About this audiobook

“Like Outlander with an Italian accent.” —Real Simple

“A detailed historical novel, a multifaceted mystery, and a moving tale of improbable love.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review

A NEW YORK POST MUST-READ BOOK

Readers of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander and Tracy Chevalier’s Girl with a Pearl Earring…will be swept away by the spell of medieval Siena” (Library Journal, starred review) in this transporting love story and gripping historical mystery.

Accomplished neurosurgeon Beatrice Trovato knows that her deep empathy for her patients is starting to impede her work. So when her beloved brother passes away, she welcomes the unexpected trip to the Tuscan city of Siena to resolve his estate, even as she wrestles with grief. But as she delves deeper into her brother’s affairs, she discovers intrigue she never imagined—a 700-year-old conspiracy to decimate the city.

As Beatrice explores the evidence further, she uncovers the journal and paintings of the fourteenth-century artist Gabriele Accorsi. But when she finds a startling image of her own face, she is suddenly transported to the year 1347. She awakens in a Siena unfamiliar to her, one that will soon be hit by the Plague.

Yet when Beatrice meets Accorsi, something unexpected happens: she falls in love—not only with Gabriele, but also with the beauty and cadence of medieval life. As the Plague and the ruthless hands behind its trajectory threaten not only her survival but also Siena’s very existence, Beatrice must decide in which century she belongs.

The Scribe of Siena is the captivating story of a brilliant woman’s passionate affair with a time and a place that captures her in an impossibly romantic and dangerous trap—testing the strength of fate and the bonds of love.

Brought to a believable 1300s Sienna. An enjoyable story of medieval Italy conspiracy.
Whispers of Outlander - like time travel.

This is the best book I have ever read! In fact, I listened to the audio version, and this made it even better. It’s beautifully narrated and the narration adds to the beauty. I felt as though I was living in 14C Siena and thought about the history, the events of the time, the art, the buildings even whilst going about my day to day. It felt particularly pertinent that it was during the Black Death, which of course threw reflections on our current COVID-19 experience.
The balance between historical fact and fiction is enough to enable suspension of disbelief and inspire fascination, both with the time slip story but also with reality. What was mediaeval life really like? What’s it like to be a neuro surgeon?
I struggle to find any criticism but if there is any, perhaps the very early chapters could be tightened up a little - I found myself getting a bit lost and having to re-listen in a few places., and it seemed to be slower than the rest of the book. But this in no way detracted from the novel.
Please write another one and use the same narrator!

I really enjoyed this book. I have travelled to Sienna and Florence so the story brought me back there. I also really liked the reader of the book speaking so beautifully in Italian as these words and phrases were sprinkled throughout the chapters. There was intrigue and fantasy wrapped into historical fiction! Lovely!! I highly recommend.

I loved the story! Yes, time travel is fantastical, but I allowed myself to be caught up in the beautiful love story set in medieval times against the background of the plague and antagonism between Florence and Sienna. Pertinent to all now with the world in panic and fear of the Covid19 Pandemic. The writing felt visceral, I could smell the woolen clothing, the wax burning, the hustle and bustle of the markets. Audiobook was well read and characters totally believable. Highly recommended

WOW- This novel and her reader are so well matched it is uncanny. A brilliant mystery, beautifully balanced with historical descriptive, and interesting, credible characters. I wanted this to go on and on. Thank you for giving us this creation.

Great historical fiction that I’m sure required a large amount of research. Loved the romance. It did remind me a little of Outlander but enough of a difference that I didn’t get bored. The narrator was also very good!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this historical fiction, although it more than just reminded me of 'Outlander'. The entire storyline and characters must surely have been taken from 'Outlander' and re-written in medieval Sienna. Never-the-less it is well written, clearly well researched and enjoyable, though the love story didn't quite convince me.

Lush, stunning, atmospheric and full of five-sensory immersion... there’s not enough wonderful words to describe how much I love this book. Time travel and historical fiction are both hard to do well, and Melodie Winawer has managed the feat of excelling at both. I admit, I have been to Siena and adore the city ~ so this book evoked a lot of wonderful memories for me. But more than that, I felt transported. And in many ways of envious of Beatrice, the heroine, for getting to experience this incredible era of history. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Interesting storyline but not one I found captivating. At times it felt rambling and repetitive, and at other times too unreal to maintain itself as historical fiction.

Reader was ok, but the story was very slow moving in the beginning and kind of ring throughout. I might have enjoyed it more if it was half as long.

An interesting story, some history, life in 1300 Siena, and a reader who can actually pronounce Italian correctly (there is a lot of Italian in the book)!
