About this audiobook

In the latest Kate Daniels novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews, magic is coming and going in waves in post-Shift Atlanta-and each crest leaves danger in its wake.…

After breaking from life with the Pack, mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate-former Beast Lord Curran Lennart-are adjusting to a very different pace. While they're thrilled to escape all the infighting, Curran misses the constant challenges of leading the shapeshifters.

So when the Pack offers him its stake in the Mercenary Guild, Curran seizes the opportunity-too bad the Guild wants nothing to do with him and Kate. Luckily, as a veteran merc, Kate can take over any of the Guild's unfinished jobs in order to bring in money and build their reputation. But what Kate and Curran don't realize is that the odd jobs they've been working are all connected.

An ancient enemy has arisen, and Kate and Curran are the only ones who can stop it-before it takes their city apart piece by piece.…

Ilona Andrews

“Ilona Andrews” is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian, and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.) They have co-authored four New York Times and USA Today bestselling series: the urban fantasy of Kate Daniels, rustic fantasy of the Edge, paranormal romance of Hidden Legacy, and Innkeeper Chronicles. They live in Texas with their two children and many dogs and cats.

3.5/5 stars. The previous book felt to me like both an ending and a beginning, and this book very neatly starts a new life for Kate, Curran, and Julie, living in suburbia and dealing with the cashflow problems of a former Beast Lord and his Consort. Because this is Kate and Curran, they can't get away from the things they thought they were leaving behind--at least for the required ninety days--with the new Consort showing up for breakfast and the new Pack Leader not far behind. Those aren't the only problems brought to their table, though they were the easiest solved. George of Clan Heavy comes to them upset over her missing fiance and the reasons why and how his disappearance can't be investigated by the Pack are clear, so Kate and Curran step in. This leads to an obviously well-researched foray into Islam and Middle Eastern/North African/Arabic mythology that treats the religion and history with respect while forming a nemesis that's powerful and dangerous without being a stereotype.

I am really enjoying this new life for Kate and Curran (and especially Curran because I like him a lot more without all his Pack responsibilities holding him back).

Another exciting installment in the Kate Daniels series. In this one, Kate and Curran are settling into their lives outside the Keep when a friend of theirs goes missing, which seems to be related to some new big bad in town...I love seeing her grow into her power while still remaining a loyal and loving friend. She is pretty much everything I want in a hero and strong female character.

Kate Daniels is at it again. I read this book the week it came out, and it was fun and good to hear from Kate and Curran again. The previous Magic Verbs book felt like a finale. What do you do after all your plot lines have ended? Raise the stakes. Now instead of just protecting herself and her family, Kate has to make sure all of Atlanta is safe. And without the support of the Pack or really any of her allies. There's plenty of magic and action. If you've made it this far into the series, you don't need me to tell you how enjoyable it is. I'm looking forward to the next installment!

The latest Kate Daniels adventure is one of the best yet, I think. This was an emotional roller coaster that dragged me along kicking and screaming, tearing my heart out. I loved it. I'll update more later, but you get the idea.

MAGIC SHIFTS is the first book after Curran and Kate left the pack. I was really excited to see how they would live their life now and I wasn't disappointed. I really enjoyed the storyline and the fight that Kate and Curran found themselves in. They left the pack, but their allies wouldn't let them leave them and I really enjoyed how they rallied around Kate and Curran. Now that Kate knows her father and they have a sorta kinda relationship, it was interesting to see them interact. They got together in the most unlikely place that made them seem like the two normal people they are definitely not. Fun times. Some thoughts on things you won't understand until you read MAGIC SHIFTS. *Warning they can be a little spoiler-ish, so go forward at your own risk.* There was some really hard things to read in MAGIC SHIFTS. A character was very close to death and never having heard them give up before, it was really hard to hear them do so now. I balled my eyes out, messy crying at its finest during this point in the book. I LOVED when Kate visited the casino, EPIC! I am really excited for the time that Kate and Curran become pregnant, but I really hope the prediction made (by the bad guy) towards the end of MAGIC SHIFTS is not something that comes true. I can't think of anything in MAGIC SHIFTS that I didn't enjoy. I loved the character development and I loved how the storyline progressed. Bring me more Kate!* This book was provided free of charge from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Book 9 can't come soon enough. It could come out tomorrow and it would've been a day too late. If you're considering reading this series or this book my recommendation is, "yes." If you want action, a bit of mystery and cool monsters you've come to the right place. Read it. Read them all, then read them again for good measure.

