About this audiobook

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this collection of personal essays, the beloved star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood reveals stories about life, love, and working as a woman in Hollywood-along with behind-the-scenes dispatches from the set of the new Gilmore Girls, where she plays the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore once again.

In Talking as Fast as I Can, Lauren Graham hits pause for a moment and looks back on her life, sharing laugh-out-loud stories about growing up, starting out as an actress, and, years later, sitting in her trailer on the Parenthood set and asking herself, "Did you, um, make it?" She opens up about the challenges of being single in Hollywood ("Strangers were worried about me; that's how long I was single!"), the time she was asked to audition her butt for a role, and her experience being a judge on Project Runway ("It's like I had a fashion-induced blackout").

In "What It Was Like, Part One," Graham sits down for an epic Gilmore Girls marathon and reflects on being cast as the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore. The essay "What It Was Like, Part Two" reveals how it felt to pick up the role again nine years later, and what doing so has meant to her.

Some more things you will learn about Lauren: She once tried to go vegan just to bond with Ellen DeGeneres, she's aware that meeting guys at awards shows has its pitfalls ("If you're meeting someone for the first time after three hours of hair, makeup, and styling, you've already set the bar too high"), and she's a card-carrying REI shopper ("My bungee cords now earn points!").

Including photos and excerpts from the diary Graham kept during the filming of the recent Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, this book is like a cozy night in, catching up with your best friend, laughing and swapping stories, and-of course-talking as fast as you can.

I never saw Gilmore Girls but I did watch Parenthood so I enjoyed listening to this. Lauren talks really fast but there are some added bonuses to the audio like phone conversations. A disadvantage is when she refers to a photo and you can't see it. I will have to go to a bookstore and look at the photos in a printed version. This was very enjoyable.

You can hear her speaking...I would love to hear her narrate this book! So much fun reading the back stories of her upbringing, rise to success (and her many blunders), and of course, Gilmore Girls. Read it in 3 hours!

If you're a fan of Gilmore Girls, I definitely recommend reading Lauren Graham's collection of essays. She is a talented writer and hearing stories from the set of the original filming and the reboot worked to create an interesting and easy read. If you aren't as familiar with her roles, you probably won't enjoy this nearly as much. I found this book to be a quick and easy read that was very entertaining thanks to Lauren's unique humor. She brings a lightheartedness and joy to her writing that is a pleasure to experience.

Disclaimer: I love, Love, LOVE Lauren Graham! I love her on Gilmore Girls and I love her on Parenthood and I’ve loved her little cameos on Newsradio, Seinfeld, Third Rock from the Sun, yada yada yada. So I started this book expecting to love it. Actually, I was waiting on pins and needles to get a chance to read it, because my library only got a digital copy and I was #9 on the holds list. Waiting for a book you’re dying to read is NOT easy! I was laughing out loud within the first few pages. It was a great book, and makes me want to be friends with Lauren Graham even more than I already did. Highly recommended if you like the actress, or memoirs, or laughing.

I really enjoyed this book, it was fun to hear things from her point of view, I can see why she did so well as Lorelai Gilmore, her sense of humor is very similar, and she seems to care deeply about her fellow actors. She found out fairly early on what her values are as an actress, and has stuck to them. I admire that.

Actress Lauren Graham describes her early life, her beginnings as an actress, and roles she had before Gilmore Girls. She rewatches some episodes of Gilmore Girls (which she says she has not done before) and talks about what the experience was like and how she felt at the time. She discusses a little bit of her time on the show Parenthood (but not very much), mostly focused on how the experience was different than that of Gilmore Girls. For example, she had a lot more free time since she was not the only lead of the show and that is how she got started writing. Then she transcribes sections of the diary that she kept while filming the Gilmore Girls revival in 2016. (This book came out in the same month as the Gilmore Girls revival.)Graham is, as to be expected, a funny writer and an excellent narrator. The memoir is chronological, but the writing is mostly a stream-of-consciousness style that is popular with celebrity (especially comedian) memoirs currently. Overall I did not like this memoir as much as I liked Graham’s novel. However, that’s mostly because 1) I am not a memoir person and 2) I probably waited too long to read this. It’s been almost two years since the Gilmore Girls revival came out, and most of the Gilmore Girls behind-the-scenes tidbits I already knew, because I was ravenously consuming everything Gilmore Girls-related at the time. All that being said, if you want to spend some time being inoffensively talked at by a soothing and familiar voice, you cannot go wrong with this audiobook.

