About this audiobook

A hand-picked cadre of warriors, they had the fierce courage of their Scots forefathers, combined with the stealth and cunning of the Indians who lived beside them in the wilderness. Battling the French in a no-holds-barred combat, they forged a new brand of honor, became a new breed of men-MacKinnon's Rangers.

Iain MacKinnon had been forced to serve the British crown, but compassion urged him to save the lovely lass facing certain death at the hands of the Abenaki. He'd defied his orders, endangered his brothers, his men, and his mission, all for a woman. But when he held Annie's sweet body in his arms, he could feel no regret. Though he sensed she was hiding something from him, it was too late to hold back his heart. In love and war, there are times when the only course of action is . . . surrender.

After my enjoyable reading experience with Pamela Clare's Ride the Fire, I was told that I simply must read Surrender. Whew man, am I glad I listened to everyone!Although forced to serve the British during the French and Indian War, Iain MacKinnon does his job well. He and his band of Rangers have had much success but when Iain spies the courage of one beauty about to be ravaged by the Abenaki Indians, he defies his superiors and leaves to rescue her.Annie Burns Campbell has known betrayal and forced submission as well, having been sold into indentureship by a ruthless uncle and sent far from her home in Scotland to the Americas. But when Iain saves her and takes her along with him she keeps it all inside in the hope that freedom will soon be hers.Circumstances have a way of changing our heart's desire and Annie decides to risk it all to remain with the one man who has stirred a passion in her she has never known before- only to find that her past is about to catch up with her.Clare has a feel for what historical romance readers want. Passionate love, strong noble men, vulnerable woman with backbone and yes, steamy sex! And to put it over the top for us- she placed her characters in the same setting as my most romantic movie of all time- The Last of the Mohicans starring Daniel Day Lewis.Clare's historical's should not be missed!

It seems to be that the go-to way to show the hero as capable, and give him opportunities to rescue the damsel, is to have the heroine repeatedly bumble into danger. And that is the least interesting way in my opinion. So we have some of that here, which is a bit tiring, but the heroine does improve some as well, so it's not as bad as it could be. A couple cliches. But overall I was quite entertained, and didn't even think about DNFing it. I'm hoping that the following heroines won't be as 'fish out of water' to start, but I don't think my happiness with the books will entirely depend on it.

This review may contain spoilers, so fair warning, upon reading the review.IntroductionSurrender is the first book in the "MacKinnon Ranger"s series. This is a series that I have had on my TBR for the longest of time. And I was convinced to read this when I saw some great reviews and a good friend of mine rave about it. I absolutely had a fun time with this one, and absolutely loved the setting of it dealing with the French War in Canada and Northern Colonies. I really enjoyed the way in which the author developed the romance and honestly I just trust Pamela Clare at this point. Just about every book that I read from her is brilliant. I really was intrigued by the set up of this one, and I was so easily drawn into this one. Even though I had the ebook, I did find the audiobook through Hoopla and decided to listen to this one and I am glad I did, the narrator did such a tremendous job on it.My OutlookSurrender was a brilliantly written romance and I really had a blast with it. While it didn't quite make it to 5 stars, it was still such a well done read. I absolutely adored the depth and development of the romance itself. It did have some angst but it was minimal and not overly drawn out or anything. I really enjoyed the whole Highlanders fighting in North America, it was so fascinating especially with them having Native American roots as well. I just found the world building so fascinating. You could tell that the author really did their research on it and it was well done as you can see it within the details. And despite when it was written, I do think readers today could easily read this.I did find the romance intriging. There was a sense of forbidden in it, and the way that it plays out was so interesting. It definitely will have the reader in their feels and emotions and I enjoyed the manner in which it was developed. There is more conflict outside of the relationship, which is what I really enjoyed. It had such a refreshing feel to it. The sense of brotherhood and family between the brothers was so well done. I just can't wait for their books! If you like adventure feeling romances, then you definitely need to pick these up.Overall ViewI found Surrender to be a superb read that had me so in tune with the story from the beginning and I couldn't put it down! A thrilling historical to captivate instantly!Rating Evaluation:Plot: 5World Building:5Cover:5Hero: 4Heroine: 4Steam: 4Heart & Feels:4Ending:5Overall View: 4.25

    Synopsis:
Forced to serve in the British Army on pain of death, Iain MacKinnon and his brothers becomes fearsome warriors against the French forces in Colonial America. When he stumbles across Anne Burns Campbell on the verge of being raped and murdered, Iain defies his orders and saves her life. But Anne has secrets that may destroy their burgeoning relationship for she is not who Iain believes her to be …

    Review:
An exciting mix of romance and adventure set during the French-Indian wars. The first half of the plot is reminiscent of the film The Last of the Mohicans with Daniel Day Lewis (a favorite of mine), and the vivid historical descriptions and language enhance the immersive quality of the story.