What makes a good book....the plot, storyline, & characters. What makes a great book....everything in a good book plus that little extra like wit, charm, comedy, danger, friendship, honor, and love. What makes a fantastic book .... everything in a great book plus a mixture of words at just the right moment that moves the reader so much that they laugh or giggle out loud or silently cry tears as they read a passage. This book is a fantastic read! My only regret is having to wait another year for the next book.

I loved this book! It amazes me how this series is able to continue to get better and better with each new installment. I don't pre-order a lot of books but this is a book that I ordered several months ago and have been eagerly awaiting the day it would magically appear on my kindle. I was more than a little excited to jump back into the Kate Daniels world and I am happy to report that this book lived up to my expectations. This book is a changing point for Kate and Curran. They have left the Pack and have moved into a suburban neighborhood. Even though they have left the Pack, the politics of the Pack still seem to find a spot in their lives. The Pack and all of its members have been such important parts of the series that I am glad to see that they still play an active role in this book. The difference is really seen in Kate and Curran. They no longer have to act in a certain way just because of their Pack position although Curran did seem to be holding back a bit.Of course, Kate and Curran find themselves in the middle of major problem when George comes to them asking for help in finding Eduardo. George's father, Mahon, is not actively looking for Eduardo since he does approve of their relationship. Due to Pack politics, since the clan leader isn't actively looking the new Beast Lord, Jim, would have trouble stepping in . Kate and Curran are no longer bound by Pack politics so they agree to help. Atlanta seems to also have some kind of presence that may put everyone in danger. Hordes of Ghouls, mutant creatures with regenerative powers, plus a few giants have put the whole city on alert. Kate and Curran need to secure the city and find Eduardo in order to keep everyone safe.I am in awe of how many things this writing pair does consistently right. They have created such a unique and intriguing world that never ceases to be exciting. The characters are by far some of the best, if not the best, that I have come across on the written page. I not only adore both Kate and Curran but the other characters in the story are equally amazing. There is a lot of action in this book and I found the pacing of the story to be excellent. There was never a single dull moment for me. The dialog in this story was fantastic and I love how they are able to inject a perfect amount of humor into the overall story. This is a series that really needs to be read in order. I think that readers who try to start with this book will really miss a lot and will most likely feel a bit lost. I highly recommend this entire series and honestly think that most readers will be able to find something to appreciate in this world. I will continue to read and re-read anything that I can get my hands on from this writing pair. Bravo, Ilona Andrews!

Magic Shifts is proving difficult for me to get words for. It wasn't as emotional as the last couple of books have been, but addictive to read of course. I really liked the incorporation of middle eastern myths and the continual build of Roland's plot line. I absolutely love Kate and Curran's dynamic along with their friends this book. Magic Shifts really gets back to the formula of a supernatural mystery to solve and butts to kick, which was lots of fun.

This most recent Kate Daniels adventure has she and Curran living in the suburbs with Julie and adjusting to not being the Beast Lord and the Consort. When their friend Eduardo disappears, they are determined to find him. There are also issues with ghouls organizing themselves into large groups and a magical jewel granting wishes and turning people into giants. Kate and Curran also have to get involved in the Mercenary Guild before is manages to destroy itself. Between them, they own 36% of it and, with their current cash flow problems, it would be quite a loss to them. Besides, Curran is a leader and needs a new challenge. Whipping the Guild into shape would be a good thing for him to do. Along with all that we also have Kate's father building a new tower right outside Atlanta. Kate has some major father issues and I love the interactions between the two of them. This story focuses on the mythology of the Middle East for its magical creatures. Fans of this excellent urban fantasy series won't want to miss this episode.

Excellent installment in the series. I like the direction they are going with, toward the ultimate confrontation with Roland and slightly away from the introductory settings of the Pack and Kate's professional life. I also think the fight sequences have gotten more coherent.