As a Gilmore Girls fan, I almost choked when I saw this. I remember watching the show when it was in its final two or three seasons when I was a kid and then as a teen I went checked out the DVDs from the library and binge watched them all one summer I was taken aback with how different Lorelai was speaking in the first season. I became a fan of Lauren Graham and after reading how she’s totally fine being known as Lorelai, I feel no guilty conscience referring to her as Lorelai. Graham writes about her childhood experiences and what led her to choose acting as a career. She was that stereotypical theater kid and I loved reading about it. I really liked the behind the scenes stuff she shared about her shows. Maybe I’m biased but this was a really good story and I enjoyed learning more about someone who played such an iconic character for me.

I listened to the audio version of this book before receiving a physical copy from the publisher.  Even though having Lauren Graham narrates the book makes it 10 times better, I suggest readers don't be lazy like me and skip all the photos.  She does tell reader when to look at them.  P.s. she really does talk really fast.

I was hoping there is more about her and Alexis Bledel or Scott Patterson.  However, the person from Gilmore Girls she talks about the most is Amy Sherman-Palladino, the creator.  Since Amy is more like a backstage staff, so I do not feel as connected.  I have not had the chance to watch Parenthood yet, so nothing much to say about that section.  Still, it is nice to read about how actors think more their works. Also there is a lot of spoilers, so watch the shows before reading this book.

More like Reading As Fast As I Can, amirite?! Fresh off the emotional lows and highs of A Year in the Life, this book was the perfect capstone to a second immersion in Stars Hollow.

Lauren Graham is smart and funny and disarming, and the words on the page leapt into my ears as though being read aloud by Lorelai Gilmore. I tore through this book in what seemed like a matter of minutes, enjoying every bit of it.

I've seen this billed as "essays" but the firm didn't strike me as much different from a regular celebrity memoir: some stories about her childhood, her training, her early acting successes and failures, a few lessons learned along the way.

I could have done with a few fewer diet jokes; they seemed a little forced. But other than that, it felt like an authentic look at the memories and foibles of the woman who is the closest thing we'll ever have to a real-life Lorelai Gilmore, quirks and fast-talking dated pop-culture references and all.

Best for: Fans of Lauren Graham, fans of Gilmore Girls. If you’re just a fan of her work on Parenthood, there’s only one chapter in here for you.

In a nutshell: A loosely chronological collection of essays by Lauren Graham, discussing how she got into acting, her time on Gilmore Girls, and her time filming the recent series of films for Netflix.

Line that sticks with me: “What was it I’d encountered that day, and those other times? Why would anyone assume I’d need help with, or take credit for, something that wasn’t my work? Was it … sexism?”

Why I chose it: I really enjoy the characters of Lorelai Gilmore and Sarah Braverman, and I’m a sucker for a memoir written by a woman.

Review: I read this book in an afternoon plus one 30-minute session on the elliptical. It’s well-written, amusing, and offers some very sweet insight into Ms. Graham’s experiences as an actress. She even (for the first time) sits and watches all seasons of Gilmore Girls to give us readers her insights.

This book was fine. It’s definitely not bad, so I’m not sure why I’m leaning towards three stars instead of four. Maybe I was hoping for more? I’m not sure why – Ms. Graham seems extremely guarded (which is totally her right), and this book fits with that. I don’t think I learned anything surprising about her from her, although I made a few inferences of my own from what was included – or not.

The stories she tells are fun (thought rarely laugh-out-loud funny, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing) and kind and generous to her colleagues. I did thoroughly enjoy the Gilmore Girls-specific chapters, but did wish there was more about her time on Parenthood.

