About this audiobook
Scandalously frank, wittily erudite, mercurially eloquent, resourcefully comic and generously humane, Ulysses offers the reader a life-changing experience.
James Joyce
James Joyce was born in Dublin in 1882. He came from a reasonably wealthy family which, predominantly because of the recklessness of Joyce's father John, was soon plunged into financial hardship. The young Joyce attended Clongowes College, Belvedere College and, eventually, University College, Dublin. In 1904 he met Nora Barnacle, and eloped with her to Croatia. From this point until the end of his life, Joyce lived as an exile, moving from Trieste to Rome, and then to Zurich and Paris. His major works are Dubliners (1914), A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916), Ulysses (1922) and Finnegan's Wake (1939). He died in 1941, by which time he had come to be regarded as one of the greatest novelists the world ever produced.

The excitement radiates off every page. Here is a wondrous artwork's first outing, skillfully returned to the world." -Enda Duffy, University of California Santa Barbara -- Enda Duffy "More than the shock of recognition, there is a jolt of pleasure, indistinguishable from wonder, in encountering Ulysses as its first intrigued readers would have in the proudly modern pages of The Little Review."-Maria DiBattista, Princeton University -- Maria DiBattista "This canny edition of Ulysses episodes from The Little Review throws revealing light on transatlantic modernism by tracing the intertwined histories of a seminal journal and Joyce's masterpiece. It reconstructs serial reading by embedding the early versions in their periodical and period contexts while sending us to the 1922 Ulysses with refreshed vision for those who already know it or with sharpened vision for first-time readers."-John Paul Riquelme, Boston University -- John Paul Riquelme "The Little Review "Ulysses" recreates the astonishing experience of reading the Ulysses installments before U.S. censors shut them down. Gaipa, Latham and Scholes are deft guides to a masterpiece in the making. It's indispensable reading for any serious Joycean.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I have read Ulysses at least three or four times (and once with Gilbert Stuart's authorised translation) and always found unsounded depths that I had not suspected. Every chapter introduces new narrative techniques, new perspectives and characters, and new voices. This is a book that definitely requires some homework to fully appreciate. I would recommend the aforementioned Gilbert Stuart commentary and biography, the Frank Budgen criticism, and especially the classic Richard Ellman biography. There is precious little here not to love regardless of your literary tastes, but like most good things, this book asks you to work for it. As Leopold Bloom goes through this day in Dublin, all kinds of things are happening all around him and it is a virtual reality experience in four dimensions - ending with for me one of the most beautiful chapters ever written, the stream
of conscious dialog of Bloom's wife posing as Ulysses' Penelope. It is of such texture and voluptuousness that it is impossible to capture without first hand experience of having read it. If you put forward one personal challenge for a great summer read, make it Ulysses! - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The one of the best and Aweome book which i found. i found it so informative and so learnful.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Ulyses by James Joyse is a book defined as a work of art for its hallucinatory, general brilliance and beauty of the language and this can be seen in each of its chapters where they present new narrative techniques, new perspectives and characters, and new voices. This is a book that definitely requires some homework to fully appreciate.
As it is a complex book with innumerable references to Greek mythology, each chapter must be appreciated to understand each one of them and achieve a well-finished study of the plot and events presented in the book.1 person found this helpful