I still enjoyed it but I didn't think it was as fleshed out as past books and there was A LOT of recap. Every character introduced, every magic item used, every magic/tech shift, every past even mentioned, I found it really disruptive and it just plain took up a lot of the words in the book, leaving less room for actual new plot and development.

Well, that ending wasn't what I expected. Somewhere in the last year I got the idea that something happened to one of the characters and I went through this whole book waiting for it, braced for it. And it didn't happen. This is good, because what I'd braced for was bad, so it was like the book ended with an extra special cherry on top. Is it wrong that I liked the scenes with Roland? The verbal sparring, the sly repartee and dry humour - they just ended up being my favourite scenes in the book. The Andrews' continue to mine mythology for story lines and it keeps the stories fresh and interesting. Moving out of the keep stops the clan politics from taking over the books as they'd threatened to do and I'm looking forward to seeing where all the changes end up. My only worry at this point is this: you can only hold a threat over someone's head of doom for so long before it loses its power and impact. This holds true for the reader as well and no matter how good the writing is, the anticipation is going to wear thin. But then again, I've heard this series might be in the home stretch; if that's true, I have nothing to worry about except having to say goodbye to these characters, and that's going to be a sad, sad day. Until then, bring on more Kate and Curran! (*cough*roland*cough*)

    Audiobook: Narrator – Renee Raudman
As always, this narrator brings this story and most importantly, these characters to life. I was especially moved by her portrayal of Mitchell and the pure emotion she evoked within me due to her interpretation of his voice and mannerisms in speaking. So much so, I was tearing up. She does a spectacular job and when I’m reading the books, I hear her “Kate” voice in my head.

What an emotionally charged, drama filled, addition to the series! This one left me gasping and teary eyed at times. It was also quite humorous when you consider that Curran is trying to live a “normal” life. Loved all the little secrets that popped up along the way. I’ve become so attached to these characters that they feel a part of my life now and I’m going to miss them when I reach the end. But then again, that’s what rereads and re-listens are for!

Another strong entry in the Kate Daniels series. This one steps it back a bit from an arc-driven book to a case-driven book, but the case brings in an opportunity for learning and a possible solution for Kate's problem with her father -- whose character is fleshing out. I also enjoyed the character of Luther, and the set-up for Curran's next thing -- because post-retirement gigs are challenging to figure out.

There was a time I get bored a bit with this series but now I'm again fully enjoying the adventures of Kate and Current.

After the events in the previous book, Currant and Kate left the Pack to live a completely different life. Now, Kate owns the whole Atlanta as her territory and to her that of course means that she has to protect the city. And the threat is real with the unseen hordes of ghouls coming to Atlanta, the giants and some dangerous old magic.

One of the best thing of this book is that there is lot of Curran in the story. I think his interaction with Kate and their blossoming relationship is one of the most fascinating parts of this book and the whole series. I'm glad that there no serious break up between them or some other ridiculous things we constantly meet in other books. Them supporting each other to the point we see in Magic Shifts is great.

I also enjoyed the whole idea behind the plot. It is fresh and unobvious, and it gives us tones of action and witty dialogues.

A very good addition to the series that makes me read another book really soon.

Disappointing. Plot threads introduced then dropped, horrible things happening without any seeming long-term consequences, and generally a whole lot of motion with little progress. It feels very much like the middle book of a trilogy, lots of time spent positioning and laying the groundwork for the Big Finish.

This book is the start of a new story arc in the series. Everyone now knows who Kate’s father is, Curran is no longer the Beast Lord and Ghastek is now in charge of the vampires in Atlanta. Kate and Curran are in a 90 day holding pattern from stepping down from the pack. And even when they are not supposed to be doing anything with the pack, members of the pack come to them for help. Georgina is looking for her werebuffalo boyfriend that has gone missing from his Guild job. Her father, the leader of the werebears will not help her since he doesn’t approve of her choice of mate. Also Kate is trying to find out why so many ghouls are attacking the city. Turns out that both plots are part of the villain getting revenge on the descendants of people who did him wrong in the past. The story is fast moving and surprising little feeling of infodumping to bring the reader up to speed on what has previously happened in the series. This isn’t the worst place for a new reader to start since Kate and Curran are starting a new phase in their lives but it would spoil just about every bit of the previous books.
A fun read and I can’t wait for the next book to come out

I'm constantly amazed that this series never flags -- it's consistently excellent, hilarious, fierce and delightful. The adventures are wonderfully unpredictable, Atlanta continues to decay, and the nearly nonstop action is perfectly offset by absurd, mundane moments that perfectly capture difficult familial relationships.