As an aside, there was one section, however, that might just change my life as far as my writing is concerned. In one chapter, she shares advice she received from a fellow writer, called “the kitchen timer.” It’s obvious as hell once one reads it, but I’m using it right now and honestly, it’s really helpful.

Graham delivers tidbits about her early career, landing the Gilmore gig and life in between the two lives of the show.Fun and fluffy, but I came away feeling that I didn't learn a ton about Graham or about Gilmore Girls behind the scenes. Still a good, quick listen, and of course Graham does a great job reading for the audio version.

Lauren Graham's first nonfiction work is a series of stories and essays covering her thoughts on her time on Gilmore Girls (both the old show and the new Netflix series), her childhood, breaking into acting, Parenthood, and more. It's told in Graham's unique, humorous voice, and it's just a fun, witty look at her life and what it was like to play Lorelai Gilmore (twice).

I've read a spate of celebrity memoirs over the years and always felt a tad let down. Of late, I've read Anna Kendrick's and Carrie Fisher's latest. I enjoyed them, but they just didn't completely fit the bill for me. (Is that the phrase? I don't know. This is why I'll never get my own memoir.) But Graham's book was really fun and a step above. I know it won't be that way for everyone. And I'm not just completely swayed by my absolute love for both Lauren and her characters (both Lorelai and Sarah Braverman), because I also love Anna Kendrick, Tina Fey, etc, and didn't adore their memoirs.

Graham's book is filled with fun observations about her work over the years, particularly on Gilmore Girls. I could have read about 100,000 more of her perceptions. Some of them are so unfathomable because they counteract the completely realistic portrayal of the characters on the show. But they are insightful and intriguing. Graham reminisces about her time on the actual show -- a lot of it reinforced by going back and watching the episodes (something she does reluctantly, as she hates watching herself on film). She admits that she doesn't remember a lot about that time without the help of watching the show. I've read a lot of reviews that her insights about that time on the show are slim, and it's true, but I still found them delightful and entertaining. Since she doesn't remember much otherwise, I'd rather have these tidbits than nothing. Plus, there's more to the book than just those memories. (Still, can we all just petition Lauren Graham to keep a diary for the rest of her life going forward?)

While reading the book, it's kind of crazy to realize how much can change in eight years -- between the end of Gilmore Girls and the start of the reunion show on Netflix. Graham points that out too, in the humorous way that only she can pull off. The layout of her book works, and I liked all the pictures she interspersed throughout. She's a strong writer, and the little life lessons at the end of each chapter do not seem too forced. We hear about her childhood, her relationship with Peter Krause, and Graham's aversion to technology. What I enjoyed is that Graham comes across as both believable and appreciative of her fame (unlike some memoirs I've read lately).

Finally, Graham kept a journal during her time on the Netflix revival of Gilmore Girls, so we get a little more insight into that show. My favorites were some of the guest characters, how she had no idea about the four words controversy all these years, and her actual thoughts on those infamous four words. Overall, sure, this book is a little light. But it still spans a lot of Graham's life and I felt like a learned a decent amount about her, considering she's such a private person (something she repeatedly mentions). She's a fun and humorous woman, and I gained some insights about all the various versions of Gilmore Girls I would have never had before. I read this book in basically one day and thoroughly loved it. This book may not have the same impact on someone who isn't a Graham/Gilmore Girls/Parenthood fan, but if you are, it's a fun, quick read.

I received a free copy of Lauren Graham's "Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls (and everything in between) through LT's Early Reviewers program.I LOVE Gilmore Girls (I'm one of those people who think the script was written about my mom and me) and I really enjoy Lauren Graham. So, I thought that I would really like this book. And, I did like the book but my feelings stopped there. While Graham's voice is clear, her stories fell a little short for me. Plenty of quirky and funny but nothing that rang truly personal. My favorite section is the diary about the making of the Gilmore Girls "A Year In Life" which filled in many of my questions about the hows and whats of the Netflix series. Sadly, there is no spolier about a second Netflix series though Graham writes several times, "It feels like a cliffhanger, right?"I think this book would make a great stocking stuffer for a Gilmore Girls fan. I found this to be a satisfying read on a plane. It might a great beach read. Just don't expect anything profound.

