About this audiobook
“Candice Bergen is unflinchingly honest” (The Washington Post), and in A Fine Romance she describes her first marriage at age thirty-four to famous French director Louis Malle; her overpowering love for her daughter, Chloe; the unleashing of her inner comic with Murphy Brown; her trauma over Malle’s death; her joy at finding new love; and her pride at watching Chloe blossom.
In her decidedly nontraditional marriage to the insatiably curious Louis, Bergen takes readers on world travels to the sets where each made films. Pregnant with Chloe at age thirty-nine, this mature primigravida also recounts a journey through motherhood that includes plundering the Warner Bros. costume closets for Halloween getups and never leaving her ever-expanding menagerie out of the fun. She offers priceless, behind-the-scenes looks at Murphy Brown, from caterwauling with Aretha Franklin to the surreal experience of becoming headline news when Dan Quayle took exception to her character becoming a single mother. Bergen tackles familiar rites of passage with moving honesty: the rigors of caring for a spouse in his final illness, getting older, and falling in love again after she was tricked into a blind date.
By the time the last page is turned, “we’re all likely to be wishing Bergen herself—funny, insightful, self-deprecating, flawed (and not especially concerned about that), and slugging her way through her older years with bemused determination—was living next door” (USA TODAY).
Candice Bergen
Candice Bergen’s film credits include The Sand Pebbles, Carnal Knowledge, Starting Over (for which she received an Oscar nomination), and Miss Congeniality. On television, she made headlines as the tough-talking broadcast journalist and star of Murphy Brown, for which she won five Emmys and two Golden Globes. She later starred with James Spader and William Shatner in the critically acclaimed series Boston Legal.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5She is a really funny person and it shows in her writing style. Also, seemingly honest and down to earth. Good read to catch up with her life sans Malle.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Engaging from start to finish. I highly recommend this memoir.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Good memoir. I enjoyed the audio book read by author Candice Bergen.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Candice Bergen had had a very interesting life. She tells he stories well making it enjoyable.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Honest, human, interesting, insightful. You’ll find a thoughtful, perceptive person as well as enjoy details of her unique, interesting life.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Her voice and honest stories!!! She makes me happy. Please listen.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I enjoyed this book & Candice’s perspectives on her marriages as she is very self-aware. Certainly a life of privilege but not someone to flaunt it. I particularly liked her wit & insight into people & relationships. Clearly a thinking, self-effacing, humorous & dedicated person to those she loves. An easy leisurely read at 1.8 speed as too slow at 1.0.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Absolutely loved it. Candice had me laughing and chuckling so much. It has been a total delight to listen to her reading to me. My every waking moment I would pop in my earpods to cut out every outside noise, and listen only to her voice. I could not get enough. I did not want it to end. But sadly, it must. Candice and Louis romance was wonderful, and through this book, I felt I was a part of it, even just slightly. And I must confess to feeling a little betrayed on Louis behalf when she fell in love with Marshall. But then, another, very different, love affair commenced.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book is a follow-up to Bergen's Knock Wood and covers her marriage to Louis Malle and his later death, the birth of her child Chole, her Murphy Brown and Boston Legal years, as well as her current marriage to Marshall Rose. Again, Bergen tries to figure out why things are handed to her. Yes, she worked hard on Murphy Brown but she grew up in Hollywood royalty and was drop dead gorgeous. There is a lot of humor and wit in the book but I at times I also felt there was a big of bragging about her financial situation. I wish she had spent more time covering the charities she supports (not just monetarily but with her time) but maybe she doesn't really do that.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5In this book Bergen really comes into her own, both as a storyteller and as an actress. Building on her earlier autobiography, Knock Wood, in this book Bergen carries on from motherhood, through widowhood to new love. An honest look at her strengths and weaknesses - I mean really, when was the last time anyone in Hollywood straight out admitted they were fat because they loved eating - this was an engaging, illuminating book. Worth reading.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I've always liked Candice Bergen, but not crazy about this book.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I love Candice Bergen. While this second memoir isn't quite as good to me as Knock Wood, I did enjoy reading it. I think I might enjoy this better as an audio book with her reading it. Might try that later.