I didn’t think it was possible, but somehow Magic Shifts manages to cement my love for this series even more. It’s such a treat to finally see Kate and Roland in the same room together, both of them trying to feel the other out. I can’t wait to see what happens between these two. Based on the clues that are dropped in Magic Shifts, I’m really going to enjoy the direction the overarching plot is headed. The supporting characters continue to be awesome. The one problem with having such a great cast is that I always want more page time with each of my favorite people. Each of them had their moment, but I still wanted more Desandra, more Robert and Thomas, more Derek, more… you get the idea. In Magic Shifts, we even get a new supporting character, Luther, who is smart, powerful, and wonderfully snarky. I really hope he returns in future books. As always, the banter between Kate and Curran is so much fun. Their relationship just grows stronger with every book as they face new, sometimes heartbreaking challenges. Even though the sex scenes in the last couple of books have felt (at least to me) more awkward than steamy, I still love Kate and Curran as a couple and can’t help rooting for them. Besides, I’m not just reading this series for the romance; there’s so much more to appreciate - the epic fight scenes, the worldbuilding, the badass magic, the compelling plot… the list goes on.In short, Magic Shifts is everything I expected and more. A combination of drama, action, and Andrews’ trademark humor, the story is a pure delight to read. I’m torn between wanting the next book in my hands this very minute and never wanting this excellent series to end.

Magic Shifts is the eighth book in the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. The implications of the ending of the last book play off in spades in this installment. There is so much going on and it all weaves together brilliantly. The impact of Kate's claiming is starting to be revealed, how the Pack is handling their shake up plus where Kate and Curran take their life next, all combined with the breathless action and interesting mythology that I love about these books. This far into the series I still have no idea how the writers manage to pack so much depth into less than 350 pages.Kate and Curran are relationship goals. For whatever reason pop culture tends to portray unhealthy relationships on tv and in movies more often than not. It is refreshing to have two main characters who love each other for who they are, embracing their strengths and weaknesses, work together on their problems, are supportive of each other through the bad and good, and do it all in a, for this world, healthy manner. Both characters have grown through the series and they've done it together. This is easily my favorite book in the series so far. About the only thing missing was more of Roland. Somehow I doubt that will be an issue in the remaining two books.

The first time I read Magic Bites I didn't get why there were so many rave reviews. I mean it seemed pretty average. The world building was cool and Kate seemed alright but a bit standoffish. The romance between Kate and Crest was mediocre - it seemed like she didn't like him at all and it felt forced and awkward. The romance between her and Curran wasn't any better. It didn't make sense why he followed her home while he was on his date. I liked Derek and Ghastek was creepy. There was lots of snappy, witty dialogue and I had a few laughs - but I was just confused. It was good but it wasn't great. Yeah - read the rest of the series. It gets SO MUCH BETTER. Kate stops being standoffish and starts letting people in. Derek becomes a total badass. Ghastek - well he's still pretty creepy. But also funny and kind and sweet when he wants to be. And Curran - I love him now. He is an absolute ass in this first book. But I forgot. He becomes everything you want in a love interest. There's a ton of new loveable characters; Julie, Andrea, Aunt Bea, Raphael, Barbaras. Some new evil ones; Hugh, Roland. So much action and adventure and intensity and laughs. So do yourself a favour. Keep reading. I like that Barbaras and Derek all end up on the same street. And I like that Julie is more involved with the cases. The scene with Curran, Derek and Julie fighting ghouls and Kate freaking out and telling them to leave a note is funny. It's also nice that Curran finds something to occupy himself with (the Mercenary's Guild) - only Curran would find politics fun.