I received a free copy of Lauren Graham's "Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls (and everything in between) through LT's Early Reviewers program. It's a book that I probably wouldn't have picked up myself, but I was happy to read. It was was a fairly amusing and quick read. If you're looking for a gossipy-Hollywood tell-all, this book isn't it. Graham mostly gives an overview of her career and how the Gilmore Girls reunion came to be. She gives a mention to the co-stars and people she likes and mostly ignores the people she didn't seem to care for all that much. She is a good storyteller and many of her stories are amusing.Although I didn't find the book to be terribly insightful, I did like it. Graham seems like the kind of girl with whom it would be fun to hang around. This book did make me interested in reading her fiction -- she definitely has writing talent.

I really enjoyed reading about Lauren Grahams career! She writes as if she is talking to you, and it's really fun. She has a lot of interesting anecdotes about her childhood, the start of her acting career, to when she finally realized she "made it." Anyone who loves Gilmore Girls would enjoy this book. Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls (and Everything in Between) by Lauren Graham was a bit disappointing to me in that I felt so much of the writing was stilted. Lauren, your fans love you - you needn't try so hard to be funny and cute. When I pick up a memoir, I am looking for more substance and less fluff. The book did make for a light, quick read, however. I don't know that I'd have enjoyed it as much as I did had I not been a fan of Gilmore Girls. 3 stars

Lauren Graham is a down to earth person. She's very relatable and has a great sense of humor. Although I know of the actress but haven't actually seen any of her work including the show that made her career, Gilmore Girls, I still nonetheless enjoyed reading the book. It's a quick and light-hearted book. However, there's no depth to it. You just get a glimpse of the author's childhood, early career and big break. That is my main criticism and why I didn't give a higher rating. I received my copy of this book through the Early Reviewers program.

As a "Gilmore Girls" and "Parenthood" fan, I enjoyed peeking into Lauren Graham's background and antidotes of GG. The fast talking, subject hopping, and side comments that make Graham's Lorelei endearing, was the same Graham that takes the reader for 227 page spin. And as in binge watching the series, you become settled into the pace, likewise it takes a while to settle into her prose. Was I reading a book written by Lorelei or Lauren? Having watched the Netflix update of the "Girls," the book has made me want to revisit Stars Hollow for all the nuances that probably flew past me. Her references to the "last four words" of the Netflix update reinforce what many viewers are thinking... there has to be more installments of life in Stars Hollow to come. Cliffhanger indeed, and Graham as well as the viewers, need some resolution! Anyone who has spent hours in Stars Hollow will appreciate "Talking as Fast as I can" but for the uninitiated, you cannot fully appreciate this book without journeying with the Gilmores first. I received my copy of this book through the Early Reviewers program.

" Talking as Fast as I Can" is an autobiography and memoir by actress Lauren Graham, best known for her TV acting on the very popular shows "The Gilmore Girls" and "Parenthood". This book was a breezy, delightful read, and I finished it thinking Lauren Graham would be a wonderful woman to have as a friend. The overall tone of the book was lighthearted and funny, yet it dealt honestly with her early years before her huge success on TV. My impression of her is that she's adown to earth person with a good sense of humor. I've never seen "The Gilmore Girls", but after reading this, I think I have to get Netflix and check it out. Spoiler alert: the title comes from the statement by a critic that said the actors on the show spoke very fast !I recommend this book for all of Ms. Graham's fans, who will delight in the details.

I just love Lauren Graham. Her wit and point of view on things are fun to read. I really enjoyed this book for it's fun, honest, and carefree account of her career thus far. I found myself smiling, and even laughing, as I read her words. If you enjoy her in her acting roles then you will not be disappointed with this book.
