About this audiobook

For deadly secret agent Peter Macmillan, language is a weapon-one he uses to hunt criminals, destroy plots, and charm enemies. Seducing information out of a beautiful singer in a Bangkok hotel should be easy . . . except that this particular singer has the power to destroy his cool façade, and with it, his last defense against a dark past.

He tricked her. He helped himself to her body and her secrets. He has enemies everywhere. Laney Lancaster should hate Peter, but when she discovers him shirtless, sweaty, and chained up in the hotel's dungeon, all she can think about is freeing him. Because she knows what it's like to be trapped and alone. And she could use a dangerous friend. They might be wrong for each other, but to survive they must trust each other with their lives-and their hearts.Contains mature themes.

Laney is living in Thailand, on the run from her psychopathic ex who has sent his goons after her to bring her back to the U.S. She meets Macmillan, a linguistics professor lecturing in Bangkok. They are immediately and intensely attracted to each other. We learn almost from the beginning that Laney is being set up by people she trusts. And Macmillan is a lot more than a linguistics prof. He’s also a secret agent with the Association, a secret, high-level security group devoted to stopping the auction of a laser weapon of mass destruction. Both Laney and Macmillan are wounded from earlier life experiences. She tends to be naïve but also brave. He’s an intellectual who is also a killer. Their steam turns into real love and a chance for a new life. His ventures into language, the stuff of linguistics, are actually very interesting and made me wonder if there are people out there now tracking down terrorists using his methods. The romance is super steamy. Even better is the suspense. There were passages in the book that were so suspenseful than I ended up reading page after page when I was supposed to be working! This book won the 2014 RITA Best Romantic Suspense award. The award is well-deserved.

This was a good book, but not as good as I expected after reading so many great reviews about the story. The male lead is a spy who does most of his work as a linguistic expert, analyzing language to determine who the person is that his organization is looking for and finding guilty parties. The book was obviously well researched, but the amount of time that is spent explaining the linguistic aspects of the story become a distraction and slow the story down in places. Also, the main female character frequently resists doing things that she knows are right because she is too cautious. Her choices make her a hard character to like.

Very good story on top of the slow building romance. I love these Associates books!

Listened for Review (Tantor)Overall Rating: 4.50Story Rating: 4.50Character Rating: 4.50Audio Rating: 4.00First Thought when Finished: Off the Edge by Carolyn Crane was unique, full of suspense, and I really liked Mac and Laney to boot!Overall Thoughts1: Laney, Laney, Laney--you were a totally unique leading lady. Smart, sassy, but also a little dense. I don't know why but that made me love you!2: Mac! I would seriously let you dissect my linguistics anytime :)3: Setting--Holy Globe-Trotting! These men are just stirring up trouble and/or fixing problems all over the place. Rather impressed.4: (I have already read book 3) This is my favorite book in the series so far by just a smidge and that is all Laney.5: Love when a person in a story can go through the grinder and still see good in life! LOVE THAT!Audio Thoughts Narrated by: Romy Nordlinger /Length: 9 hrs and 59 mins / Publisher: Tantor Audio Romy is a solid narrator that I can count on to deliver a story. She has the ability to capture and enhance a character through pacing and attitude. That came in especially handy with Laney. Overall she does a great job!Part of my Read It, Rate It, File It, Done Reviews

The second book of The Associates series is an action packed romance that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat.Secret agent Peter Macmillan uses language as a weapon, he uses it to hunt criminals, destroy plots, and charm enemies. Seducing one beautiful singer should be easy, but she has the power to destroy his cool façade. On the run from her cruel husband, Laney Lancaster has been hiding in Bangkok at a friend’s hotel, but when she discovers that those she thought were friends really work for her husband, the only person who can help her is the man who tricked her. Together they are forced into a world of hot sex and dark danger and to survive they must trust each other with their lives. This fast paced plot takes the reader on a thrill ride through Bangkok with lots of suspense, betrayal, action, romance and steamy sex. The author brings the story to life with vivid descriptions and intense details that give the reader clear pictures of every scene making it seem as if they are part of the story. The strong and compelling characters are easily related to and believable as are the action scenes. The attraction between Laney and Peter radiates heat from every page and the sex scenes sizzle with red hot passion. The author conveys the emotions, passion and personalities of all the characters with an intensity that has the reader feeling as if they know the characters personally. The author has created a thrilling world that captures the imagination and thoroughly engages the emotions. The Associates are the good guys, but are ruthless which has the reader dealing with conflicting emotions, I didn’t know whether to cheer them on or hate them almost as much as the bad guy. I haven’t read the first book yet, but I will be remedying that and I am looking forward to reading more about this stimulating world.
