- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The theme of this book is you'll never know until you try. There are loads of examples of everyday people in everyday situations, and some famous folks with real life anxieties to use as examples. If you know someone contemplating a leap in their life, give them a copy.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Molinsky impresses me with this book. It’s of the self-help variety, but the situations are relatable and the solutions are practical. He covers avoidance issues of which we can all relate on some level, and he provides approaches and solutions that are doable and customizable. I gained the most from the topics on conviction, particularly with fundraising. We tend to think that fundraising comes naturally to charming people, but with true conviction, any one of us can tell a story with potential to move others to action. This book is important because it helps the reader find confidence that should have already been there. It’s less about acting and more about self-appreciation and -acknowledgement. Molinsky helps us find our conviction and put it to good use.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5_Reach_, I cannot imagine a more perfect title for this book._Break Out_ would have perhaps been more snazzy. _Face Your Fears_, to the point with a no nonsense edge. _Quit Being a Baby_....well, you get my point. But _Reach_ - whether for the stars or just beyond yourself: going from the comfort zone to the magic zone. Beautiful. Happily, the title does the book justice. To begin, author Andy Moolinsky lays out what to expect from this book using his own experiences as an example. He then issues several challenges; to you rauthenticity, your likeabilty, your competence, your morality and yes, even your resentment. Areas in which we are most likely to talk ourselves out of something in order to apease some belief or fear that may or may not be true. He then gets down and dirty with the avoidance tactics we use to hide from these beliefs and fears. Generally, we spend more time avoiding a problem (and setting ourselves up for a negative feedback loop) then it would take to just fix it and move on (cliche alert - whatever we resist, persists). After (gently) shaming us for our wimpy ways, Molinsky gives us the tools to overcome whatever is holding us back. And here is the true gem of the book, we are then guided to making this behavior a positive feedback loop - making it a part of ourselves instead of merely an exercise Perfect.I'll be honest, I consider myself a competent person in most areas of my life but there are a couple of things that bring out my inner doormat with a vengence. This book has helped me tremendously with fixing those areas and, while a long way from perfect, I am making progress. Molinsky was inspiring; not only in being an innovative researcher in this area but also as someone who has struggled with and overcome these same issues. I found the assessment tool in the last section of the book to be particularly valuable to as it pulls the entire book into one package (as opposed to a scattershot series of exercises) and has you apply what you have learned. Brilliant. If you, like me, have struggled with your inner wimp, I cannot recommend this book highly enough
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A mostly unremarkable strategy book aimed at solving a problem many won't see a need to solve. While it was easy to read and easy to understand the execution won't be so easy and might not be necessary.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Not quite as loaded with specific exercises and strategies as I would have liked (though there are some,) but still a great pep talk. The use of several examples being carried throughout the book was a very useful touch. Somewhat slanted for those in a business environment, but not so much that it isn't useful to everyone.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I'm neither a fan of business books nor self-help books, but as an introvert in a new job where I have to step out of my comfort zone, I thought I'd give Reach a try. Refreshingly, the book is well thought out, backed with research, and (mostly) free of bromides. It clearly breaks down the types of inner obstacles we feel when we have to do something we're not comfortable with and provides clear strategies for confronting them. And thankfully, it doesn't sugarcoat the difficulties this will entail. Best of all, it provides a workbook of sorts at the end to help you create your own plan of action. I'm looking forward to trying it IRL soon.

Molinsky uses three C's-- clarity, conviction and customization--- and each one is easily explained. He also offers a workbook at the end, so readers can practice his ideas in their own lives.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I'm having mixed feelings about this book. First the positives. Easy-read, small book with simple language definitely aid in finishing this book soon. The reasons why people don't step out of their comfort zones were definitely engaging. Conviction and Clarity were thoroughly authentic and I could relate to them intimately. Although you can use the 3-C's mentioned in the book in any walk of your life, many of the examples given were 'work-related', narrowing the scope of the book. I've read a couple other books related to this topic and I did not find many "Eureka!!" moments in the book. For example, Switch by Chip and Dan Heath gives some excellent pointers on how to welcome/put forth change and follow it through.

Author Andy Molinsky offers up clear, practical solutions for systematically stepping outside of your comfort zone and taking risks. In addition to laying the groundwork for these new habits, the author also rightfully makes the case that one size will certainly not fit all. Each person is expected to find their optimal path to achieve true reach. From my own experience, I would add that repeatedly stepping outside your comfort zone, especially if the task is routine, will over time cause it to feel completely normal. A kind of desensitization through exposure. My favorite example is making cold calls—do it enough and the extraordinary-ness of it will wear off.

He explains why going beyond what is comfortable is so difficult and the excuses we use to remain within the sphere of our current knowledge and competencies. He then explains in detail the strategies to apply that facilitate our ability to grow beyond what we currently know. Molinsky is sympathetic to the challenges inherent in entering into new situations and undertaking unfamiliar actions. He outlines practical steps to making the leap to new behaviors. The book is written for a popular audience. There are many real-life examples of people overcoming their anxieties. References to research are minimal, which may disappoint more academic-minded readers. Enormously useful is the workbook section at the end that leads the reader through the processes described in the book. Molinsky’s book provides the reader with a valuable tool for achieving personal growth and success.
