About this audiobook
You may not love your fat, but your body certainly does. In fact, your body is actually endowed with many self-defense measures to hold on to fat. For example, fat can use stem cells to regenerate; increase our appetite if it feels threatened; and use bacteria, genetics, and viruses to expand itself. The secret to losing twenty pounds? You have to work with your fat, not against it. Tara explains how your fat influences your appetite and willpower, how it defends itself when attacked, and why it grows back so quickly. The Secret Life of Fat brings cutting-edge research together with historical perspectives to reveal fat's true identity: an endocrine organ that, in the right amount, is critical to our health. Fat triggers puberty, enables our reproductive and immune systems, and even affects brain size.
Although we spend $60 billion annually fighting fat, our efforts are often misinformed and misdirected. Tara expertly illustrates the complex role that genetics, hormones, diet, exercise, and history play in our weight, and The Secret Life of Fat sets you on the path to beat the bulge once and for all.

Reviews for The Secret Life of Fat
28 ratings5 reviews
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very insightful, weight (Fat) reduction is now made into a dialogue everyone looking for it must have with themselves before jumping into a diet. Read/hear the book, understand which factors are key in your case and approach the situation accordingly.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very easily digestible, written in a way that everyone can understand, and it answered a lot of questions I had for a long time. It also explains how people can be overweight and metabolically healthy. (it pisses off my doctor who is itching to prescribe something and can't as the blood work is stellar). This book contains a lot of practical advice on what to do and how to not give up in your journey to a more manageable weight.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Detailed faceted based survey of the scientific lineage and current state of research on fat metabolism.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Thoughtful and thought provoking, a much needed book on the topic!
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5From 2016 and dated already, supports mistaken notion that healthy obesity exists. Debunked @ 2018.
