About this audiobook

Prized for his unbeatable tracking skills, Ewen "Hunter" Lamont accepts a dangerous assignment: locate a missing undercover courier. But this is no ordinary target. Ewen has met his prey before as "Sister Genna," a fiery, forbidden woman forever etched in his memory after one stolen, sinful kiss. Now that he knows her real identity, he's more determined than ever to keep her safe. But without the protection of the veil between them, fighting the allure of the beautiful lass may be the toughest battle this extraordinary warrior has ever faced.

After her ill-fated attempt three years ago to rescue her twin sister, Janet of Mar has found salvation acting as a royal messenger-until she surrenders to a darkly handsome warrior whose rough, sensual kisses stir feelings the woman in her can't deny. But when betrayal leads to danger and a crucial communique is put in jeopardy, Janet has no choice but to put her faith in the hunter who can find anything-perhaps even her heart.

Monica McCarty

Monica McCarty is the bestselling author of the Highland Guard series, the MacLeods of Skye trilogy, and the Campbell trilogy. Her interest in the Scottish clan system began in the most unlikely of places: a comparative legal history course at Stanford Law School. After realizing that her career as a lawyer and her husband’s transitory life as a professional baseball player were not exactly a match made in heaven, she traded in her legal briefs for Scottish historical romances with sexy alpha heroes. Monica McCarty lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and their two children.

The Hunter by Monica McCarty is the seventh book in her Highland Guard series. This book focuses on Ewen “Hunter” Lamont and Janet of Mar. It is a riveting story about damaged characters you want to succeed in their personal journey as well as to find their way to each other. All of the books in the series are about a different member of Robert the Bruce’s secret band of elite warriors know as the Highland Guard but Robert’s bid for the Scottish throne is difficult one and a long battle to be won. Learning about the journey from each of his warriors is an excellent way to experience all of the difficult aspects of this part of Scotland’s history.Even though the book can stand on it’s own the story is much richer an experience if you read them in order. We are introduced to Janet of Mar in the previous book in the series, “The Recruit” and you just knew there would be more about her in the future as well as about Hunter who is also mentioned in previous books.I could repeat what the publisher tells you about the book but you can only say the same thing so many different ways. What I would say is that if you love to read about characters who are not perfect, who try to make a difference in their world and who willing to sacrifice everything for a cause they believe in then this book, as well as all of the books in the series are for you.You will laugh, you will cry, at times you will even hold your breath, but in the end, the journey that you take with Janet and Ewen will be one you will not forget and you will be glad you were able to “share” it with them by reading the book.Monica McCarty writes such rich historical stories and one of my favorite things about her books is that in the back of each of them she tells you exactly what was historical in her book and where she took some license to make the story work better. Don’t skip the Author’s Notes in the back of the books, you will appreciate the story even more after reading them.I can’t wait for the eighth book in the series which is about Robert “The Raider” Boyd, due out in 2014.

I did not realize this was the 7th book in the series when I requested this from the Early Reviewers program. I am not one to pick up a book and read it in the middle of a series so I went back to the beginning. This is a wonderful series. I had moved away from this time period in my reading as it had become a bit boring, but this series has brought me back. This particular book is fast paced and a pleasure to read. I am looking forward continuing the series. Ms. McCarty is now on my must read authors list.

I received this book as an advanced copy from Library Thing. I am usually dead set against reading a series out of order but as this is Book 7 I did not want to wait to read the others first before reading this and writing my review. And although there are some obvious references to other characters and previous story lines, this book can easily stand on its own.I enjoy historical romance and this book did not disappoint. Set in the early 1300s, Ewan "The Hunter" Lamont is a typical alpha male highland warrior with a wounded past. Named "The Hunter" because of his exceptional tracking skills, he is tasked with finding a missing courier. He has met this courier before a Sister Genna and felt guilty about his strong feelings for the beautiful woman of the cloth. But Sister Genna is really Janet of Mar whose sister was previously married to the king. She is a strong willed and brave woman doing her part to help her king. I liked the fact that she was no damsel in distress but instead an equal match for Ewan. They of course have to fight their attraction to each other, especially as Ewan has been told by the king that he is to find Janet and bring her back to be married to another. There is plenty of action to keep the reader intrigued and a HEA ending as to be expected.I am looking forward to reading the other books in this series.

Ewen Lamont is "the hunter". Janet of Mar has tried unsuccessfully to rescue her sister. Ewen has been after her for awhile and when things go badly, Janet has to put herself in his hands. I am a sucker for anything Scottish or Highland, so this book is right up my alley. Anyone who enjoys these kinds of books is sure to love this one.

I love the silent moody type, what can I say? Ewen Lamont was a wonderful surprise as well as the heroine of the story. A lot of action scenes, powerful scenes and of course, steamy and sexy scenes with a fierce Highlander. What more can a girl want?Again Monica McCarty delivers what is expected of her: a wonderful romance full with facts, romance and history.I can't wait for the next one.

