About this audiobook

THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Lieutenant Eve Dallas must hunt down the deadly snipers terrorizing Manhattan in this fast-paced In Death thriller from J. D. Robb.

The shots came quickly, silently, and with deadly accuracy. Within seconds, three people were dead at Central Park’s ice skating rink. The victims: a talented young skater, a doctor, and a teacher. As random as random can be.

Eve Dallas has seen a lot of killers during her time with the NYPSD but never one like this. A review of the security videos reveals that the victims were killed with a tactical laser rifle fired by a sniper, who could have been miles away when the trigger was pulled. And though the list of locations where the shooter could have set up seems endless, the number of people with that particular skill set is finite: police, military, professional killer.

Eve’s husband, Roarke, has unlimited resources—and genius—at his disposal. And when his computer program leads Eve to the location of the sniper, she learns a shocking fact: There were two—one older, one younger. Someone is being trained by an expert in the science of killing, and they have an agenda. Central Park was just a warm-up. And as another sniper attack shakes the city to its core, Eve realizes that though we’re all shaped by the people around us, there are those who are just born evil….

Excellent story and the mist trust of a partner. The case was a very strange one and the investigators had a time figuring it out.
The detective of the homicide did their job and put into the investigation and where it happens to have lost many victims they find out that it was a former police officer who had lost his wife and unborn son. That was responsible for the killings. But the most surprising was that the shooter was fifteen years old. Who was the killer and she was not afraid to do the killings. She also was planning to kill her own mother and stepbrother.
Although she went on after her father was taken down she went on the killing taking more life. Even while in custody she tried to escape and almost succeeded in killing again. She was stiped and now she has created more issues for herself.

Dallas is searching for a pair of long-distance serial killers. Roarke is right in the middle of the action with Dallas. Peabody her faithful partner is at her side though Dallas is having her work a little more on her own though they coordinate the search very effectively. All the many characters make appearances, and Mavis throws Bella a one-year-old birthday party.I wanted to stand up and cheer J.D. Robb is back, her last 2 or 3 In Death books had been disappointing and I was giving up on the series. Glad I ordered from the library becauseThe characters are solid, the plot is twisted, and the action is exciting.

Apprentice in Death by J D RobbFuturistic police procedural book 43. Can be read as a stand-alone but the first 10 or so should be read first and in order.Though this was written several years ago, I read and am writing this review just a couple of days after the Uvalde, TX tragedy. This story has a 15 year old as the killer of 18 people at a concert. The timing of me reading this is unfortunate. Too much gun violence in the U. S. at the moment. It makes me sad and worried and scared for our future as a society. I do love the author’s story-writing and intensity but the violence is starting to bother me. Quotes I liked: “I wasn’t expecting a raging, showboating psychopath inside a teenager.”“..she’s a vicious little bug that needs squashing.”I did find Dallas’s interaction with small toddlers quite amusing. “Why do they stare?”

This series never disappoints. Eve, Peabody and Rourke always get there man. This story has a lot of twists and turns and we get to hear about almost all of the minor characters. I look forward to reading every book in this series.

Apprentice in Death is another good entry in the In Death series. This book focuses on a sniper and the damage that can be done at a distance. The first target is killed at an ice rink along with two others who are killed as cover for the real victim. Eve Dallas and her team must determine which of the three is the target and if there are going to be more victims to come. The story takes a serious turn when midway through the book, we discover who the killer is and the reasons behind the kills. Once again, we get insight into Eve's thought processes and how each case becomes personal to her in some way. My only complaint was that the last third of the book seemed a bit overblown, but the rest of the story was fast paced, interesting, and as always, unique in some way to make the reader want more. Overall, a really good story. How long is it going to take for Hollywood to recognize how good these stories are and find a way to put them on the screen?

