"Sphere may be Crichton's best novel, but even if it ranked only second or third, it would be a must for suspense fans." -Miami Herald
A classic thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Crichton, Sphere is a bravura demonstration of what he does better than anyone: riveting storytelling that combines frighteningly plausible, cutting-edge science and technology with pulse-pounding action and serious chills. The gripping story of a group of American scientists sent to the ocean floor to investigate an alien ship, only to confront a terrifying discovery that defies imagination, Sphere is Crichton prime-truly masterful fiction from the ingenious mind that brought us Prey, State of Fear, and Jurassic Park.
Sphere was made into a film directed by Barry Levinson, which starred Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, and Samuel L. Jackson.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Another excellent Crichton book. Not as good as The Terminal Man but close.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I was I had seen the movie AFTER reading the book, but it was still a great read. I clearly need to go back and read even more Crichton after this!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Interesting plot, but storytelling got a little tedious, one incredible problem and one incredible solution after another. Still it was worth reading.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Spoiler-free review:This is the first sci-fi book I've read, and the first book by Michael Crichton I've finished. I thought it was incredible. The plot was brilliant and thrilling; I felt my heart drop multiple times throughout the book. Not only was the plot interesting, detailed, and full of surprises, but it was quite humorous. Michael Crichton did a wonderful job of sprinkling humor in to a very understandable sci-fi thriller. I'll definitely be reading other novels by Crichton. I'm surprised this book has an average of only 3.5 stars. I'm guessing the lower reviews are because a few parts of the story were difficult to imagine, but it's can be hard to describe events that involve technical aspects. I never had a problem understanding overall events, though. I would definitely recommend reading this book. It may be 30 years old, but it's the best book I've read in a long time.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Phenomenal and caused me to buy the movie and watch it again. Good movie but the book is still better.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wasnt there a movie to this?? Either way the book beat it and I very much enjoyed it.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5On the whole, this is a fun, fast-paced blend of science fiction and suspense that speaks to exactly how Crichton grew such a reputation as he did. Although there are some dated attitudes and moments which leak into the story--particularly characterization--and may make a contemporary reader cringe, they don't overtake the story or diminish the fascinating bend of the tale as it unfolds. This isn't my favorite of the Crichton books I've read, but it read more quickly than some others and I did enjoy it.I'd absolutely recommend it to readers who want an undersea adventure or a blend of science fiction and suspense to serve up a grand escape.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Another excellent Crichton book. Not as good as The Terminal Man but close.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A wonderful addition to a very under represented genre. Would very much recommend.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Not my favorite. M. C.’s characters here are whiny or ineffectual. Story line is fabulous tho
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A fantastic sci-fi thriller about space and the dangers of humans under pressure. I have to say the characters are so realistic in this book that I am shocked to learn it was written back in 1987!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Gripping story, very nicely related for the audio book. And lots of interesting ideas to think about!
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Each "Chapter" was about a minute and half long, so, not great.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Awesome book. Science based yet held in contrast with the ethereal nature of self. Wild ending, enjoyable read for sure.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This book was an interesting enough time filler but I didn’t love it. Nothing was really ever answered, which can be okay sometimes, but in this instance it left me unsatisfied. I also didn’t care for the character assembly and dynamics of the group. I didn’t feel that the people chosen were suited to the mission at hand. They all relied on one person’s intellect for the most part, where as in Andromeda Strain everyone had a purpose and some useful contribution. Even if they didn’t like each other. Here, no one got along and they were constantly arguing and disagreeing with each other. Some confrontation is of course necessary to keep it interesting but too much it’s just annoying. But I guess that kind of dynamic is what audiences are used to these days.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5The story was a little hard to accept. In a military operation, civilians would never be left completely to themselves this much. The Navy, aside from one guy in charge, were like ghosts in the distance we never saw or interacted with. It was an ok story from a purely storytelling point of view, but it lacked depth and realism. Not one of his better works. It felt a little lazy in comparison to some of his other works.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Interesting. Nice twist. Kept my attention. Finished in two days. Looking forward to reading to reading a other
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Awesome book and reader performance! Scribd is an excellent service! Thanks!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Gripping until the end and the narrator got a hot voice!
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Science-fiction meets horror meets underwater-submarine-adventure: good characters, good plot... But I didn't like the end. It makes no sense and leaves a lot of questions.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is my second time reading this one and it remains one of my favorite Crichton titles, I think because it forces him out of his infodump comfort zone and into a more philosophical place. While there are a few things that don't entirely hold up (some of the racial and gender dynamics are cringey at best) its still something that provokes me to think about long after I've finished.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I'd give this brilliance Six Stars if I could do that.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Compelling, clever story, excellently narrated. Some of the characters are from central casting, but this is a can't-put-it-down yarn nevertheless. Very enjoyable.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Fantastic thriller-scifi-whodunnit, in which the constantly shifting alliances constantly keep you on your toes.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5what a humongous waste of time. expected better from such a popular writer.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Exiting story, but Not the outcome to be expected. I fell like the story drifted from what was initially planned.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Suspense to the very end, makes me wonder if there is there a part 2
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Good yarn. Worth a read. Better than done other Critchon books I've read.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A very sophisticated and entrancing book, makes you really think about how confined our conseption of aliens is
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The book is exploring deeper psychological questions about the shadow side of the human nature in a fast paced and science fiction thriller. I loved it.