Another wonderful novel by McCarty of her Highland Guards series, much anticipated , but worth the wait. I enjoyed The Hunter so much, just like its predecessors. This is the story of "Hunter", a nom de guerre of Ewen Lamont who was one of the ten secret Highland Guards of Robert the Bruce of Scotland. Hunter was sent to find a nun by the name of "Sister Genna" who actually was Lady Janet of Mar, the missing twin sister of Mary of Mar (both were Bruce's sisters-by-marriage), secretly working as a spy and courier for Bruce under the disguise of a nun. Hunter was ordered by Bruce himself to find her, retrieve her and to bring her back to Scotland, with an additional order from Bruce to keep his hands off of Janet as well. According to Hunter, this is the mission that has "trouble" written all over it.Hunter and a few other of his Highland Guard brothers infiltrated into the English territory to find Sister Genna/Lady Janet, along the way, their journey was full of danger, perils, rough and rugged terrain, sensual attraction for each other and kisses that stirred their desire which both Ewen and Janet couldn't deny nor resist. Read more about this dark, brooding and handsome warrior in kilt and the Sister Genna who is anything but behaving like a nun; fiery and daring, courageous and brave, sharp tongue and witty, sensual and passionate with a kiss and a body that would tempt the saints.

This was a very good book. I have not read the other books in the series so I was a little behind on the knowledge. It was well written and the characters were well developed. It did start out a little slow but once it picked up I couldn't put it down. I will definitely be reading the other books in the series now.

Ewan is part of a group of highly trained Highlanders warriors, and his ability as tracker put him on a danger mission even more by having to protect the woman who now lives in his dreams.Janet was there for the cause. She did not imagine falling in love, but try to find her sister. But to be rescued and protected by that handsome and dangerous warrior, she left to fall for him and expect that their lives had the opportunity to live a great love ...This book is suitable for lovers of medieval historical novels, with several real historical passages.A new author to be discovered by me, from reading her other books. And for me, a highlander is always welcome.4.5 STARS

Very nice story, I really like this period of time and the way the author write it makes it very real. Very romantic story of a man who is considered a great tracker , and is sent to find a nun. Janet of mar is not really a nun, but a messenger who is on a mission. Two people who weren't supposed to find love but through lots of trials they eventually get to be together.

Well worth the wait between books - I had been dying to read Janet's story since finishing the last book and it was everything I could have hoped for. I love her stubborn, independent streak. Hunter was easy to fall for (All of McCarty's Hunks are easy to fall for) and I loved reading about his conflict as he thought she was a nun - it kept me laughing.5 Stars - and added to my Favs! Thanks Librarything for the review copy!

Received this from Early Reviewers. I haven't read the other books in this series, but will definitely go to read those. Love the writing as well as the characters. It took a bit to get into the book, the history, but was well worth it. Looking forward to learning about the other "Highland Guards".

loved this book for a while I did not think that Ewen Lamont and janet of mar where going to work things out cause they went though a lot together Ewen was always trying to do the right thing keeping her at arms link cause the king already chose someone for her to marry she did not know this but they thought it best that she did not know before she got back home. There were parts in the book that made me cry cause I was rooting for them to work things out but in the end they did and I was very happy. I was glad that Ewen let her keep doing what she was doing even after they gotten married. great book by Monica McCarty

My rating: 5 of 5 starsThe Hunter by Monica McCarty is a Ballantine/Random House publication set for a June 2013 release date. Wow! This was a really good Highlander Historical romance. Ewen Lamont is a proud, honorable member of the Highland Guard. Ewen is determined not to end up like his father, a man that had caused a scandal by marrying for love no matter what the cost. Ewen didn't really think a great deal about women. He was more concerned about preserving his clan and lands that he blamed his father for losing. He was loyal to Bruce and fought the English. But, when he encounters a nun in a dangerous situation, he is determined to see her to a safe place despite her protestations. Along the way he finds himself fighting an attraction to the nun. The two have a hot and cold relationship until they are finally separated. But, the two are destined to encounter each other time and again. Janet has been presumed dead for three years. She wears the disguise of a nun and works as a courier. She fully intends to eventually become a nun so she can continue her work, which she would have to give up if she ever married. To her, marriage was like a death penalty and she intended to avoid it at all cost. That is until she meets Ewen. While both are determined to do their jobs, they find themselves in dire danger from the enemy and from falling in love. Will history repeat itself for Ewen? This was an absorbing story with intrigue and danger either in the fore front or lurking in the background at all times. The back and forth between Ewen and Janet was sharp and funny and at times emotional. Two very determined adults have all they hold dear on the line as they fight for their leader and their personal values as well as for the love that is forbidden. I really, really liked this one. You will finish this book with a big smile on your face. I also enjoyed the author's notes at the end which detailed some of the history the story was built around. A+ all the way. Thanks to the publisher and Edelweiss for the ARC.