The characterization is fantastic. Iain is a magnificent hero (of course, I’ve always had a soft spot for highlanders) and Annie is courageous, spirited and loving. The buildup of their relationship is passionate and compelling. While the “keeping secrets” plot device is not one of my preferred themes, it is neither overdone nor drawn out and merges well into the storyline.

The secondary characters are well-developed, especially Iain’s brothers, Morgan and Connor (who will feature in books of their own – hopefully Joseph will as well), and the villains – one diabolical and the other with questionable morals. The question of whether the latter will redeem himself is one of the more intriguing aspects of the book. The camaraderie between the rangers and their sense of loyalty and community is another highlight.

Surrender epitomizes the best of the historical romance genre. I will definitely be continuing with the series and will probably re-read this one again and again.

I read another reviewer describe 'Surrender' as 'Braveheart' meets 'Last of the Mohicans' - pretty accurate statement. This story reads like a great adventure novel. Superbly written and well-researched. Pamela Clare doesn't disappoint.

The story I started was mostly about people being beaten, shot, flogged etc. so I reread the reviews and wondered if I was reading the same book. Scotswoman Annie, branded by evil uncle and sold to colonies, crosses paths with Scotsman Ian who was forced to fight for British or hang for murder. I quit halfway.

Very enjoyable historical romance. The sex scenes were a bit much, mostly because of how closely one scene followed another. She could have cut several without affecting the story.

The middle lagged as it became all about their relationship rather than the war around them, but I really liked the ending.

Damn, this was good. Iain was just...*sigh* And at parts I even got a bit choked up. Some times I pick up a book and it just takes me on this long, wonderful ride. This was one of them. Why, why, why, aren't there Iains that just happen to move next door when I'm having a good hair day? Or just happen to walk into Panera Bread when I'm getting ready to eat my salad alone again and he just happens to ask me if I'm alone and I say I am and then he asks if he can join me and I say yes and then.....And Iain was just...*sigh*

Entertaining, but a little too much gratuitous sex for me.

After mentioning my enjoyment of NA novelsm a book group friend suggested I read this series. Thank you Mary.
From page one to the end of the Epilogue I was entranced. Iain is the mold for strong, caring intelligent brave ..heros. They do not come any better. Annie is the beautiful, capable intelligent heroine with burdens Iain helps to carry and to, with time, accept.
Iain is the head of the MacKinnon Clan in America and the Major of the Rangers who aid the British forces along side the Native band that he and his brothers have known for a lifetime. How did a Scottish ladd come to fight with the British in these times? By trickery and blackmail and that is just the beginning. This is a face paced page turner that ticks all of the boxes for me.

Surrender by Pamela ClareSurrender had everything I love, especially strong, independent characters, that make it easy to fall into their story and their world – that seem real enough to touch. Ian and Annie are wary and unsure of each other, and rightfully so considering the circumstances and their historical perspective, but their character similarities and some good old-fashioned chemistry make them aware of each other. That awareness and the deft, sparse pen of Miss Clare leads to some significantly hot scenes. Sometimes when I’m reading the build-up to a sex scene, the kisses get boring or routine or I just find myself thinking, “Do it, so we can move on with the story!” Not so with Surrender. Every kiss was read-worthy. Every bit of tension translated to a next step in their passion for each other. But none of that over shadowed a great action and adventure story filled with heroes and villains. There were courageous acts and horrific scenes and some gallows humor I imagine would be true when your every day was spent in surviving against enemies and a beautiful, but deadly, terrain. I found William Wentworth to be the most interesting character of the story other than Annie and Ian. Ruthless, and perhaps born that way, but complicated and human enough to have great flaws and still possess some measure of right and wrong. I hated him and pitied him and wondered if he was redeemable. I’ll be thinking of him as much as I will Ian’s brothers while looking forward to Miss Clare’s next story.

