About this audiobook

San Francisco contractor Mel Turner is leading a volunteer home renovation project, and while she expects lots of questions from her inexperienced crew, she can't help asking a few of her own-especially about the haunted house next door . . . the place local kids call the Murder House.

But when volunteers discover a body while cleaning out a shed, questions pile up faster than discarded lumber. Mel notices signs of ghostly activity next door and she wonders: Are the Murder House ghosts reaching out to her for help, or has the house claimed another victim?

Now, surprised to find herself as the SFPD's unofficial "ghost consultant," Mel must investigate murders both past and present before a spooky killer finishes another job.

ghosts, renovation, family-dynamics, friendship, relationship-issues, PTSD, general-contractor, murder, law-enforcement*****Ghosts and corpses seem to seek Mel out while on the job site. This time she is working with a community service agency and I learned a lot about this type of resource. The project is next to a house where most of a family was murdered twenty-five years ago. The surviving son is a Poet Laureate, nearly crippling PTSD from witnessing the massacre, and lives nearby. Good sleuthing by Mel who even agrees to being present at a seance requested by the poet after his sister is found murdered on the same property. Great read made even better by narrator Xe Sands!

Another installment in the Haunted Home Renovation Series...... very interesting...

Mel is taking over the Family construction/renovation business in San Francisco, when she begins volunteering on a local project... renovating homes for not-so-well-off people. The home she is working on is next door to "The Murder House" and Mel can see the faces of the victims looking out at her through the windows....

There are suspects galore, people are not who the appear to be... The local homicide detective asks for Mel's help...... One of the two surviving members of the family that was murdered in the house has also been found dead of an overdose in the shed behind the house. Her brother has been trying to help her overcome her terror of that night.....

They decide to hold a seance and Mel relives the murder through the eyes of the victims, but does not see the murderer......

This is a fast & easy read that it held my interest. I also like being able to look up many of the houses used in the books' settings....

Juliet Blackwell is one of my favorite Paranormal Murder Mystery authors, as I prefer her characters to those of Victoria Laurie (there just isn't as much hysterics & over-the-top drama).

Juliet Blackwell's Haunted Home Renovation series continues to make my enjoyment factor rise. Yes, there are paranormal aspects to the stories, but it's really kept to a minimum-- no ghostly gimmicks to ease the main character's way out of a tight spot in the plot. In Home for the Haunting, I learned a bit more about San Francisco area architecture and real estate, and I enjoyed the volunteer organization Neighbors Together's work to revitalize neighborhoods and make homes safer and more comfortable for their owners. It mirrors the grass roots efforts of many people throughout the country who believe in donating their time and skills. One of the reasons why this series is such a winner is due to its excellent cast. Throughout these books, Mel has been at a sort of crossroads, and Home for the Haunting has her working through her relationship issues with the hunky Graham and with her sister Cookie. She also has some time to come to terms with what she really wants from life. The neighborhood kids are a wonderful addition to the cast, and I was almost in shock when the relationship between Mel and Annette Crawford appeared to thaw a bit.Although I had my suspicions about characters that I should indeed have been wary of, I couldn't quite pinpoint everything they did and how they fit into the plot. Just what I like: a good, keep-you-guessing story. If you're new to the series and wondering if you should start at the beginning, I think you could "test the waters" by reading this book. It will set you up well for both past and present and give you an idea if you want to go back and read the previous books. For background, plot, and characterization, I think you're really going to enjoy Juliet Blackwell's Haunted Home Renovation series. It's a winner.

After knuckling down and getting through several "meh" cozies in my pile, weeding out the series that needed to go, I decided it was time to read a cozy from The Pile that I knew would be a winner. Juliet Blackwell is one of those authors: I really enjoy everything she writes. I first discovered her as Hailey Lind, co-authoring with her sister a cozy series centered on a reformed art forger. That series was both frustrating and engrossing at once. It ended much too soon, but was replaced by Ms. Blackwell's Witchcraft series and her Haunted Home Renovation series. Both excellent entertainment. Home for the Haunting is the fourth in the series and, in my opinion, each book is better, and sometimes a bit scarier, than the last. These are old fashioned ghost stories, pure and simple. Mel is a historic renovation contractor, bringing back old homes to their former glory. A perfect setting for ghosts! This time it's the house next door to her rehab job that's haunted; the scene of a double-murder/suicide decades earlier. I like Mel; she's a little bit odd - especially her wardrobe choices - but likeable in much the same way one finds an old curmudgeon endearing. She has a nice family and a good couple of friends that make up her inner circle. There are no clichéd caricatures of nemesis here. Graham is the love interest, but this is a back burner, low flame romance. Glaciers move faster and the reader would probably see more action out of them, but I don't say that as a criticism. He's around often enough that he isn't the author's afterthought or begrudging addition, it's just that the romance is more a soft hum that runs through the background. I like the plot a lot. The old houses and the nature of Mel's work lend themselves to old stories/cold cases that somehow feel more interesting and less horrifying than if they happened in the present. The cold case nature allows for a "what if?" that hooks me. There's also a current-day dead body, but really, the old tragedy is the focus. I don't know if I was just too busy enjoying the ghost story to guess the murderer, or if the author was crafty with the clues; either way, I didn't identify the killer until Mel did. I thought the ending was done well too; another author avoiding the TSTL moments in favour of the MC doing the sane and rational thing, while still giving the reader a fraught ending with a bit of twisted justice. If you like your murders cozy and enjoy ghost stories you can read in bed at night without having to sleep with the lights on, I can recommend giving this series a try. The first book is probably the weakest, but still enjoyable, and any of these books can be read out of order for those that aren't sticklers. I can't wait for #5.

In Blackwell’s paranormal mystery novel, Mel Turner is a building contractor in San Francisco working with her father at Turner Construction. Feeling a need to volunteer in her community, she is leading a volunteer home renovation project. When volunteers discover a dead body while cleaning out a shed, Mel notices signs of ghostly activity in and around the house next door—a house the neighbors refer to as the “Murder House”—a home where a father allegedly murdered most of his family twenty-five years ago. Mel can’t help but suspect that the ghosts of that long ago tragedy are reaching out to her for help. To her surprise, Mel finds herself the SFPD’s unofficial “paranormal consultant,” when the lead detective on the case asks for her “special skills.”An absolute winning combination of mystery, architectural history, likable characters, and a ghostly ending that will leave you shuddering. A stellar addition to the A Haunted Home Renovation Mystery series.
