Galen in the end.

Love. My. Job. Or, my “job” as it were. I get to read then review books by some of my favorite authors. Let that be a disclaimer…I am a bit prejudiced, I live for the day the next book by Nalini Singh comes out. I love her books and this one was no exception. This volume contains four novellas about the characters from her Guild Hunter series, two of which are making their first appearance in print. I was so excited when I got this one in the mail; I just had to read it right away.Angel’s Pawn brings us to the deep south of Atlanta, Georgia where a newly formed vampire gang, or “kiss” as the book calls it, has kidnapped the descendant of one of the more powerful vampire families of the region. Their angel in charge brings in the vampire hunting guild, and more specifically, Ashwini, hunter extraordinaire, to retrieve her. With the help of her vampire “friend,” the rather tasty, Janvier, she is able to gain entrée into the group’s headquarters and retrieve the kidnapped vampire.You might notice I had a bit of trouble defining the relationship between Ash and Janvier. As a vampire hunter, Ashwini has been previously hired to track down Janvier and bring him in, only to be denied the pleasure at the very last second. As a result from their combined time together, it appears that Janvier has developed certain feelings for Ash. However, Ashwini has a personal rule: no dating the enemy, namely those vamps she makes a living hunting. Though, had I been in her shoes, I would have given in to temptation a LONG time ago. And I can’t for the life of me figure out what she’s waiting for. I mean, there is a man that rules were made to be broken for.Angel’s Judgment was a reread for me. It gives us a look back into the past of the Guild’s Director, Sara, before she held the position, and how her relationship with the very impressive Deacon began. When the two met, Deacon held the role of The Slayer, the specter who hunted the hunters gone bad. Deacon is also the man behind all the very best tools used by the Guild hunters. The two are thrown together to find a hunter who has been indiscriminately killing innocent vampires, and to make sure Sara survives the test phase that comes with being picked as the future Guild Director.Suffice to say her becoming director was no easy task, but it did come with a bit of yummy Deacon frosting.Angel’s Wolf is nothing short of a love story. The kind of love story that makes you sigh, then roll over and cuddle with the man you love. Noel is a vampire broken, a victim of torture healed only by the fact that he is an almost immortal. Noel is seemingly exiled to Louisiana to serve the angel Nimra. What he doesn’t realize is that all is not right in the bayou. Nimra is an angel, who is also tortured by her past, in this case a relationship gone bad, and a very devastating loss. She has called to Raphael for help in dealing with a threat and very personal betrayal. You see, someone she considers almost family is apparently trying to harm her using a poison that is paralytic for angels, which then allows them to be murdered.What neither of them was expecting was the feelings they would develop for each other, species lines be damned.Angel’s Dance brings us four centuries into the past, when Raphael was still a newbie archangel without his seven, when the city of New York was still wilderness, when Jessamy met Galen.
