About this audiobook

An electrifying debut in the tradition of Michael Crichton, World War Z, and The Martian, Sleeping Giants is a thriller fueled by an earthshaking mystery-and a fight to control a gargantuan power.

A girl named Rose is riding her new bike near her home in Deadwood, South Dakota, when she falls through the earth. She wakes up at the bottom of a square hole, its walls glowing with intricate carvings. But the firemen who come to save her peer down upon something even stranger: a little girl in the palm of a giant metal hand.

Seventeen years later, the mystery of the bizarre artifact remains unsolved-its origins, architects, and purpose unknown. Its carbon dating defies belief; military reports are redacted; theories are floated, then rejected.

But some can never stop searching for answers.

Rose Franklin is now a highly trained physicist leading a top secret team to crack the hand's code. And along with her colleagues, she is being interviewed by a nameless interrogator whose power and purview are as enigmatic as the provenance of the relic. What's clear is that Rose and her compatriots are on the edge of unraveling history's most perplexing discovery-and figuring out what it portends for humanity. But once the pieces of the puzzle are in place, will the result prove to be an instrument of lasting peace or a weapon of mass destruction?

Author

Sylvain Neuvel

Sylvain Neuvel has taught linguistics in India and worked as a software engineer in Montreal. He is also a certified translator, though he wishes he were an astronaut. His girlfriend would have him believe that he has too many toys, so he writes about aliens and giant robots as a blatant excuse to build action figures (for his son, of course). His debut, Sleeping Giants, was described by NPR as “one of the most promising series kickoffs in recent memory.”

The concept , I believe ,was prior to The Illuminea Files. But is was very simple to that. I finally got used to the voices that beard the book in here, but they just didn’t go with the character I think. Story was pretty cool - Only 4 out of 5.

The first third of this book was very rough but the last two thirds were great. At first characters that were supposed to be smart and science focused were acting very stupid and unscientific. Also the story format- the story as told second hand through interviews- was very removed from the action and created a very detached emotionless tone.

But as the characters, especially our main protagonist evolved, suddenly the story format starts working. And in act 2, the devilishly calculating genius of our protagonist (while advertised in the description, Rose is far from the protagonist) becomes brilliantly displayed.
The dialogue is superbly written and acted.
The last two thirds of this book make the beginning well worth wading through.

Intriguing, mesmerising, masterfully narrated, this novel was hell of an experience. Can recommend it to everyone, sci-fi fan or not.

i found the book a bit too methodical, though on the up side there were no glaring plot holes as in so many books. in other words well constructed, if a bit too much so.

I don't usually like multi-cast narrated books, but this one was very well produced. The story is a great take on a classic sci-fi trope. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Started out great. Not sure if I can finish it though. It became a little boring. The story is told in case files so theres that too.

3.5 stars. The premise of this book pulled me in from the beginning and I was excited about the story and seeing what would unfold. I ended up having mixed feelings about the interview/journal method of storytelling as it seemed to make it more difficult to connect with the characters. I also wanted more exploration of the implications of the discoveries in the book and hopefully these will be fleshed out as the series continues. I would recommend this engaging read for people interested in science fiction who don't mind the narrative style or necessarily want lots of character development.

Sleeping Giants is a fantastic story that is very reminiscent of the Pacific Rim franchise. The interview format of writing worked fairly well on audiobook. The performance of the main narrator was impeccable, while others not always so much. The premise was so fun that I was willing to overlook some of the books minor flaws, but I couldn't help but to wish that Claire North or Neil Gaiman hadn't of written the book instead. Overall, a fun and enjoyable read that is worth the marvelous Political/Sci-Fi adventure that it takes you on!

Guuuurl I hate sci-fi, but this was interesting!
I wasn’t a fan of “log entries” and “interview transcript” type of narrative because it’s all jumpy and hard to follow, but I listened to audiobook version and full cast really made a difference. The pace was fast, maybe even too fast at some points. Overall, a pretty decent book, so I’m continuing with the trilogy.

Not even sure if I just read a science fiction book... I would say that there are some elements of science fiction that are central to the development of the characters. It is somewhat exasperating that the science fiction elements remain unexplained and are never understood . The book is written in an "interview" of "report" fashion that is not really suitable to convey technical details of the sleeping giants. The origin of the giants is addressed in a very casual way and does not explain in depth their purpose and use. On the other hand, the characters are nicely developed and towards the end of the book, you start to like the unknown but powerful person performing the interviews.

This story was amazing in so many ways. The cast was great at their dialogues and the story was somewhat believable although the science in a few places were not consistent or accurate. There were times that the story was slow or trying to prove a point which became a bit tiresome. The rest was witty, funny, intriguing, and some places dark. There were some places where you actually begin to wonder where are they going and it actually doesn't go anywhere.

I don't think I would be interested in reading the actual print, but I know I am going to love listening to the story again. Yes I loved it.

Great listen. Not predictable. Intriguing concept with excellent performances. I tend to look at Amazon reviews before downloading an audiobook. I am glad I did not this time - while well reviewed on Amazon, many of the Amazon reviews talk about a disappointment in the writing style and character development. This was not remotely an issue with the audiobook as the characters are very, very well defined and developed. The performances, as noted, are excellent - and very well directed. The story itself is not contrived, not a repeat of other sci-fi stories and has twists and turns that make one go... wow. Look forward to more of this author's work.

I absolutely loved the unique style of writing in this book, it was a breath of fresh air. The fact that each character had their own narrator was brilliant. I could not stop listening! This book is nail biting and intriguing beyond belief. You will be trying to guess what’s happening while also expanding your way of thinking. I never wanted to get out of the car while listening, just one more chapter! Read or listen to this today, you will not be disappointed.
