About this audiobook

With Give and Take, Adam Grant not only introduced a landmark new paradigm for success but also established himself as one of his generation's most compelling and provocative thought leaders. In Originals he again addresses the challenge of improving the world, but now from the perspective of becoming original: choosing to champion novel ideas and values that go against the grain, battle conformity, and buck outdated traditions. How can we originate new ideas, policies, and practices without risking it all?

Using surprising studies and stories spanning business, politics, sports, and entertainment, Grant explores how to recognize a good idea, speak up without getting silenced, build a coalition of allies, choose the right time to act, and manage fear and doubt; how parents and teachers can nurture originality in children; and how leaders can build cultures that welcome dissent. Learn from an entrepreneur who pitches his start-ups by highlighting the reasons not to invest, a woman at Apple who challenged Steve Jobs from three levels below, an analyst who overturned the rule of secrecy at the CIA, a billionaire financial wizard who fires employees for failing to criticize him, and a TV executive who didn't even work in comedy but saved Seinfeld from the cutting-room floor. The payoff is a set of groundbreaking insights about rejecting conformity and improving the status quo.

Great insights that are immediately applicable to anyone in business looking to make a significant change. I am working on an effort and we just started putting together the framework for a broad coalition. And then I heard Adam’s chapter on coalition building and it completed changed my strategy. I’m psyched to test his approach.

Lots of wisdom packed into this book. I’ve recommended this to a dozen folks.

Many good ideas. But some sections were more interesting than others. Thought too much text was used to describe the impact of birth order on originality.

This was one of those books that can potentially change your life. In my case, it gave me permission to take chances I wouldn't have otherwise. It also taught me change many of the uninformed ideas I had about creativity. Science is awesome!

There is a lot of useful information - it is worth the read just to hear about the procrastination required to bring Martin Luther King Jr’s ‘I have a dream’ speech to life. But the author has a very annoying tone and likes to name drop top business people he knows which gets increasingly annoying. There is one part that is particularly grating when he says he made up some information earlier in the book, just to prove a point that this sort of technique works! It’s ok but does not have any of the life-changing insights it promises.

Lot of great insights, but a bit wordy. This book explores a lot of ideas on how to think creatively. It has real world cases on how to get people to follow your vision and how to run a company and even parts about how to raise children. They're actually quite a few useful ideas that I never thought of before. All the fear of negative is way more powerful then the gain from positive even if they're equal. Another one that I found really good was to tell your children to be something not to do or stop doing something, the example is instead of asking them to share you tell them to be a sharer.

The first several chapters are focused and on topic with presentating the differences in conformists and non-conformists. It’s loses impact as it goes on.

I went through High School and college justifying my non-conformism by saying I was a non- non- conformist --that is, I was rebelling against my peer group who were rebelling against their parents.I was, therefore, relieved to read in this book that to be non-conformist is good. In fact the book went so far as to say that it doesn't take guts to follow the crowd; courage and intelligence lie in being ready to be different.I'm not an entrepreneur or somebody who has made a huge difference to the world, but I'm comfortable in my skin and happy with what I have achieved. This perhaps springs from being Original.Thank you Adam Grant.

This book was stunning from beginning to end. For all of the non-conformists who have felt the exhaustion of constantly swimming against the current - this book will remind you that being creative, original, and visionary is a gift and leave you empowered to move the world.

I really enjoyed this book. I started understanding how I might be viewed at work and the difference it makes on whether you are in the middle or the extremes. Also, trying to be non-conformist for the sake of it does not work. You really have to be a non-conformist.

Ironically enough, this book really wasn't all that "original." It felt like a compilation of pretty basic management advice under the guise of having a common thread of fostering "originality." There are some things I will take away from it, but overall, meh...
