About this audiobook

FBI special agent Mercy Kilpatrick has been waiting her whole life for disaster to strike. A prepper since childhood, Mercy grew up living off the land—and off the grid—in rural Eagle’s Nest, Oregon. Until a shocking tragedy tore her family apart and forced her to leave home. Now a predator known as the cave man is targeting the survivalists in her hometown, murdering them in their homes, stealing huge numbers of weapons, and creating federal suspicion of a possible domestic terrorism event. But the crime scene details are eerily familiar to an unsolved mystery from Mercy’s past.

Sent by the FBI to assist local law enforcement, Mercy returns to Eagle’s Nest to face the family who shunned her while maintaining the facade of a law-abiding citizen. There, she meets police chief Truman Daly, whose uncle was the cave man’s latest victim. He sees the survivalist side of her that she desperately tries to hide, but if she lets him get close enough to learn her secret, she might not survive the fallout…

I quite enjoyed this one and will certainly be continuing the series. One thing I love to find in fiction is a strong sense of place and an introduction to a new culture. The preppers of Oregon are certainly a new culture for me!

Received an ARC for voluntary review for netgalley. Didn't hate it, but didn't love it like some of her other books. Mercy Kirkpatrick left at a young age after becoming estranged with her family. This family were preppers, and now the preppers are being killed and she returns as an FBI agent involved in case, and they are similar to cold cases. She has secrets, and a love interest Truman Daly, who is the police chief in charge and he would love to know these secrets. As always unexpected stuff comes out. Start to new series.

The first book in the Mercy Kilpatrick series – a strong female FBI agent sent to a small Oregon town to hunt down the ‘cave man’, a predator targeting survivalists. This book has all the elements of a gripping thriller / suspense: an eerie connection to an unsolved mystery, a killer on the loose, escalating tension and impending danger. Plus a very small side of romance to strike the perfect balance. A series I’m all in for and soon to be a TV series!

This is a new author for me, so I was glad to see it available as part of my Scribd subscription - a chance to try her out without buying the book in a bookstore. I now have a new author to add to my list of favourites. This was a well written story, with good character development, drama, suspense and just a touch of romance - just the way I like it. Looking forward to reading another of Kendra Elliot's work.

FBI Agent Mercy Kilpatrick returns to the small town where she grew up after a fifteen year absence when she is assigned to a case that may have a link with domestic terrorism. Someone is killing elderly preppers and stealing their gun collections. The new police chief, an import from San Jose who used to spend summers there, is the nephew of one of the victims. He definitely wants the cases solved and is happy that the FBI, with their vast resources, has come to assist. We gradually learn about Mercy's backstory as this story unfolds. She was raised to be a prepper -- someone who is stockpiling resources for the inevitable collapse of society. She left because of some unknown tragedy that led her parents to shun her. She has had no communication with her parents or her sisters or brothers since. In fact, when she stopped in to get some coffee at a new coffee shop she was surprised to see her that her brother and her niece owned it. Neither acknowledged each other during the awkward encounter. We also learn about small town politics as we see the rivalry between Mercy's father and an influential local rancher who wants Mercy's family as a part of his community. After still another elderly prepper is murdered, Mercy notices a frightening connection to a couple of murders that happened shortly before she first left town. Every mirror in the victims' houses has been shattered. This brings up a connection to earlier crimes that comes very close to exposing the secret the led to her getting out of town. She and Truman Daly, the police chief, get close as they investigate the new and old crimes. He first admires her intelligence and focus but that just leads him to want to know more about her. He is the first to consider a relationship with her. Between her investigation, her guilt over past events, and her current relationship, or lack of one, with her family, it takes Mercy much longer to appreciate Truman. This was an excellent mystery. I really liked both Mercy and Truman. Since this story introduces new characters, I hope more adventures are planned for Mercy and Truman.

Reading a book from KU is always a risk. I've found some gems like Stillhouse Lake series by Rachel Caine and the Sydney Rose Parnell series by Barbara Nickless but not too often. This one wasn't technically bad but just really boring. I wasn't interested in any of the characters or the mystery. I think I kept reading to see if it gets better since I am always on the lookout for a good series. But it didn't. I skimmed through the last third to just finish it. The problem could have been that I've had a good reading streak lately and this book fell far short of anything I've read in the last month. So this author isn't for me.

This is the first in a new series by Kendra Elliot and it has me hooked. Mercy Kilpatrick is a woman with many secrets. That is hard for someone who is also an FBI agent. When her most recent case sends her back to her hometown of Eagle's Nest, Oregon, some of her secrets come out. Fifteen years earlier she left home and was shunned by her family, she has not spoken to any of them since. This town has more than its share of "preppers". There are two main groups one headed up by Mercy's father and the second by her father's enemy. When several older preppers are killed and their weapons stolen, the FBI is worried about Domestic Terrorism. With the help of police chief, Truman Daley, Mercy and her partner begin the investigation. When things remind Mercy of earlier murders (15 years ago) she reopens the investigation in those cases. What is Mercy's secret? How will all this affect her job with the FBI and her family relationships?" I could not put this book down. I read long into the night to find out what was going to happen. The plot pulled me along quite quickly. I liked learning more about Preppers. I always thought they were a bunch of crazy, hermit types but these characters were not. I was not sure about the character of Mercy at the beginning of the book, but really liked her by the end. Finding out about her past slowly as the book unfolds makes her very real to the reader. The secondary characters (her family, her partner) are all very likable (except her father) and I hope to see more of them in other books in this series. I will say that I had figured out who the murderer was much earlier than the book revealed it, but it did not diminish my enjoyment of the story at all. A great read for lovers of suspense, mysteries and FBI type stories. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.

Mercy Kilpatrick returns home after fifteen years, not to reconnect with her family but as an FBI agent investigating several murders of men who had loads of guns stolen. Also worth mentioning, these men where preppers. I can't imagine prepping for the end of the world. Mercy was not a stranger to this way of thinking, she grew up in a family where it was a way of life. Mercy was also keeping a secret and it was part of the reason why she left her family and never returned. Mercy believes the recent murders are related to ones that occurred before she left home. The book definitely moves fast once one of Mercy's family member goes missing. I had some suspicions on who was behind everything, it wasn't too hard to figure out. The book was still an awesome read. The book is more mystery than romance. There's just a touch of romance brewing between Mercy and local police chief Truman Daly. I definitely recommend this book and can't wait to read the next Mercy Kilpatrick book!!Thanks to NetGalley, Montlake Romance and the author, Kendra Ell, for a free electronic ARC of this novel.

I've read all of Kendra Elliot's books and was super excited to start her latest series. Once again, she didn't disappoint.Mercy Kilpatrick, the protagonist, first appeared in Targeted, the fourth book in the Callahan & McLane series.Mercy left her hometown 15 years ago and hasn't spoken to her family since. But now she is sent by the FBI to help the local police with their investigation into the murder of survivalists in the isolated community of Eagle's Nest, Oregon. Local police chief Truman Daly has a keen personal interest in the case, as one of the murdered men was his uncle. When Mercy finds some similarities to events that happened 15 years ago, she is forced to reconnect with members of her family and has to trust Truman with details of her life that she has kept hidden.I enjoyed the unique storyline about preppers, their mindset and way of life. The emphasis was on suspense, the romance light and believable because it unfolded gradually. Some unexpected twists. Overall, a great start to a promising new series.