ABOUT THE BOOK:Unlawfully charged with a crime and now fighting for the hated British, Iain MacKinnon disobeyed orders and endangered his brothers and his mission to rescue a woman. And though he sensed Annie was hiding something from him, it was too late to hold back his heart...REVIEW:Okay, so while the about doesn’t provide much, this book is a MUST read. Matter of fact, it’s a read it over and over and over again! Ms. Clare has done it again! She manages to ensnare me in her world and just when I think I may just “enjoy” a piece she has written, I walk away after reading, only to find that I absolutely ADORED the crap outta it. *grin*The characters are so very real, so very smooth, so very intriguing, and SO very lovable. Iain is the hero everyone wants to meet and Annie is the heroine that everyone wants to be. The rangers are adorable and Ms. Clare maintains such a level of honor and integrity that makes the entire experience so real. So true. I truly enjoyed this piece, loved all the different ways she added more drama to it and absolutely adored the MacKinnon brothers. Ms. Clare, if you shall ever find yourself in need of sending one of your heroes’s a home – send them my way!Five out of five stars for a job well done!

The MacKinnons are a group of brothers whose family fled Scotland after the bitter loss at Culloden. They begin anew in the American colonies, dreaming of a prosperous life tilling the earth and reaping its bounties. Partly raised by the native Muheconneok Indians, they become great hunters and learn the way of the land. But the brothers are framed for a murder they did not commit and are forced to fight for the British in the French and Indian War. They despise the British regime and hold fast to their Scottish roots and Highland beliefs even as Iain, the oldest of the three, enlists a band of Rangers, which include his native adopted brothers. Annie Burns Campbell, once a noble lady, has been betrayed by her ruthlessly vile uncle. He sells Annie into indentureship and sends her far from her beloved Scotland, over the ocean to the Americas. When Iain defies orders and saves her from a band of Abenaki Indians, her life begins anew and she becomes a brave frontier woman fighting for survival. Thus begins a historical romance that will be scorched upon your memory. Our hero, Iain MacKinnon, is a powerful warrior who possesses a body filled with brute force, muscles flexing, protecting all that is his. Yet, he is also a beautiful man filled with a tenderness that makes you weep when he caresses his lover, every bit of emotion filled within his eyes and pouring forth upon her. What woman could possibly resist this combination of strength and tenderness, savagery and gentleness? I surely could not, and neither can our heroine, Anne Campbell. "She loved his strength, his courage. She loved his fairness, the protective way in which he led his men - a true son of Highland lairds. She loved his gentleness, the way his big hands, so fierce with rifle and blade, moved tenderly over her skin. She loved the deep blue of his eyes, the velvet of his voice, the exotic markings on his sun-browned skin. She loved his manly smell, the hardness of his body, the way his kisses set her aflame." I absolutely loved this book. Pamela Clare has managed to build a heart-gripping love story set upon the backdrop of the American frontier, in a time filled with the ravages of war. Who would think that a Highlander in upstate New York during the 1700's would be the basis for a tale filled with turmoil, adventure and unrelenting passion. One cannot help but see the resemblances between this book and the great movie "The Last of the Mohicans". I was also reminded of other historical tales, including Sara Donati's Into the Wilderness series and my all-time favourite, Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series, of which the later books involve the hero and heroine arriving in the colonies of America. The history in Surrender is intriguing and the battles are vividly described, making me feel the bitter loss of lives on the battle field. There were many times in the book when I felt so deeply touched and deeply aroused. The intimate scenes between Iain and Annie involved both tender lovemaking and hot, erotic sex. The surprise ending made my heart swell and my tears fall, for it was here that Iain learned just how revered he was by his men. Underlying this whole tale is that sense of hope....hope for a new life in a new land with a new family with new-found happiness. I love these words uttered by Iain to his new wife. They reveal, for me, what love and committment are all about....sadness and joy...the price we must pay for true love: Annie turned to her husband, lifted her gaze to his. "Since I met you, Iain MacKinnon, I seem always to be feelin' both sadness and great joy at once." "Aye, lass, 'tis much the same for me." He kissed the top of her head, wiped the tears from her cheeks, his blue eyes filled with tenderness. "But my Muhheconneok grannies would say you cannae open your heart to one wi'out riskin' the other, and I would rather chance the deepest sorrows of hell, Annie, than surrender the joy you and little Iain bring me each day."

That plaid on the cover was deceiving. Everytime I looked at it I though "Scottish set historical" but of course it's not. The book is set in colonial America during the French and Indian War. The hero Iain MacKinnon and his brothers have emigrated from Scotland and are now being forced to lead a band of colonials to fight along side the British against the French. Anne Campbell has been forced into indentured servitude by her evil uncle. This was a wonderful book! After loving last year's Ride the Fire, I was reluctant to start this one because I was afraid it would not live up to the quality of RTF but I'm so glad I finally picked it up. The heroine is so incredibly strong. I loved the hero as well. The historical details seemed very authentic and the story flowed smoothly with a tight plot and interesting characters. Looking forward to the other brothers' stories. (Grade: A-)