The latest installment of the series had Eve and NYPD trying to solve a murder committed by a sniper. Everyone does a great job as usual and thanks for Roarke’s programming skills Eve gets a break that puts her on the killer’s trail that much sooner. There a few cameos at the end with Bella’s birthday party of friends that wouldn’t be in a regular police investigation and there is a nod to previous book as well.

As usual a fun read and picking up one of these books means the bad guys get put in a cage, friends are loyal, and Eve and Roarke love one another very much.

A tense police procedural with terrifying antagonist's and plot twists that keep the pages turning. This is the first J. D. Robb novel I've read but I will be seeking out others.

I had just enough time to squeeze this in before my more serious reading. There's a sharpshooter taking out seemingly unrelated people with a laser gun, from extraordinary distances. Technical know-how delivers locations, and we know soon enough who we are looking for, so the question is how to find the shooter.

The newest serial killer in New York is using a high-powered laser rifle, from a considerable distance indicating a high level of skill, and choose victims that at first glance seem to offer no obvious attraction. The first attack is on ice skaters in Central Park, with three victims: a young woman who's a competitive skater, an obstetrician, and a man celebrating his birthday with his wife. None of them seem to have any enemies. It might be completely random.

Then there's a second hit, with four dead and one wounded, and a pattern starts to emerge. This is definitely a serial killer, and the killer is an exceptional marksman.

Over just a few frighteningly intensive days, Dallas, her crew, and and the entire NYPSD parse the the clues and rush to find the killer before the next hit.

And while they're racing the killer, they're also counting down to Mavis and Leonardo's baby daughter Bella's first birthday.

The characters continue to grow and change in this entry, as Dallas begins to let go of some of the trappings of her pre-Roarke life, Roarke begins to accept more fully that he's not the criminal outlaw he was when he met her, and even Dallas and Summerset begin to accept they're important to each other as well as both being important to Roarke.

Another satisfying entry in the long-running series. Recommended.

I received a free electronic galley of this book from the publisher via NetGalley.

Yet another excellent in death novel. The level of sociopathy displayed in this one was quiet scary, but is fortunately rare in the general population. The fact that the apprentice turns out to be the leader was also a nice twist. I had great difficulty putting this one down. Thoroughly enjoyable read.

I was a Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb snob and only read this book out of curiosity. Knock me over! I enjoyed it - in a thoroughly paperback, beach read way. I even think I'll need to read some of the other books in the "In Death" series. It's a good thing I have 22 years worth of titles to keep me busy. What took me so ling?

We're forty-odd books into the In Death series now, and you'd think that Robb would be finding it a bit difficult to find a new way to get the detectives and officers of New York's murder squad to deal with the deaths and mayhem going on in that vast metropolis, but when the winter wonderland that's Central Park's ice rink becomes the target of a multiple shooting, Eve and the team know it's bad but when other mass shootings - from long-range using high tech military grade weaponry - the city is threatening to fall into panic and chaos. Using a fellow lieutenant's knowledge of his SWAT team, and her own skills, the identity of at least one of the perpetrators is swiftly uncovered. It then becomes a race against time to see if the second perp can be brought into custody before a darker agenda can be brought into play. This is quite a fast paced tale, and If you don't have the tension of working out who-dunnit, the pace of the story keeps those pages turning

I don’t think Dallas catching the bad guys at the end of every story will ever get old! In Death is a lot like the Law & Order of books – it endures because the format and characters are familiar, but each case has just enough “new” to keep people coming back. This was another excellent installment. My favorite aspect of the series is watching the characters evolve. Eve and Roarke have come a long way, and that shows here. They still have fights (what married couple doesn’t), but they make sense and aren’t just for the sake of angst or forced tension. Her evolution also impacts how she views and investigates cases, which really adds to the stories. The case here is a LDSK – long distance serial killer. A sniper. The series is set in the future, but often references the past. Here, Robb actually mentions the DC snipers as a past case example for LDSK! Little things like that are a delight. There’s not as much humor here, due to the horror of the killings, but there are still some lighthearted moments.I always have a good feeling after finishing one of these mysteries, which leaves me eager for the next book. Bring on Echoes in Death!

I don't know how the author can keep up the quality in this series so well. I've lost count of which one this is -- 30 or 40-something -- and they're very formulaic. Even so, there's something about the characters that just keep it interesting and likeable. Eve and Roarke continue to be among my favorite characters in light reading.

I love this series! JD Robb never fails to deliver!I love the mystery and the characters, but I was a little disappointed this time around because I felt like there was less personal interactions between Eve and her friends. While there were the lovely interactions between Eve and Roarke, Eve does not really have any friendly exchanges with Mavis or Leonardo, or her other reluctantly made friends. Part of the charm of the series for me are the friendly exchanges between her friends that completely befuddle Eve. The only exchanges of that manner pretty much took place in the last chapter of the book. Noes! I did love all the BAMF Eve though. And the Summerset appearance was A++!

This story was tightly written and compelling. My most favorite Eve Dallas book to date. Someone or someones have decided to go on a killing spree across NY and the NYPSD takes the lead on tracking down the killer(s). A fast read.

When a sniper shoots three ice skaters at Central Park’s Wollman Rink, Eve Dallas catches the case. A second massacre occurs in Times Square, claiming four lives, including a police officer. Even as Eve hunts the sniper, a bloody massacre at Madison Square Garden follows, involving Summerset. Can Eve track down the culprit before the sniper strikes again? All the expected characters are here, but readers will discover an unforeseen twist or two. Aside from the police business, Roarke and Eve plan some home remodeling and there’s a bit of humor as Bella celebrates her first birthday. Unrelenting action, surprising twists, and strong characters combine to create a tale that will keep readers on the edge of their seats.Highly recommended.

Robb, (Nora Roberts) have possibly produced 43 books in this series and still kept the series fresh and exciting and the host of characters growing and developing? I don't know the answer but she has succeeded beautifully. Even the relationship between Eve and Sommerset took a turn in this one. I have to say Ms. Robb succeeded in giving us a scary moment there. There were also moments of joy and celebration as little Bella turns 2 years old and Eve gets her first view of her new, state of the art, work station. Although many of the later books can be read out of order unless you are one of those people whose head will implode...if you are just starting the series you will benefit in learning how the characters develop and mesh together by starting at book 1, [Naked in Death]. And you'll have the adventure and the joy of 42 others...a marathon reading fest! I keep forgetting just how good this series is until I have the newest one in hand. Looking forward to two new ones in 2017.

This 42nd Eve Dallas futuristic mystery/romance has Eve working the case of a long distance serial killer. The first three victims were picked off at a skating rink. Eve and her team try to find some connection between the three or find out which might have attracted a serial killer. A second shooting in Times Square has five victims. And, again, Eve and her team try to find connections.Roarke helps by developing a software program that enables them to track the shots back to their origin. It is soon plain that the killer must be someone with extensive practice as a sniper. Soon Eve, Roarke, and the team know who the sniper was but now have to track them down before the next shooting happen. Meanwhile, Eve is stressing over attending a birthday party for Mavis's one-year-old daughter Bella. She is also choosing the design for her new home office since she has outgrown the one Roarke first provided for her which was a copy of the office in the apartment she lived in before she met Roarke. I really like the strong relationships in this series. Eve has moved from being a loner to a woman who is deeply loved and who deeply loves and who can expand and deepen her friendships. Despite feeling sometimes that she now has too many friends, Eve has a much richer life than before she met and married Roarke. This book also explores the conflict between nature and nurture as Eve sees some of herself in the killer that she is tracking. She sees someone she could have been had she made different choices in her life. This also explores the variety of mentors in her life and in Roarke's and the way they helped shape the people Eve and Roarke have become. This is a series that never gets old for me. I move each new book to the top of my reading stack and look forward greatly to the next.
